Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a serious global risk factor leading to the onset of cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative diseases. Cognitive and memory impairment following a TBI is associated with the dysregulation of cholinergic neurotransmission in the brains of subjects. The extent of memory impairment following a TBI is linked with the sex of the subject. This study aimed to identify the sex-dimorphic role of muscarinic cholinergic modulation in neurological functioning and episodic memory retrieval in a mouse model of TBI. Balb/c mice were divided into four groups of males and fou

The developing hippocampus is highly sensitive to chemotherapy and cranial radiation treatments for pediatric cancers, yet little is known about the effects that cancer treatents have on specific hippocampal subfields. Here, we examined hippocampal subfield volumes in 29 pediatric brain tumor survivors treated with cranial radiation and chemotherapy, and 30 healthy developing children and adolescents. We also examined associations between hippocampal subfield volumes and short-term verbal memory. Hippocampal subfields (Cornus Ammonis (CA) 1, CA2-3, dentate gyrus (DG)-CA4, stratum radiatum-lacu

OBJECTIVES: Imagining future events, which contain episodic and non-episodic details, has been found to (1) engage the temporal lobes bilaterally and (2) be impaired in patients with bilateral temporal lobe pathology. Here, we examined whether unilateral temporal lobe dysfunction also impairs the ability to generate future events.
DESIGN: Prospective cross-sectional.
METHODS: Twenty patients with a history of unilateral temporal lobe epilepsy [TLE; 10 left (LTLE) and 10 right (RTLE)] and 20 normal control (NC) subjects comparable on age, sex and education completed the Adapted Autobiographic

BACKGROUND: In the central nervous system (CNS), the muscarinic system plays key roles in learning and memory, as well as in the regulation of many sensory, motor, and autonomic processes, and is thought to be involved in the pathophysiology of several major diseases of the CNS, such as Alzheimer's disease, depression, and schizophrenia. Previous studies reveal that M4 muscarinic receptor knockout (M4R KO) mice displayed an increase in basal locomotor activity, an increase in sensitivity to the prepulse inhibition (PPI)-disrupting effect of psychotomimetics, and normal basal PPI. However, othe

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to better understand the effect of social disconnection on cognitive aging regarding its life course variation, temporal dynamics, and multidimensionality.
METHODS: We conducted coordinated data analysis of three large U.S. population-based longitudinal cohort panels (Add Health I-VI, MIDUS 1-3, and HRS 2006-2020) consisting of 18,553 individuals aged 11+. We harmonized measures of longitudinal patterns of social isolation and loneliness (never/transient/persistent), episodic memory (word recalls), and working memory (backward digit span and serial 7's) across data

Trauma-related intrusive memories (TR-IMs) possess unique phenomenological properties that contribute to adverse post-traumatic outcomes, positioning them as critical intervention targets. However, transdiagnostic treatments for TR-IMs are scarce, as their underlying mechanisms have been investigated separate from their unique phenomenological properties. Extant models of more general episodic memory highlight dynamic hippocampal-cortical interactions that vary along the anterior-posterior axis of the hippocampus (HPC) to support different cognitive-affective and sensory-perceptual features of

The human hippocampus is involved in forming new memories: damage impairs memory. The dual stream model suggests that object "what" representations from ventral stream temporal cortex project to the hippocampus via the perirhinal and then lateral entorhinal cortex, and spatial "where" representations from the dorsal parietal stream via the parahippocampal gyrus and then medial entorhinal cortex. The hippocampus can then associate these inputs to form episodic memories of what happened where. Diffusion tractography was used to reveal the direct connections of hippocampal system areas in humans.

Background: Patients with postacute anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate (anti-NMDA) receptor encephalitis are often left with permanent memory impairments. Given that NMDA receptors are essential to memory encoding, and encoding processes have been suggested to contribute to the success of memory retrieval, we investigate whether postacute anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis leads to abnormal brain activation during verbal memory encoding and its potential effects on subsequent memory retrieval performance. Methods: To address this issue, this study recruited 21 adult patients with anti-NMDA receptor enceph

Introduction: There is a burgeoning interest in the effects of odor exposure on autobiographical memory in Alzheimer's disease (AD). We pursued this line of research by assessing the effect of odor exposure on the retrieval of recent and remote memories in AD. Method: Twenty-six patients with mild AD and 28 controls were tested in two conditions: with and without odor exposure. In each condition, participants were invited to retrieve two childhood memories, two adulthood memories, and two recent memories. Results: Analysis showed that AD patients produced a higher number of and more specific c

