Mapping of prostate cancer microvascular patterns using super-resolution ultrasound imaging.

BACKGROUND: Super-resolution ultrasound imaging (SRUI) is a rapidly expanding field with the potential to impact cancer management. Image processing algorithms applied to contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) video data can track the path of the contrast agent and produce high-resolution maps of vascular networks. Our aim was to develop SRUI for mapping prostate vascular dynamics and to assess the feasibility of identifying vascular patterns associated with prostate cancer. METHODS: Tracking algorithms for SRUI were developed using in silico data and validated in pre-clinical CEUS video collect

Spatial Atlas for Mapping Vascular Microcalcification Using 18F-NaF PET/CT: Application in Hyperphosphatemic Familial Tumoral Calcinosis.

BACKGROUND: Vascular calcification causes significant morbidity and occurs frequently in diseases of calcium/phosphate imbalance. Radiolabeled sodium fluoride positron emission tomography/computed tomography has emerged as a sensitive and specific method for detecting and quantifying active microcalcifications. We developed a novel technique to quantify and map total vasculature microcalcification to a common space, allowing simultaneous assessment of global disease burden and precise tracking of site-specific microcalcifications across time and individuals. METHODS: To develop this technique

Cognitive load reduces the effects of optic flow on gait and electrocortical dynamics during treadmill walking.

During navigation of complex environments, the brain must continuously adapt to both external demands, such as fluctuating sensory inputs, and internal demands, such as engagement in a cognitively demanding task. Previous studies have demonstrated changes in behavior and gait with increased sensory and cognitive load, but the underlying cortical mechanisms remain largely unknown. In the present study, in a mobile brain/body imaging (MoBI) approach, 16 young adults walked on a treadmill with high-density EEG while 3-dimensional (3D) motion capture tracked kinematics of the head and feet. Inferring Latent States and Refining Force Estimates via Hierarchical Dirichlet Process Modeling in Single Particle Tracking Experiments.

Understanding the basis for intracellular motion is critical as the field moves toward a deeper understanding of the relation between Brownian forces, molecular crowding, and anisotropic (or isotropic) energetic forcing. Effective forces and other parameters used to summarize molecular motion change over time in live cells due to latent state changes, e.g., changes induced by dynamic micro-environments, photobleaching, and other heterogeneity inherent in biological processes. This study discusses limitations in currently popular analysis methods (e.g., mean square displacement-based analyses)

Genotype diversity of Escherichia coli isolates in natural waters determined by PFGE and ERIC-PCR.

Most library-dependent bacterial source tracking studies using Escherichia coli (E. coli) have focused on strain diversity of isolates obtained from known human and animal faecal sources for library development. In contrast, this study evaluated the genotype variation of E. coli isolated from natural surface water using pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequence polymerase chain reaction (ERIC-PCR) to better understand these naturally occurring populations. A total of 650 water samples were collected over a nine month period from eleven

OPAL-Flow: Orientation-aware rice panicle detection and minute-scale anthesis rhythm identification under field conditions.

Accurate timing of rice panicle anthesis is critical for quantifying sterility risk under heat and humidity, yet minute-scale field measurement remains challenging because anthesis is transient and spikelets are tiny and difficult to detect. To address this, we present OPAL-Flow, a pipeline that provides single-panicle anthesis start and peak times under field conditions, consisting of a detector for panicle detection and tracking, a super-resolution reconstruction model, and an event-time pinpointing model. For slender panicle detection and panicle pose normalization, YOLO-SnakePanNet was int

From lab to ocean: bridging swimming energetics and wild movements to understand red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) behavior in a tidal estuary.

Understanding how fish navigate complex natural environments requires bridging fine-scale biomechanics with ecological behavior. We investigated the volitional movement and energetics of wild red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) across laboratory, mesocosm and field settings. Using flow-respirometry, we quantified metabolic costs and swimming kinematics under ecologically relevant flow conditions shaped by bluff bodies mimicking mangrove roots and oyster mounds. Fish swimming in turbulent wakes exhibited reduced oxygen consumption and altered tailbeat dynamics, especially at high flow speeds. In a l

Effects of 3D-MOT with ultrasonic haptic feedback on cognitive and motor-cognitive performance.

This study examined the effectiveness of incorporating ultrasonic mid-air haptic feedback into a three-dimensional multiple object tracking (3D-MOT). A custom-built ultrasonic phased array generated mid-air tactile stimuli within an 8 × 8 × 10 cm region, synchronized with a Unity-based interactive training game involving dynamic ball-catching tasks. This work assigned 20 healthy adult volunteers to the experimental (with haptic feedback) or control (without haptic feedback) groups. In addition, we assessed the cognitive and motor-cognitive performance before and after the intervention using la

Associations of waterbirds with harvesting and ploughing events in rice fields: increasing foraging opportunities or just gathering for the feast?

