Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were recorded from four patients with surgically verified chiasmal gliomas. Despite good visual acuity, 6/12(20/40) or better in each eye, these patients showed substantially reduced VEP amplitudes to a diffuse flash stimulus and hardly detectable responses to a highly textured checkerboard-pattern stimulus. The dissociation between evoked electrical activity and visual acuity is noteworthy; this differs from previously reported findings in patients with extrinsic compressing lesions of the chiasm or with lesions of demyelinating disease, which usually reduce VE

Normal visual acuity requires a stationary retinal image on the fovea. If fixation instabilities cause movement of the retinal image across the fovea for a few degrees, visual acuity is diminished. Nystagmus as the fixation instability, consequently, may impair vision. Period of foveation is the area in the wave form, i.e. a brief period of time when the eye is still and is pointed at the object of regard. At this period eye velocity is at a minimum and visual acuity is the best. In the children with congenital ocular nystagmus, using usual clinical equipment (TC 1.0 and TC 0.3 s), was perform

Fifty-one eyes of 48 patients with perforating (through-and-through) injuries of the globe were treated with vitrectomy during a 12-year period. Functional success was obtained in 32 eyes (63%), anatomic success was obtained in nine eyes (17%), and treatment failed in 10 eyes (20%). In 16 eyes (32%), 20/20 to 20/100 visual acuity was obtained; in 17 eyes (33%), 20/200 to 5/200 visual acuity was obtained; and in 18 eyes (35%), less than 5/200 visual acuity was obtained. The mechanism of injury was an important prognostic indicator of final visual outcome. Eight (62%) of 13 eyes that sustained k

Background: Symptomatic aneurysms of the anterior cerebral artery causing visual impairments are rare and preponderantly lacking in the literature. It is further under discussion, whether operative clipping or endovascular coiling might be superior in order to achieve visual recovery. We therefore present a case of a patient with progressive visual loss caused by an aneurysm of the right A1-A2 segment compressing the ipsilateral optic nerve. Methods: A 57-year-old woman was admitted to our neurosurgical department with visual impairment of the right eye. On admission, visual acuity was 0.05 dp

As part of a multicenter study of excimer laser procedures, we performed phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) on 12 eyes in 11 patients. Three eyes had superficial corneal scarring, two Salzmann's degeneration, two Reis-Bückler's dystrophy; and one each with recurrent lattice dystrophy in a corneal graft, band keratopathy, recurrent erosion syndrome, after pterygium scarring, and contact-lens related keratopathy. Indications for treatment included poor visual acuity, severe glare symptoms, ocular surface discomfort, recurrent erosions, and monocular diplopia. Follow up ranged from 1 to 4 months.

In a prospective evaluation of 154 consecutive retinal detachment procedures, the incidence of choroidal detachment was 39.6%. The age of the patient, drainage of subretinal fluid, and vortex compression by the explant seem to be the most important correlative factors. Scleral explants up to one quadrant in circumferential length produced a minimal incidence (7.7%) of choroidal detachment. Posterior positioning of the explant also affected the incidence of choroidal detachment. After follow-up, ranging from six to 48 months, postoperative visual acuity was recorded for "macula-on" as well as "

PURPOSE: To describe and evaluate a visual acuity assessment paradigm based on spatial frequency-modulated form discrimination for induced and disease-driven vision loss.
METHODS: The Patterned-Optotype-in-Noise Task (POINT) consisted of arrow-shaped random noise patterns, each with a 1/f2 amplitude spectrum overlaid on a low-pass filtered background. Stimulus difficulty varied logarithmically across 22 levels by adjusting the background cutoff spatial frequency, relative to foreground. Monocular acuity was measured for POINT stimuli and letter optotypes in 20 adults (21-46 years) with 0-4D o
