AIM: To find the aetiological spectrum, clinical features to differentiate organic from functional constipation (FC) and the efficacy of polyethylene glycol (PEG) over lactulose in the treatment of childhood constipation.

The type of tissue response to implant by-products can be determined by examination of periprosthetic tissues. However, little is known about the most suitable location for tissue sampling. The main goal of this study was to evaluate the extent of variability in tissue response in relation to location of tissue sampling, implant fixation, age and sex in total joint arthroplasties with metal-on-polyethylene or ceramic-on-polyethylene bearing pairs. We processed 236 histology slides from 21 patients and focused on the association between the location of tissue samples and histological features.

This study compared the damage scores and damage patterns in 19 tibial inserts from rotating hinge (RH) implants with 19 inserts from highly constrained (HC) implants. Each insert was divided into 16 damage zones and each zone was subjectively graded from a scale of 0-3 for seven different damage modes. We evaluated the mid-term performance of a moderately cross-linked polyethylene THA bearing in younger patients. One hundred consecutive THAs performed in patients 50 years of age and under using the same cementless acetabular component and moderately cross-linked polyethylene were evaluated at minimum 10 year follow-up. BACKGROUND: Charnley low-friction torque total hip arthroplasty (THA) remains the gold standard in THA. The main cause for failure is wear of the socket. Highly crosslinked polyethylene (HXLPE) has been associated with reduced wear rates. Also, oxidized zirconium has shown in vitro reduced wear rates. However, to our knowledge, there are no data comparing oxidized zirconium femoral heads with metal heads against HXLPE or ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) when 22.25-mm bearings were used, which was the same size that performed so well in Charnley-type THAs.
