Cutis tricolor.

Cutis tricolor is characterized by the coexistence of congenital hyperpigmented and hypopigmented patches in the context of normally pigmented skin. We report the case of a 13-year-old white adolescent girl with cutis tricolor. We analyze other reported cases of cutis tricolor as well as other cases characterized by coexistent hyperpigmented and hypopigmented patches. Cutis tricolor seems to be a rather unique cutaneous manifestation and occurs either in isolation or in association with internal manifestations. Labeling any other case characterized by hyperpigmented and hypopigmented patches a

Blue-whitish veil-like structure as the primary dermoscopic feature of combined nevus.

The combined nevus is a clinical simulator of melanoma, and clinical examination alone can be inadequate to diagnose this melanocytic pigmented skin lesion. Dermoscopy is a useful tool to differentiate the features related to each type of nevus. We report two cases of combined nevi dermoscopically characterized by a diffuse blue-whitish pigmentation similar to the blue-whitish veil, suggesting the diagnosis of melanoma.

Remission of Prurigo Pigmentosa after Breaking Ketogenic Diet and Resuming Regular Diet.

Prurigo pigmentosa (PP) is a rare skin disorder presenting as erythematous urticarial papules on the chest and leaving reticulated pigmentation. Although the etiology of PP is unknown, conditions associated with ketosis such as diabetes mellitus, ketogenic diet (KD), and anorexia nervosa are implicated. Herein, we report a 21-year-old woman who developed PP after adhering to a KD and responded to resuming a regular diet.

Multiple pigmented basal cell carcinomas.

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common of all skin cancers and the most prevalent one among Caucasians. Rarely, these tumors are seen in other races. We report a 77-year-old Korean woman who presented with multiple darkly pigmented enlarging nodules on her scalp, face, trunk, and extremities. The patient had first noted a 6-mm pigmented lesion on her left eyebrow 10 years previously. Since then, other lesions had appeared in many locations on her body. She had been otherwise healthy and without a history of exposure to arsenic or radiation. There was no family history of skin cancer, xeroderm

Studies on café au lait spots in neurofibromatosis and pigmented macules of nevus spilus.

Café au lait spots from 14 Japanese patients with neurofibromatosis and nevus spilus from 9 Japanese patients were subjected to the studies on the differences in nature of their melanocytes. When the number of melanocytes of the pigmented lesions was compared with that of the surrounding normal skin, the former was always increased and that of café au lait spot was higher than that of nevus spilus. Giant pigment granules were recognized only in 6 patients out of 14 with neurofibromatosis but not in nevus spilus examined. 2 days after UV irradiation at 4 MED, the number of melanocytes was incre

Mucinosis follicularis provoked by light exposure.

The present paper reports a study on a case of follicular mucinosis exacerbated by sunlight exposure. Provocation with standardized light testing was carried out on both normally pigmented skin and on areas of hypopigmentation representing a residual state after earlier skin lesions but without any signs of active mucinosis follicularis. Typical clinical and histologically verified lesions were provoked by the light test procedure, best seen in hypopigmented areas but with similar changes in normally pigmented skin. Characteristic findings developed gradually, assuming an appearance identical

Layer-by-Layer Analysis of In Vitro Skin Models.

In vitro human skin models are evolving into versatile platforms for the study of skin biology and disorders. These models have many potential applications in the fields of drug testing and safety assessment, as well as cosmetic and new treatment development. The development of in vitro skin models that accurately mimic native human skin can reduce reliance on animal models and also allow for more precise, clinically relevant testing. Recent advances in biofabrication techniques and biomaterials have led to the creation of increasingly complex, multilayered skin models that incorporate importa

Resolution of vitiligo following excision of halo congenital melanocytic nevus: a rare case report.

Halo congenital melanocytic nevus (CMN) associated with vitiligo is rare, especially with regard to CMN excision. Only two reports of excision of halo CMN following repigmentation of vitiligo are found in the literature. We present a case of a girl with halo CMN and periorbital vitiligo. The halo CMN was excised and followed by spontaneous improvement of vitiligo. The result suggests excision of the inciting lesion may be a promising way to control vitiligo.

Morphological and transcriptional evaluation of multiple facial cutaneous hyperpigmented spots.

BACKGROUND: Morphological characteristics of major facial hyperpigmented spots have been well documented. However, detailed alterations of respective transcriptional profile for each spot and in-depth comparisons across multiple spot types have not been reported. OBJECTIVES: To comprehensively assess and compare multiple facial hyperpigmented spot types at the morphological and molecular levels by utilising transcriptional expression profiling with correlation to quantified histological features. METHODS: Multiple types of facial spot biopsies were collected from Chinese women and compared t

Novel Mutation of the TINF2 Gene in a Patient with Dyskeratosis Congenita.

Dyskeratosis congenita (DKC) is a rare inherited disease that is characterized by abnormal skin pigmentation, nail dystrophy and mucosal leukoplakia. DKC is caused by an abnormality in a component of the telomerase and shelterin complexes. TINF2 encodes a protein in the shelterin complex and TERC encodes a component of the telomerase complex. Mutations of both genes have been associated with DKC. This study examined mutations in TINF2.

Treatment of unwanted pigment.

Disorders of skin pigmentation pose significant challenges to both patients and physicians, as they have the unfortunate duality of being both common and difficult to treat conditions. This article reviews the etiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and treatment options for melasma and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation. A thorough understanding of the disease process itself, expected agent efficacy, risks, and benefits of various treatments is crucial while treating these complex conditions.

The first confirmed cases of full albinism in rajid species.

Three albino skate specimens (Rajidae) were captured from the North Sea and English Channel between 2008 and 2011. Using DNA barcoding (COI gene) and morphometric analyses, species were identified as a spotted ray Raja montagui, a blonde ray Raja brachyura and a thornback ray Raja clavata. This finding represents the first record of full albinism (a lack of skin and retinal pigmentation) in rajid species.