The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the event-based prospective memory (EBPM) and time-based prospective memory (TBPM) in androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT)-induced cognitive impairment in patients with prostate cancer (PC). Participants included PC patients who had undergone ADT (ADT group, n = 43) or patients who did not undergo ADT (non-ADT group, n = 35), as well as age and education-matched healthy controls (HC group, n = 40). All participants were administered with a battery of neuropsychological tests including EBPM and TBPM tasks. Our results indicated that during the EBP

We investigated whether olfactory stimulation can enhance the retrieval of contextual details-"who/where/when"-during autobiographical memory recall in patients with Alzheimer's-disease (AD). Previous research has shown that odors can trigger vivid autobiographical memories in healthy-adults, but evidence in AD is limited, and most studies have focused on general memory recall rather than specific contextual information. Given that a key feature of autobiographical decline in AD is difficulty retrieving contextual details, it remains unclear whether olfactory cues can selectively improve recal

INTRODUCTION: Imagery Rescripting (ImRs) is an evidence-based technique for modifying the emotional meaning of distressing autobiographical memories, which are common in depression. This randomized controlled trial examined whether adding three ImRs sessions to ongoing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) improves outcomes compared with an active imagery-based control condition.
METHOD: Sixty-six patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) receiving outpatient CBT were randomized to three sessions of either (1) ImRs or (2) guided imagery (GI), both delivered as adjunctive interventions to rou

Interpretation biases and inflexibility in resolving ambiguous social situations are central to cognitive models of depression and anxiety, yet the mechanisms that shape these interpretation processes remain insufficiently understood. This preregistered experiment tested whether experimentally inducing dampening versus amplifying responses to positive emotion causally influences how people interpret and update ambiguous social information. Dutch adults (n = 268) completed a positive autobiographical memory induction and were randomly assigned to a dampening, amplifying, or control condition. P

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive effects of endocrine therapy (ET) in breast cancer are often subtle and may escape detection by standard neuropsychological assessments. Prospective memory (PM)-the ability to carry out intended actions-is particularly sensitive to mild cognitive changes, and crucial for autonomy and treatment adherence. This study examined the impact of ET, administered without chemotherapy, on PM using a virtual reality (VR)-based paradigm.
METHOD: Thirty-eight postmenopausal breast cancer survivors treated with ET (ET+) or without ET (ET-), and 21 healthy controls were evaluated. To is

OBJECTIVE: Disturbances in autobiographical memory have been reported in individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) but have not been examined in terms of differing severities of AUD.
METHOD: Fifty-six individuals with severe AUD, 39 individuals with mild AUD, and 56 controls performed an autobiographical memory task that involved recalling two important autobiographical memories over four life periods. Autobiographical memories were coded for specificity, emotional valence, theme, and meaning making.
RESULTS: Individuals with severe AUD recalled more general, more neutral, fewer positive,

OBJECTIVES: Early childhood autobiographical memories told by people with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) may provide insight into emotional, identity and interpersonal functioning deficits underlying the disorder. We aimed to analyse verbatim transcripts of these memories coded by the Core Conflictual Relationship Theme (CCRT) and Experiencing Scale (EXP).
DESIGN: This study employed a controlled, between-subjects study design.
METHODS: Sixty-four individuals (32 with diagnosed BPD and 32 age- and gender-matched controls) were interviewed to generate autobiographical memories using th

OBJECTIVE: Identifying factors that moderate cognitive outcomes following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is crucial. Prospective memory (PM) is a cognitive domain of interest in mTBI recovery as it may be especially sensitive to TBI-related changes. Since studies show that genetic status - particularly possession of the apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 allele - can modify PM performance, we investigated associations between mTBI status and APOE-ε4 genotype on PM performance in a well-characterized sample of Veterans with neurotrauma histories.
METHODS: 59 Veterans (mTBI = 33, Military Controls

Recalling autobiographical memories (AMs) is closely tied to emotional experience. However, the emotionality associated with an event can change from occurrence to recall. Autobiographical memories show fixed affect (i.e., no change in emotionality), fading affect (i.e., decrease in emotional intensity), flourishing affect (i.e., increase in emotional intensity), and flexible affect (i.e., change of valence). The present study used mixed-effects multinomial models to predict perceived changes in positive and negative valence as well as intensity. Initial intensity, vividness, and social rehear

OBJECTIVE: Anti-leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 limbic encephalitis (LGI1-LE) is a rare autoimmune condition that affects the structural integrity and functioning of the brain's limbic system. Little is known about its impact on long-term neuropsychological functioning and the structural integrity of the medial temporal lobe. Here we examined the long-term neuropsychological and neuroanatomical outcomes of a 68-year-old male who acquired LGI1-LE.
METHODS: Our case patient underwent standardized neuropsychological testing at two time points. Volumetric analyses of T1-weighted images were und
