We devised an in vivo biological assay for ovarian growth inhibiting activity to examine extracts of human pregnancy urine for the presence of ovarian growth inhibiting factor. Diethylstilbestrol (DES) capsules were implanted sc in immature hypophysectomized female rats; FSH was injected sc with or without test substance for 5 days. We investigated synthesis of plasminogen by the isolated rat liver perfused in vitro for 10 hours. Studies were performed under basal conditions as well as under conditions of hormone stimulation known to augment synthesis of acute-phase reactant proteins by the isolated perfused rat liver. A structural glycoprotein of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus was obtained in pure form by immunoaffinity chromatography using a monoclonal antibody with high neutralizing activity. It blocked neutralization of viral infectivity by antibody and in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis it migrated with an apparent molecular weight of 44 X 10(3).
