Modeling the Determinants of Subjective Well-Being in Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: The ultimate goal of successful schizophrenia treatment is not just to alleviate psychotic symptoms, but also to reduce distress and achieve subjective well-being (SWB). We aimed to identify the determinants of SWB and their interrelationships in schizophrenia. METHODS: Data were obtained from 637 patients with schizophrenia enrolled in multicenter, open-label, non-comparative clinical trials. The SWB under the Neuroleptic Treatment Scale (SWN) was utilized; a cut-off score of 80 indicated a high level of SWB at baseline and 6 months. Various machine learning (ML) algorithms were

[Recent development of the ICD-11 focusing on the draft of its linear structure].

I overviewed the draft of the linear structure (22nd May, 2013) of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Eleventh Revision. In this draft, sleep and sexual disorders were not included in mental and behavioural disorders. The World Health Organization decided not to regard them as mental disorders. The primary classification of neurocognitive disorders was also not included in mental and behavioural disorders. In the draft of the linear structure, 25 major categories were classified: neurodevelopmental disorders, disorders of speech and language,

The relationship between neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) and NLRP3 inflammasome.

The brain's process of creating neural networks that affect functionality or performance is referred to as neurodevelopment. A person's capacity to learn and remember, pay attention, regulate their emotions, socialize, exercise and self-control are just a few of the cognitive and motor abilities that can be affected by abnormal brain development. Numerous neurodevelopmental diseases have been functionally related to abnormalities in innate immune signaling networks. Innate immunity is in charge of the defense of humans against pathogens and tissue damage by triggering inflammation, mainly thro

Deformed probability estimation in the goal-directed reinforcement learning model explains anxious-depression dimension of psychiatric disorders.

Psychiatric disorders are complex, multidimensional pathologies rooted in various cognitive processes. Computational psychiatry aims to reveal distortions in these processes through behavior modeling, providing a deeper understanding of psychiatric disorders. Previous studies that used Daw's two-stage task linked imbalances between habitual/model-free and goal-directed/model-based behaviors to disorders featuring compulsive behaviors and intrusive thoughts. The model-based part depends on estimating environmental probabilities. To improve this, we incorporated a well-known distortion in subjec

Evaluation of poststreptococcal illness.

Group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal pharyngitis, scarlet fever, and rarely asymptomatic carrier states are associated with a number of poststreptococcal suppurative and nonsuppurative complications. As in streptococcal pharyngitis, acute rheumatic fever, pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infection, and poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis most often occur in children. The hallmarks of rheumatic fever include arthritis, carditis, cutaneous disease, chorea, and subsequent acquired valvular disease. Pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders encom

Association between mental illness and disciplinary confinement and its effect on mental health: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The use of disciplinary confinement (DC) as a form of punishment in detention raises international attention and many concerns that have led to the elaboration of several studies. However, as studies report mixed results regarding the risk of DC placement for mentally ill inmates and the possibility of psychological effects from exposure to DC, it was necessary to shed some light in order to better guide future decisions, policies and programs in detention. Thus, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the risk of inmates with mental disorders being placed into disciplinary

The prevalence of diagnosed obsessive compulsive disorder and associated comorbidities: A population-based Canadian study.

The objective of this study was to provide epidemiological data regarding obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) in Canada, and examine related conditions, childhood experiences and healthcare utilization. A Statistics Canada population-based health survey was utilized (N = 25,097). The prevalence of diagnosed OCD in Canada was 0.93% (95% CI 0.75-1.11). People with OCD were younger and more likely to have lower incomes. They were more likely to have mood disorders including depression and bipolar disorder (both diagnosed conditions and by screening), and generalized anxiety disorder. The diagnosi

Clinical Characteristics of Pediatric Trichotillomania: Comparisons with Obsessive-Compulsive and Tic Disorders.

This study compared youth ages 5-17 years with a primary diagnosis of trichotillomania (TTM, n = 30) to those with primary OCD (n = 30) and tic disorder (n = 29) on demographic characteristics, internalizing, and externalizing symptoms. Findings suggest that youth with primary TTM score more comparably to youth with tics than those with OCD on internalizing and externalizing symptom measures. Compared to the OCD group, youth in the TTM group reported lower levels of anxiety and depression. Parents of youth in the TTM group also reported fewer internalizing, externalizing, attention, and though

Prevalence of anxiety disorders comorbidity in bipolar depression, unipolar depression and dysthymia.

Eighty-seven patients with current episode of depression were assessed by the SCID-P and subdivided in bipolar depressives (N = 24), unipolar depressives (n = 38) and dysthymics (n = 25). Anxiety disorders comorbidity in these three groups was investigated by means of the SCID-P. Panic disorder comorbidity was found in 36.8% of bipolar depressives, 31.4% of unipolar depressives and 13% of dysthymics. Prevalence of obsessive-compulsive disorder was 21.1% in bipolars, 14.3% in unipolars and 8.7% in dysthymics. Generalized anxiety disorder resulted in being much more associated with dysthymia (65

Genetics, sex, and gender.

This review aims to give an overview of what has been discovered so far and what still needs to be analyzed about how sex and gender affect the disease development. These two terms are often confused and indifferently used. In principle, the term "sex" refers to biological differences between males and females, specifically reproductive organs and their functions, while the term "gender" refers to the social context in which people live and which contributes to a subjective sexual identity, masculine or feminine. This dichotomy, however, is not so rigid and both sex and gender influence differ

Experimental manipulation of beliefs about the importance of thoughts and the effect on an aggressive impulse.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive models of obsessive-compulsive disorder attribute a causal role to maladaptive beliefs. AIMS: To test this hypothesis, we manipulated Overimportance of Thoughts (OT) beliefs and experimentally evaluated their effect on the response to an induced aggressive impulse. METHOD: Eighty-five participants completed a battery of self-report instruments assessing obsession symptoms, thought control, affectivity and obsessive beliefs, and were then randomly assigned to two conditions. In the experimental condition participants read a scientific abstract on the importance of though
