Biological compatibility of a tissue engineered construct of the trachea (synthetic scaffold) and allogenic mesenchymal stem cells was studied on laboratory Papio hamadryas primates. BACKGROUND: This single center study assesses the outcome of aortic valve sparing reimplantation (AVS) in 284 consecutive patients who were operated on for various indications during the last 11 years.

This is a study of 97 patients who underwent 106 femoropopliteal bypass grafts (9 bilateral bypasses) for short-distance claudication and critical ischemia. Patients were divided into 2 groups. The first group (n=64) was followed up by use of duplex scans. The second group (n=42) was followed up in clinic without duplex surveillance. OBJECTIVE: Recently, a two-dimensional Silastic Dacron stretching skin device has been developed for scalp reduction surgery. Attached subgaleally, this device stretches skin over time, while avoiding the visible volumetric distention that is typical of three-dimensional tissue expanders. Two patients who had aortopulmonary fistula of postoperative origin with hemoptysis underwent successful repair by means of an endovascular stent graft procedure. One patient had undergone repeated thoracotomies two times, and the other one time to repair anastomotic aneurysms of the descending aorta after surgery for Takayasu's arteritis. Emergency surgery for acute type A dissection is extremely difficult when the sinuses of Valsalva are widely dissected. Indications for the various proposed surgical approaches are controversial. OBJECTIVES: To compare the patency of PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) and unsealed knitted Dacron femoro-popliteal bypasses.
DESIGN: Multi-centre prospective randomised trial.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of 203 patients randomised, 194 were included in the final analysis (103 Dacron grafts and 91 PTFE grafts). The median follow-up was 36 months (range: 6-72 months); the distal anastomosis was above-knee in 141 and below-knee in 53 cases. Univariate comparisons of patency were made by the Kaplan-Meier method, multivariate calculations on the effects of covariables by a Cox regression analysis.
