Arthrographic differential diagnosis between ruptures of the anterior talofibular ligament, the joint capsule and the anterior tibiofibular ligament.

From literature study, surgical findings and cadaver experiments, it is unlikely that, in an inversion type ankle sprain, rupture of the anterior tibiofibular ligament frequently accompanies rupture of the capsule and the lateral ligaments. Contrary to the experience of other authors, we found the presence or absence of a) a contrast-free zone, b) the tibiofibular recess, or c) both together, on ankle arthrography in no way indicative of a rupture of the anterior tibiofibular ligament. Contrast leakage out of the joint into the soft tissues without leakage below and lateral to the lateral mall

Bilateral digital artery thrombosis: a case report.

Blunt arterial trauma can cause digital arterial occlusion, and vein grafts may be required to restore adequate digital blood flow, as in the case of this 55-year-old man who developed thrombosis of both the radial and ulnar digital arteries of the ring finger.

Minor injuries in older adults have different characteristics, injury patterns, and outcomes when compared with younger adults: an emergency department correlation study.

AIM: To examine the injury patterns, characteristics, and outcomes of older adults presenting with minor injuries compared with younger adults. BACKGROUND: Sustaining a minor injury is one of the most common reasons people present to an Emergency Department. Many presentations involve older Australians and greater than 50% of older adults are discharged from the Emergency Department. However, little is known about the characteristics, injury patterns, and outcomes of minor injuries in older adults compared to younger adults. METHODS: A 12-month exploratory correlational study was conducted u

Prevention of soccer injuries. Supervision by doctor and physiotherapist.

To study the efficacy of an injury prevention program in a randomized trial, 12 teams (180 players) in a male senior soccer division were fo … es in the test teams were 75% fewer than in the controls. The most common types of soccer injuries, sprains and strains to ankles and knees, were all significantly reduced. It is concluded that the proposed prophylactic program, including close supervision and correction by doctors and physiotherapists, significantly reduces soccer injuries.

Effects of Strength Training Program and Infrared Thermography in Soccer Athletes Injuries.

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects of a periodized strength training program and the use of infrared thermography (IRT) in injuries mapping in under 20-year-old (U-20) soccer players. In this study, 26 professional soccer players participated in strength training (ST) twice a week and were tested with IRT consistently across the 1-year. Strength, vertical jump, heat differences and injuries were tracked and analyzed. Results: 69 injuries occurred during 12 months of tracking; most identified injuries were: contusions, sprains, strains to the thigh (n = 16), ankle (n =

Hospitalisation for injuries among Finnish conscripts in 1990-1999.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the incidence, trends and nature of hospitalisation for injuries among Finnish conscripts between 1990 and 1999. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: A hospital discharge register study on the hospitalisation for injuries with a follow-up of 213509-person-years. RESULTS: During the 10-year study period, altogether 20016 hospitalisations for injuries were registered. Over this period, the annual incidence of hospitalisation for injuries declined with 26%, from 113.3 (95% CI: 108.7-118.0) per 1000 conscripts in 1990 to 84.1 (95% CI: 80.0-88.2) in 1999. Summer and autumn were the se

Hip Pain in the Pre-Arthritic Patient: A Guide for the Primary Care Physician.

Adolescents and young adults (less than 30 years of age) with pre-arthritic hip pain constitute a diagnostic dilemma for the primary care physician. The most common underlying diagnoses range from benign muscle strains/joint sprains to stress reactions, insufficiency fractures, and tears involving the articular cartilage/labrum in the setting of femoroacetabular impingement, a hip shape abnormality that is present in up to 90% of this age group. Undetected or left untreated these seemingly innocuous disorders can result in significant loss of function and, in some cases, irreversible joint dam

Decreasing Incidence of Youth Wrestling Injuries: A 10-Year Analysis of National Injury Data.

BACKGROUND: Wrestling is among the most common youth sports in the United States, with about 260,000 high school participants annually. There is a lack of literature investigating wrestling injury profiles and mechanisms of injuries. In the past 15 years, urgent care utilization has increased, and National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) concussion protocols have been developed and implemented. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to analyze causes, diagnoses, body parts, and trends associated with wrestling injuries presenting to US emergency departments. It

The epidemiology of United States high school soccer injuries, 2005-2007.

BACKGROUND: United States high school soccer participation increased 5 fold over the last 30 years. With increased participation comes increased injury incidence. HYPOTHESIS: High school soccer injury patterns will vary by gender and type of exposure. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiologic study. METHODS: Soccer-related injury data were collected over the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 school years from 100 nationally representative United States high schools via Reporting Information Online (RIO, an Internet-based sports-related injury surveillance system). RESULTS: Participating certified athl

Child labor in Ghana cocoa production: focus upon agricultural tasks, ergonomic exposures, and associated injuries and illnesses.

OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to determine the occupational hazards experienced by children harvesting cocoa in western Ghana in order to design a vocational literacy life skills curriculum and radio social messaging campaign with a safety component to decrease hazardous work exposures in child agricultural work. METHODS: An observational analysis was conducted of children aged 9 through 17 based upon personal interviews of agricultural workers, focus groups, and direct observation of work practices and activities. Job site analysis incorporated task mapping, job hazard review, and a

Surveillance of construction worker injuries: the utility of trade-specific analysis.

Construction is a dangerous industry, with high rates of both fatal and nonfatal injuries. To learn more about the causes of nonfatal construction worker injuries, and to identify injury cases for further work site-based investigations or prevention programs, we established an emergency department-based surveillance program in November 1990. This article describes circumstances of injury, diagnoses, and demographic characteristics of injured construction workers for 2,791 cases identified through mid-August, 1997. Lacerations and strains and sprains were the most frequent diagnoses; cutting an
