Predicting DSM-III-R disorders from the Youth Self-Report: analysis of data from a field study.

OBJECTIVE: To predict DSM-III-R diagnoses from Youth Self-Report (YSR) scores. METHOD: The Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children Version 2.1c (DISC-2.1c) and YSR were administered to 289 homeless adolescents. Stepwise discriminant analysis identified YSR scales contributing to predictions of DSM-III-R disorders. Paper-and-pencil prediction rules based on YSR "borderline" or "clinical" scores were evaluated. RESULTS: Statistically significant discriminant functions for disruptive disorders, depressive disorders, manic disorders, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, schizophrenia, an

Learning impairments in Fmr1-/- mice on an audio-visual temporal pattern discrimination task.

Estimating time and making predictions is integral to our experience of the world. Given the importance of timing to most behaviors, disruptions in temporal processing and timed performance are reported in a number of neuropsychiatric disorders such as Schizophrenia, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Fragile X Syndrome (FXS), and Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Symptoms that implicitly include disruption in timing are atypical turn-taking during social interactions, unusual verbal intonations, poor reading, speech and language skills, inattention, delays in learning, and difficu

Prior juvenile diagnoses in adults with mental disorder: developmental follow-back of a prospective-longitudinal cohort.

BACKGROUND: If most adults with mental disorders are found to have a juvenile psychiatric history, this would shift etiologic research and prevention policy to focus more on childhood mental disorders. METHOD: Our prospective longitudinal study followed up a representative birth cohort (N = 1037). We made psychiatric diagnoses according to DSM criteria at 11, 13, 15, 18, 21, and 26 years of age. Adult disorders were defined in the following 3 ways: (1) cases diagnosed using a standardized diagnostic interview, (2) the subset using treatment, and (3) the subset receiving intensive mental healt

Mercury exposure, nutritional deficiencies and metabolic disruptions may affect learning in children.

Among dietary factors, learning and behavior are influenced not only by nutrients, but also by exposure to toxic food contaminants such as mercury that can disrupt metabolic processes and alter neuronal plasticity. Neurons lacking in plasticity are a factor in neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism and mental retardation. Essential nutrients help maintain normal neuronal plasticity. Nutritional deficiencies, including deficiencies in the long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, the amino acid methionine, and the trace minerals zinc and seleniu

The PTCHD1 protein: A prominent actor in brain function and in neurodevelopmental disorders.

Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) encompass a broad spectrum of conditions, including intellectual disability (ID), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorders (ASD), often linked to disrupted synaptic functionality. Among the major NDD genes, PTCHD1 (Patched Domain Containing 1) encodes a transmembrane protein which acts as a crucial regulator of synaptic function. Mutations and microdeletions in PTCHD1 have been associated with global developmental delays such as ID, ASD, and behavioral abnormalities. This review explores the neurodevelopmental functions

Therapeutic applications of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation with potential for application in neurodevelopmental or other pediatric disorders.

Non-invasive transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) as a newly developed technique involves stimulating the cutaneous receptive field formed by the auricular branch of the vagus nerve in the outer ear, with resulting activation of vagal connections to central and peripheral nervous systems. Increasing evidence indicates that maladaptive neural plasticity may underlie the pathology of several pediatric neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, disruptive behavioral disorder and stress-related disor

A current view on contactin-4, -5, and -6: Implications in neurodevelopmental disorders.

Contactins (Cntns) are a six-member subgroup of the immunoglobulin cell adhesion molecule superfamily (IgCAMs) with pronounced brain expression and function. Recent genetic studies of neuropsychiatric disorders have pinpointed contactin-4 (CNTN4), contactin-5 (CNTN5) and contactin-6 (CNTN6) as candidate genes in neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly in autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), but also in intellectual disability, schizophrenia (SCZ), attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder (BD), alcohol use disorder (AUD) and anorexia nervosa (AN). This suggests that the

Incorporating callous-unemotional behaviors into school-based research.

This study investigated the utility of including teacher-reported callous-unemotional (CU) behaviors in the assessment of disruptive behaviors in school-based research. Participants included 138 first- and second-grade children (68% male; 76% eligible for free or reduced-price lunch; 61% Black, 9% Latinx, 23% White, and 7% multiracial) who completed assessments during the baseline assessment of an intervention study. Results indicated that teachers could distinguish CU from traditional indicators of disruptive behavior, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) behaviors and co

Factor Analysis of Therapist-Identified Treatment Targets in Community-Based Children's Mental Health.

