Effects of Anger Rumination on Different Scenarios of Anger: An Experimental Investigation.

Anger rumination has been defined as a repetitive thinking style focused on causes and consequences of anger. Different studies have shown the role of anger rumination as a maintaining factor for emotional arousal and stress that can lead to behavioral dysregulation. The present study aims at investigating whether the role of anger rumination in increasing anger is different with respect to different anger scenarios. Moreover, effects of anger rumination on anger will be compared with the effects of 2 different thinking styles (cognitive reappraisal and distraction). Participants were asked to

Rumination and Rebound from Failure as a Function of Gender and Time on Task.

Rumination is a trait response to blocked goals that can have positive or negative outcomes for goal resolution depending on where attention is focused. Whereas "moody brooding" on affective states may be maladaptive, especially for females, "reflective pondering" on concrete strategies for problem solving may be more adaptive. In the context of a challenging general knowledge test, we examined how Brooding and Reflection rumination styles predicted students' subjective and event-related responses (ERPs) to negative feedback, as well as use of this feedback to rebound from failure on a later s

[The role of intrusive and deliberate ruminations for meaning making in stressful events].

This study examined the relationship between meaning making and rumination regarding stressful events. We focused on two facets of rumination: intrusive and deliberate. Participants (N = 121) completed a questionnaire about a stressful event in their life that assessed the possibility of preventing the event, probability of the event occurring, perceived threat of the event, and meaning making. They also completed scales that assessed intrusive and deliberate ruminations about the event, posttraumatic growth after the event, as well as dispositions of self-rumination and self-reflection, and e

Partial replication of two rumination-related candidate gene studies.

Two recent papers associated candidate genes with brooding rumination, a possible cognitive endophenotype for depression, in children ages 8-14 years. Stone et al. reported that BDNF val66met polymorphism predicted brooding in adolescence. Woody et al. reported that children carrying at least one copy of a CRHR1 TAT haplotype reported less brooding than their peers in the presence of maternal depression. We attempted to replicate and extend these findings in a sample of twins aged 12-16 years. We analyzed the BDNF val66met (rs6265) polymorphism and two (rs242924 and rs7209436) out of three sin

Automated detection and characterisation of rumination in sheep using in vivo electrophysiology.

Rumination is a precisely timed process that occupies a large part of a sheep's day. The complex motor coordination required to chew and swallow means that quantification of rumination may provide a surrogate marker for effective motor function. Here, data from 24h in vivo electrophysiological recordings, collected as part of an earlier study, were reanalysed for chewing- and swallowing-related activity. The electroencephalographic (EEG) and electromyographic (EMG) data were collected from sheep with surgically-implanted electrodes. An algorithm was designed to detect coordinated, rhythmic mus

Rumination in dysphoric mothers negatively affects mother-infant interactions.

BACKGROUND: Postnatal maternal depressive symptoms are consistently associated with reduced quality of mother-infant interaction. However, there is little research examining the role of maternal cognitive factors (e.g. rumination) in the relationship between depressive symptoms and mother-infant interaction quality. This study investigated the hypotheses that: dysphoric mothers would demonstrate less sensitive behaviour towards their infants compared with nondysphoric mothers; mothers induced to ruminate would be less sensitive towards infants; rumination would moderate the relationship betwee

Depressive Rumination and Social Problem Solving in Japanese University Students.

The relationship between depressive rumination and dimensions of social problem solving were investigated in a Japanese, nonclinical population. University students (N = 227) completed the Beck Depression Inventory-Second Edition, Ruminative Responses Scale, Means-Ends Problem-Solving (MEPS) test, and Social Problem-Solving Inventory-Revised Short Version (SPSI-R:S). Results indicated that after controlling for depression, trait rumination, especially its brooding subcomponent, was positively correlated with negative problem orientation and avoidance style. Unexpectedly, trait rumination was w

Eating and rumination activity in 10 cows over 10 days.

Eating and rumination activities were evaluated in 10 Brown Swiss cows over 10 days, and the coefficients of variation (CV) were calculated for the investigated variables. A pressure sensor integrated into the noseband of a halter recorded jaw movements during chewing, which allowed the recording of eating and rumination times and the number of regurgitated boluses. The mean CVs ranged from 5.9 to 12.7% and were smaller for rumination (chewing cycles per bolus, 5.9%; daily number of cuds, 8.4%; rumination time, 9.1%) than for eating (eating time, 12.0%; chewing cycles related to eating, 12.7%)

Transdiagnostic mechanisms in depression and anxiety: The role of rumination and attentional control.

