A single session of motivational interviewing as an additive means to improve adherence in periodontal infection control: a randomized controlled trial.

AIM: To evaluate the effect of a single session of motivational interviewing (MI) on self-performed periodontal infection control. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A randomized, examiner masked, controlled clinical trial of 6-month duration was performed involving 44 patients with chronic periodontitis, referred for periodontal treatment. At baseline, all subjects were examined concerning marginal gingival bleeding (MBI) and plaque (PI). Test subjects received a single MI-session before initiation of the periodontal treatment. Otherwise, all patients followed the same treatment protocol for conventional…

Effectiveness of infection control measures in controlling a nosocomial outbreak of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis among HIV patients in Italy.

SETTING: Between October 1992 and February 1994, 33 cases of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) were diagnosed among patients infected by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hospitalised in an HIV ward in Milan, Italy. This outbreak was part of a much larger outbreak, begun in another hospital and probably transferred through a patient. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate risk factors for transmission and the effectiveness of infection control measures. DESIGN: 1) Active follow-up of exposed patients, 2) cohort study among HIV-infected patients exposed to MDR-TB cases before and after the i…

Clustered cases of Candida auris colonization: Roles of the infection prevention and control department and the mycology laboratory in controlling transmission.

Candida auris is an emerging yeast that is responsible for outbreaks via nosocomial transmission. This study describes two cases of C. auris colonization, with confirmed interhospital transmission in the absence of travel history for the index case, although multiple risk factors were present. The role of the infection prevention and control department is essential in implementing barrier measures to limit yeast transmission, whereas the mycology laboratory plays a crucial role in the rapid and effective detection of potential contact cases, as well as environmental contamination.

A Randomized Controlled Trial to Investigate Safety and Variability of Egg Excretion After Repeated Controlled Human Hookworm Infection.

BACKGROUND: Controlled human hookworm infections could significantly contribute to the development of a hookworm vaccine. However, current models are hampered by low and unstable egg output, reducing generalizability and increasing sample sizes. This study aims to investigate the safety, tolerability, and egg output of repeated exposure to hookworm larvae. METHODS: Twenty-four healthy volunteers were randomized, double-blindly, to 1, 2, or 3 doses of 50 Necator americanus L3 larvae at 2-week intervals. Volunteers were monitored weekly and were treated with albendazole at week 20. RESULTS: Th

NRTI Sparing Therapy in Virologically Controlled HIV-1 Infected Subjects: Results of a Controlled, Randomized Trial (Probe).

Dual treatments could help clinicians to avoid drawbacks and toxicities due to the nucleosidic backbone, while maintaining the efficacy and convenience of robust combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). We explored the combination of rilpivirine plus boosted darunavir (DRV) as an option when switching from standard cART in patients who are virologically suppressed. In this randomized, open-label, proof-of-concept, noninferiority trial, we recruited patients aged 18 years or older with chronic HIV-1 infection and on a stable, effective (>6 months) protease inhibitor-based cART including a nuc

A modified case-control study of cryptosporidiosis (using non-Cryptosporidium-infected enteric cases as controls) in a community setting.

Data from the first sentinel site (Waterloo Region, Ontario) of the Canadian Integrated Enteric Disease Surveillance System (C-EnterNet) were used in a secondary-based case-control study of laboratory-confirmed Cryptosporidium infections to study the role of various exposure factors. The incidence of cryptosporidiosis in Waterloo Region was almost double both the provincial and national rates. Persons ill with one of nine other enteric infections (amoebiasis, campylobacteriosis, cyclosporiasis, giardiasis, listeriosis, salmonellosis, shigellosis, verotoxigenic E. coli infections, yersiniosis)

Defatting catheter insertion sites in total parenteral nutrition is of no value as an infection control measure. Controlled clinical trial.

Defatting the skin with acetone or ether is widely used in the regimen for disinfection of insertion sites of central venous catheters in total parenteral nutrition. The fatty acids secreted by normal skin play an important role in regulation of the cutaneous microbial ecosystem, and it can be questioned whether application of a solvent might paradoxically promote colonization by pathogenic microorganisms. The clinical value of defatting catheter insertion sites was prospectively studied in a controlled, randomized trial: 100 subclavian catheters inserted for total parenteral nutrition were gi

The mediating role of work engagement between perceived organizational support and work competency among Chinese infection control practitioners.

BACKGROUND: Infection control practitioners (ICPs) play a fundamental role in preventing and controlling healthcare-associated infections. ICPs' work competency is associated with work engagement and perceived organizational support (POS); however, the intercorrelations and mechanisms among Chinese ICPs remain unknown. Based on the job demands-resources (JD-R) model and conservation of resources (COR) theory, this study aimed to test the mediating effect of work engagement on the relationship between POS and work competency. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 340 ICPs from 8…
