INTRODUCTION: Reconnections to pulmonary vein (PV) triggers of atrial fibrillation (AF) are the primary cause of AF recurrence after PV isolation (PVI) with radiofrequency (RF) or cryoballoon catheter ablation (CRYO), but method-specific contributions to PV reconduction pattern and conductive gap location are incompletely understood.
METHODS: The objective of this radiofrequency versus cryoballoon catheter ablation for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation substudy was to determine procedure-specific patterns of PV reconduction in a randomized population with protocol-mandated repeat procedures, irr

BACKGROUNDS: Catheter ablation for non-paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (non-PAF) remains challenging and more effective strategy has been required to reduce postoperative arrhythmia recurrences. This study aims to investigate the efficacy and safety of a novel extensive ablation strategy for non-PAF, that is based on a combination of cryoballoon (CBA), radiofrequency (RFA), and Marshall-vein ethanol ablations (EA-VOM).
METHODS: The study was a single-center, retrospective observational study. We enrolled 171 consecutive patients who underwent de-novo catheter ablation for non-PAF under conscio

Percutaneous cryoablation of renal tumors is widely used because of its high efficacy and safety. This high safety can be attributed, at least in part, to the visibility of the ablated area as an "ice ball". This therapy has fewer complications (incidence, 0-7.2%) and is less invasive than surgery. Minor bleeding is inevitable in most kidney-related procedures, and indeed the most common complication of this therapy is bleeding (hematoma and hematuria). However, patients require treatment such as transfusion or transarterial embolization in only 0-4% of bleeding cases. Various other complicati

BACKGROUND: We first utilized and reported on the use of cryoanalgesia for postoperative pain control for Nuss procedure in 2016. We hypothesized that postoperative pain control could be optimized if the intercostal nerve anatomy is better understood. To test this hypothesis, human cadavers were dissected to elucidate the intercostal nerve anatomy. Cryoablation technique was modified.
METHODS: Cadaver Study: Adult cadavers were used to visualize the branching patterns of the intercostal nerves. Cryoablation: Posterior to the mid-axillary line for intercostal nerves 4, 5, 6 and 7, main interco

BACKGROUND: Cryoablation during minimally invasive repair for pectus excavatum (MIRPE) reduces opioid use and hospital length of stay. Skin hypoesthesia of the chest wall also occurs. This study sought to determine the frequency, onset, duration, and location of sensory changes and neuropathic pain after cryoablation.
METHODS: A prospective study was conducted on patients aged ≤21 years undergoing MIRPE with cryoablation of T3 to T7 dermatomes bilaterally for 120 s at a single institution between March 2021 to December 2022. Patients underwent sensory testing of the chest wall and neuropathic

BACKGROUND: Intercostal nerve cryoablation (cryoanalgesia) is increasingly used for pain control in minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum (MIRPE) by Nuss procedure. Cryoanalgesia may lower core body temperature and increase the risk of postoperative infectious complications. We investigated cryoanalgesia effects on infectious complications following MIRPE.
METHOD: We performed a retrospective review of patients undergoing MIRPE at our institution. Patients treated via multimodal analgesia with cryoanalgesia (Cryo) were compared to patients treated via multimodal analgesia +/- elastome

Introduction: Cryoablation of intercostal nerves is performed for pain control after minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum (MIRPE). Cryoablation affects both sensory and motor neurons, resulting in temporary anesthesia to the chest wall and loss of intercostal motor function. The study objective is to determine the effect of cryoablation on incentive spirometry (IS) volumes, as a measure of pulmonary function, after MIRPE. Materials and Methods: A single-institution retrospective review of pediatric patients undergoing MIRPE was performed. All patients received a multimodal regimen (MM

BACKGROUND: Cryolipolysis is a noninvasive method of destroying adipocytes using controlled cooling, thereby enabling localized and targeted fat reduction. Due to their greater vulnerability to cold injury, adipocytes are selectively targeted, while other cell types are spared.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to develop a mouse model of cryolipolysis to offer a reliable and convenient alternative to human models, providing a methodology to validate clinical hypotheses in-depth with relative ease, low cost, and efficiency. This further facilitates comprehensive studies of the molecular mechanisms

BACKGROUND: In children with typical atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (tAVNRT), cryoablation is preferred over radiofrequency ablation (RFA) because of its safety profile and acceptable long-term success rates. In this study, we have assessed the utility of 8-mm tip cryocatheters for tAVNRT ablation in our center.
METHODS: All pediatric AVNRT patients who underwent cryoablation with an 8-mm tip cryocatheter in our center between 2013 and 2018 were included. EnSite™ (St. Jude Medical Inc., St. Paul, MN, USA) was used in all patients.
RESULTS: A total of 120 patients (64 females, 5

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and safety of superior vena cava (SVC) isolation in addition to standard pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) using the second-generation cryoballoon (CB) in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.
METHODS: Thirty-seven consecutive patients that underwent CB ablation for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) were prospectively enrolled in our study. After PVI the SVC was mapped for potentials. If the SVC exhibited electrical activity, isolation was achieved performing a single 180-s balloon application.
RESULTS: Regarding SVC

INTRODUCTION: Single-shot devices have been developed to simplify pulmonary vein isolation (PVI). Randomized studies of the second-generation cryoballoon (CB 2nd) demonstrated excellent results. There are limited data comparing results of circular pulmonary vein ablation catheter (PVAC) with conventional RF ablation or CB for PVI.
OBJECTIVE: Using a sequential registry cohort and a prospective randomized study, we aimed to compare the acute and long-term results of CB 2nd and PVAC Gold.
METHODS: In the registry, consecutive patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) undergoing their f

Renal cryoablation has become accepted as treatment for small renal tumors as an alternative to surgery. However, parallel with the increase in the use of this therapy, there also has been increases in the number of reports of complications related to renal cryoablation. One potential complication is injury to important non-renal structures adjacent to the ablated renal tumor, such as the colon, duodenum, ureter, psoas muscle and so on. To prevent injury of adjacent organs, separating organs from the tumor is desirable. Over the past 15 years, several techniques have been developed to protect
