[Ophthalmologic manifestations of Waardenburg syndrome].

The Waardenburg syndrome is a group of rare genetic diseases, which clinical manifestations include neurosensory hearing loss, diminished pigmentation of forelock in the frontal region, iris heterochromia, medial canthus dystopia, and the presence of such changes in first-line relatives. The article presents a clinical case of type I Waardenburg syndrome, which developed de novo in a family. This case is unique in its combination of complete bilateral iris heterochromia and impaired choroidal pigmentation. The choroid did not only have hypopigmentation zones, but also large areas of hyper- and

The HAM10000 dataset, a large collection of multi-source dermatoscopic images of common pigmented skin lesions.

Training of neural networks for automated diagnosis of pigmented skin lesions is hampered by the small size and lack of diversity of available datasets of dermatoscopic images. We tackle this problem by releasing the HAM10000 ("Human Against Machine with 10000 training images") dataset. We collected dermatoscopic images from different populations acquired and stored by different modalities. Given this diversity we had to apply different acquisition and cleaning methods and developed semi-automatic workflows utilizing specifically trained neural networks. The final dataset consists of 10015 der

Palmoplantar exfoliation due to chloroquine.

Chloroquine is the drug very frequently used for the treatment of malaria. It is also used in amebiasis, rheumatoid arthritis, and various dermatological conditions. Chloroquine can cause muscle problems, loss of appetite, and diarrhea as a side effect. Cutaneous toxicity includes pruritus, hair loss, photosensitivity, and color changes. Exfoliation of skin over palms and soles is caused by chemotherapeutic drugs such as axitinib, fluorouracil, idarubicin, doxorubicin, sunitinib, sorafenib, and paclitaxel. Here, a case of a 40-year-old female is presented who developed palmoplantar exfoliation

Unusual Case of Graphite Tattoo in a Pediatric Patient: Clinical Presentation and Differential Diagnosis.

Graphite tattoo, a rare finding in children, is characterized by a localized blue-grey macule of variable sizes and shapes. Intraoral graphite implantation may cause this pigmentation through accidental injury with a graphite pencil. The purpose of this paper is to report an unusual case of graphite tattoo involving the anterior palate region in a seven-year-old girl. A diagnosis was made based on clinical and radiographic examinations and histopathology features. This report also highlights the importance of differential diagnosis and management of oral benign and malignant pigmented lesions

[Ethnic nail pigmentations and differential diagnoses].

Pigmentary nail changes may have a variety of causes, e. g., chronic inflammation, and occur more often in patients of African descent compared to Caucasians. Subungual malignant melanoma is the most important differential diagnosis and must be ruled out in any case. Dermatoscopy might be helpful. If no biopsy is taken, clinical follow-ups are necessary at short intervals. In case of chronic paronychia, optimization of occupational skin protection measures may contribute to the healing process.

Heterochromia of the Hair and Eyelashes with Blaschkoid Dyspigmentation.

Heterochromia of the hair involves the presence of two distinctive colors of scalp hair in one individual. We report the case of a 4-year-old girl with reddish streaks of scalp hair, heterochromia of the eyelashes, and cutaneous hypopigmentation following the lines of Blaschko.

Pigmented lesions of the nail bed - Clinical assessment and biopsy.

BACKGROUND: Subungual melanoma is an uncommon type of melanoma that can be difficult to diagnose. Patients often present with advanced primary lesions and have an associated increased risk of nodal disease. Delays in diagnosis are believed to contribute to poor patient outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this article is to offer an approach to assessing and managing patients who present with subungual pigmented lesions. We describe the anatomy of the nail bed to offer a rationale for our technique of nail bed biopsy, and warn of the potential to cause permanent nail dystrophy through other

Pigmentary disorders of the eyes and skin.

Oculocutaneous albinism, Menkes syndrome, tuberous sclerosis, neurofibromatosis type 1, dyskeratosis congenita, lentiginosis profusa syndrome, incontinentia pigmenti, and Waardenburg syndrome all are genodermatoses that have well established gene mutations affecting multiple biological pathways, including melanin synthesis, copper transport, cellular proliferation, telomerase function, apoptosis, and melanocyte biology. Onchocerciasis results from a systemic inflammatory response to a nematode infection. Hypomelanosis of Ito is caused by chromosomal mosaicism, which underlies its phenotypic he

Dyschromatosis universalis hereditaria: a rare entity.

Dyschromatosis universalis hereditaria is an infrequently occurring genodermatosis with peculiar pigmentary changes, consisting of varying sized, intermingled hyperpigmented and hypopigmented macules that give an overall impression of mottling. We hereby report a case of dyschromatosis universalis hereditaria in a young female with a family history of the disorder.

Atypical variant of galli-galli disease (grover-like eruption with lentiginous freckling) in a liver transplant patient.

Galli-Galli disease is considered as a rare variant of Dowling-Degos disease, sharing the same clinical features of reticulate hyperpigmentation of the flexures. Histopathologically, there is acantholysis and suparabasal lacunae. Grover disease (transient acantholytic dermatosis) is a transient dermatosis which clinically presents as an eruption of erythematous excoriated papules located on the trunk and histologically with dyskeratosis and acantholysis. Grover disease has occasionally been reported in patients with chronic renal failure, human immunodeficiency virus infection, hematological m

[Yellow nail syndrome].

The yellow nail syndrome is a rare disease. The diagnosis is clinically based on three features: yellow discolouration on the nails, chronic lymphedema, and pleural effusions. The treatment of the yellow nails is controversial. Spontaneous healing is reported in 30% of the cases. Vitamin E can otherwise be tried. The syndrome is a benign disease but the literature describes an association to malign and autoimmune diseases. It is therefore important to investigate the patients with this syndrome. The present case story shows the development of yellow nail syndrome in a 73 year-old man.

Vitiligo: a sign of systemic disease.

Vitiligo reflects a systemic process that has important implications beyond the skin. These include other autoimmune diseases and ocular and neurological abnormalities. Alezzandrini syndrome and Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome particularly exemplify this relationship. In addition, vitiligo may be confused with other systemic disorders, including tuberous sclerosis, progressive systemic sclerosis (scleroderma), melanoma, and, in endemic regions, leprosy. We describe these associations and emphasize the importance of depigmenting disorders.

Corrective cosmetics are effective for women with facial pigmentary disorders.

Visible facial lesions are a common and burdensome skin problem. This study examines the impact of corrective cosmetics in women with severe facial pigmentary disorders. Enrollment consisted of 73 women with one or more of the following conditions: acne, dermatosis papulosis, hypopigmentation, lentigines, melasma, rosacea, vascular proliferations, or other facial scars. The corrective cosmetic (Dermablend) was applied at the initial visit, at which time instructions and a supply of product were provided. Assessments were conducted at baseline, 2-week, 4-week, and 3-month follow-up visits on 63