BACKGROUND: Deficits in attentional control have been hypothesized to cause rumination, suggesting that the relationships between attentional control and clinical symptoms may be mediated in part by rumination. However, to date, no clinical study has examined these constructs transdiagnostically in a path analysis model. METHODS: Fifty-one adults presenting for treatment completed measures of self-reported attentional control, rumination, and depression and anxiety symptoms. A bias-corrected path analysis-based approach was employed to test whether indirect (i.e., mediating) effects of rumina

A Validation Study of the Korean-Ruminative Response Scale in Korean Adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of Korean version of Ruminative Response Scale (K-RRS) for Korean adolescents. METHODS: A community sample of 1220 adolescents was recruited from middle schools and high schools. Exploratory factor analyses and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted, and additional analyses were performed to assess the reliability and validity of the K-RRS. RESULTS: An exploratory factor analysis of a sample of adolescents (n=550) yielded a three factor structure: 'depressive rumination', 'reflective pondering', and 'brooding'. Confirmatory fac

Rumination and self-reflection in stress narratives and relations to psychological functioning.

The longitudinal study aims to expand what is known about the costs and benefits of narrating stressful experiences by exploring changes in rumination within the narrative process and comparing it to changes in self-reflection. Rumination (e.g., brooding, self-criticism, and negative emotions) and self-reflection were measured in stress narratives of 56 college students. There were several goals: (1) examine changes in narrative rumination and narrative self-reflection over 3 days of writing, (2) examine the relations among the changes in narrative rumination variables and narrative self-refle

Short communication: Decrease in rumination time as an indicator of the onset of calving.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether rumination time (RT) is affected by the onset of calving. The relationship between both feeding time and dry matter intake (DMI) to the onset of calving was also examined. In addition, the correlation between feeding behavior characteristics, described here as RT, feeding time, and DMI, was evaluated. Under test conditions, the feeding behavior of pregnant Holstein cows was recorded from the time when they were moved into calving pens (usually 7 to 5d prepartum) until the onset of calving. Feeding time and DMI were recorded by automatic feed bin

Shame, rumination, and self-compassion in men assessed for hypersexual disorder.

A number of studies have linked maladaptive shame to higher levels of hypersexual behavior and tendencies to ruminate. However, little research has examined factors that may attenuate the negative impact that shame and rumination may have on hypersexuality. Drawing on data collected from male patients (N=172) assessed for hypersexual disorder in a DSM-5 field trial, path analysis was used to explore relationships among shame, rumination, self-compassion, and hypersexual behavior. The findings from this study showed that self-compassion partially mediated the relationship between shame and rumi

Effects of rumination and acceptance on body dissatisfaction in binge eating disorder.

Overvaluation of shape and weight and the corresponding body dissatisfaction are a maintenance factor for the psychopathology of binge eating disorder (BED). Evidence suggests potential benefits of various emotion regulation (ER) strategies in the modification of body dissatisfaction. Therefore, in the present study body dissatisfaction was experimentally induced in women with BED (n=30) using model pictures. Then, participants were instructed to either ruminate on present emotions and thoughts or accept whatever thoughts and feelings come up. Body dissatisfaction and mood were assessed prior

The relationship between perfectionism and rumination in post traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: To date no research has investigated the link between Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and perfectionism in a clinical sample. AIMS: The aim of the current study was to examine whether there is a relationship between PTSD and perfectionism. This is important to address as many studies have demonstrated a link between other anxiety disorders, eating disorders, depression and perfectionism. The research also aimed to examine whether rumination was a mediator of the relationship between PTSD and perfectionism. METHOD: The sample consisted of 30 participants who were currently i

Assessing treatments used to reduce rumination and/or worry: a systematic review.

Perseverative cognitions such as rumination and worry are key components of mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. Given the frequent comorbidity of conditions in which rumination and worry are present, it is possible that they are underpinned by the same cognitive process. Furthermore, rumination and worry appear to be part of a causal chain that can lead to long-term health consequences, including cardiovascular disease and other chronic conditions. It is important therefore to understand what interventions may be useful in reducing their incidence. This systematic review aimed to

Translation and initial validation of the Japanese version of the Ruminative Responses Scale.

The Ruminative Responses Scale (RRS) is a measure of depressive rumination and, although several versions have been developed, the version by Treynor and colleagues has been used most frequently in research. This version contains two subscales: Brooding and Reflection. In the present study, the 22-item RRS was translated into Japanese and psychometric properties of the measure were examined in two samples of Japanese undergraduate students (ns = 299 and 56). Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that a two-factor model of the RRS showed a moderate to good fit to the data. The total and subsca

Rumination mediates the association between cyber-victimization and depressive symptoms.

The current study examined the 3-week prospective associations between cyber-victimization and both depressive symptoms and rumination. In addition, a mediation model was tested, wherein rumination mediated the association between cyber-victimization and depressive symptoms. Participants (N = 565 college-age young adults) completed online surveys at two time points 3 weeks apart. Results indicated that cyber-victimization was associated with increases in both depressive symptoms and rumination over time. Furthermore, results of the path analysis indicated that cyber-victimization was associate

Rumen microbial (meta)genomics and its application to ruminant production.

Meat and milk produced by ruminants are important agricultural products and are major sources of protein for humans. Ruminant production is of considerable economic value and underpins food security in many regions of the world. However, the sector faces major challenges because of diminishing natural resources and ensuing increases in production costs, and also because of the increased awareness of the environmental impact of farming ruminants. The digestion of feed and the production of enteric methane are key functions that could be manipulated by having a thorough understanding of the rume…