The present study used exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses to identify underlying latent factors affecting variation in community therapists' endorsement of treatment targets. As part of a statewide practice management program, therapist completed monthly reports of treatment targets (up to 10 per month) for a sample of youth (n = 790) receiving intensive in-home therapy. Nearly 75 % of youth were diagnosed with multiple co-occurring disorders. Five factors emerged: Disinhibition, Societal Rules Evasion, Social Engagement Deficits, Emotional Distress, and Management of Biodevelopmenta

Effectiveness of wraparound versus case management for children and adolescents: results of a randomized study.

In this study, we compared service experiences and outcomes for youths with serious emotional disorder (SED) randomly assigned to care coordination via a defined wraparound process (n = 47) versus more traditional intensive case management (ICM; n = 46) The wraparound group received more mean hours of care management and services; however, there ultimately were no group differences in restrictiveness of residential placement, emotional and behavioral symptoms, or functioning. Wraparound implementation fidelity was found to be poor. Organizational culture and climate, and worker morale, were po

Gender Effects in the Efficacy of Racemic Amphetamine Sulfate in Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: A laboratory classroom study in children aged 6-12 years with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) found that racemic amphetamine sulfate (RA-AMPH) significantly improved performance versus placebo from 45 min through 10 h post-dose (NCT01986062). A secondary analysis assessed gender as a potential moderator of response to treatment comparing the ADHD Rating Scale-IV (ADHD-RS-IV) and Swanson, Kotkin, Agler, M-Flynn and Pelham (SKAMP) rating scales. METHODS: After 8 weeks of open-label RA-AMPH dose optimization using improvement in ADHD-RS-IV symptoms as a guide, 97 su

CAOS contribution to understanding cultural/ethnic differences in the prevalence of bipolar affective disorder in New Zealand.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether data on the clinical profiles of psychiatric service users can inform the claim that Māori in the New Zealand community have an increased rate of bipolar disorder. METHOD: The standardized recordings of a variety of clinical phenomena previously collected in a New Zealand study of psychiatric service users was extracted for those persons who were diagnosed with a bipolar mental disorder. The individual clinical phenomena were then compared by ethnicity. RESULTS: The most dramatic result was the increased recording of high levels of overactivity or disruptive agg

Child-specific and family-wide risk factors using the retrospective Childhood Experience of Care & Abuse (CECA) instrument: a life-course study of adult chronic depression - 3.

BACKGROUND: An earlier paper [Brown, G.W., Craig, T.K.J., Harris, T.O., Handley, R.V., Harvey, A.L., 2007a-this issue. Development of a retrospective interview measure of parental maltreatment using the Childhood Experience of Care & Abuse (CECA) instrument - a life-course study of adult chronic depression - 1. J. Affect. Disord. doi:10.1016/j.jad.2007.05.022] documented an association between parental maltreatment and risk of adult chronic depression. This paper explores the contribution of other child-specific factors (e.g. conduct problems) and family-wide factors (e.g. parental discord).

Behavioral and psychiatric features of Sturge-Weber syndrome.

Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is characterized by seizures, port-wine birthmarks, vascular malformations, and rarely studied psychobehavioral features. This study describes a small group of outpatients (N = 16, age, 3-34 years) with Sturge-Weber syndrome seeking medical services (due to seizures, ophthalmological, and dermatological problems among others). The patients were screened for psychiatric diagnoses. The most frequent diagnoses were mood disorder (31%), disruptive behavior disorder (25%), and adjustment disorder (25%). A substance-related disorder was the most frequent in adults (67%).

Methylphenidate treatment increases hippocampal BDNF levels but does not improve memory deficits in hypoxic-ischemic rats.

BACKGROUND: Methylphenidate (MPH) is a stimulant drug mainly prescribed to treat cognitive impairments in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We demonstrated that neonatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI) induced attentional deficits in rats and MPH administration reversed these deficits. However, MPH effects on memory deficits after the HI procedure have not been evaluated yet. AIMS: We aimed to analyze learning and memory performance of young hypoxic-ischemic rats after MPH administration and associate their performance with brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in the prefronta