Surges in food availability create localized intense foraging opportunities, often attracting multi-species consumer groups. Agricultural practices can trigger these surges, prompting bird associations. However, the strength and duration of associations and its drivers, remain unclear. This study examines waterbird association with harvesting and ploughing events in rice fields. The duration and magnitude of these associations were determined and three hypotheses addressed to explain them: (1) increased food availability, (2) enhanced foraging success and (3) reduced time allocated to vigilanc

Validating Field Methods to Estimate the Pelvic Tilt in Sprinting and the Relationship between Prior Hamstring Injury and the Pelvic Tilt in Elite Female Soccer Players.

An excessive pelvic tilt in the late swing phase of sprinting may be associated with an increased risk of hamstring injury. Nevertheless, research including female athletes is scarce. Furthermore, it is essential to validate simple on-field methods. This study consisted of two experiments. Experiment I assessed the validity of two 2-D video-based methods: i) the kick-back score calculated from thigh angles at the toe-off and the touchdown; and ii) the pelvic tilt estimated by a line connecting two markers on the pelvis. Twelve soccer players sprinted for 30 m, and 3-D motion capture data and 2

Novel Structure-Function Models for Estimating Retinal Ganglion Cell Count Using Pattern Electroretinography in Glaucoma Suspects.

Background/Objectives: The early detection of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) dysfunction is critical for timely intervention in glaucoma suspects (GSs). The combined structure-function index (CSFI), which uses visual field and optical coherence tomography (OCT) data to estimate RGC counts, may be of limited utility in GSs. This study evaluates whether steady-state pattern electroretinogram (ssPERG)-derived estimates better predict early structural changes in GSs. Methods: Fifty eyes from 25 glaucoma suspects underwent ssPERG and spectral-domain OCT. Estimated RGC counts (eRGCC) were calculated us

High-Resolution Microperimetry for Detecting Glaucomatous Damage: A Prospective Evaluation of Performance.

BACKGROUND: To compare the performance of high-resolution microperimetry testing against standard automated perimetry (SAP) for detecting glaucomatous damage seen on optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans. METHODS: 250 eyes from 200 individuals underwent high-resolution microperimetry testing of a hemifield using a stimulus pattern optimised to sample typical arcuate patterns of visual field loss in glaucoma. SAP was performed using a 24-2 stimulus pattern. The presence of glaucomatous damage in each hemifield was subsequently independently assessed by two graders based on a circumpapillary

Cave dogs around major urban areas threaten rabies elimination program.

BACKGROUND: In the city of Arequipa, Peru, the government has implemented control measures against dog rabies virus since the detection of its reintroduction in 2015. The city was previously considered free of animal reservoirs other than owned and stray dogs within its urban boundaries. However, multiple reports from peri-urban residents have suggested the presence of feral dogs living in caves on the city's outskirts. We aim to document the presence and dietary patterns of feral dogs adjacent to the city margins. METHODS: We conducted monthly field visits to four peri-urban localities in ea

A wearable alcohol biosensor: Exploring the accuracy of transdermal drinking detection.

BACKGROUND: Trace amounts of consumed alcohol are detectable within sweat and insensible perspiration. However, the relationship between ingested and transdermally emitted alcohol is complex, varying across environmental conditions and involving a degree of lag. As such, the feasibility of real-time drinking detection across diverse environments has been unclear. In the current research we revisit sensor performance using new tools, exploring the accuracy of a new generation of rapid-sampling transdermal biosensor for contemporaneous drinking detection across diverse environments via machine l

Substrate stiffness modulates extracellular vesicles' release in a triple-negative breast cancer model.

AIM: The microenvironment effect on the tumoral-derived Extracellular Vesicle release, which is of significant interest for biomedical applications, still represents a rather unexplored field. The aim of the present work is to investigate the interrelation between extracellular matrix (ECM) stiffness and the release of small EVs from cancer cells. Here, we focus on the interrelation between the ECM and small extracellular vesicles (sEVs), specifically investigating the unexplored aspect of the influence of ECM stiffness on the release of sEVs. METHODS: We used a well-studied metastatic Triple

Predicted reduction in transmission from deployment of ivermectin-treated birdfeeders for local control of West Nile virus.

Ivermectin (IVM)-treated birds provide the potential for targeted control of Culex mosquitoes to reduce West Nile virus (WNV) transmission. Ingestion of IVM increases mosquito mortality, which could reduce WNV transmission from birds to humans and in enzootic maintenance cycles affecting predominantly bird-feeding mosquitoes and from birds to humans. This strategy might also provide an alternative method for WNV control that is less hampered by insecticide resistance and the logistics of large-scale pesticide applications. Through a combination of field studies and modeling, we assessed the fe

Real-time whole-brain imaging of hemodynamics and oxygenation at micro-vessel resolution with ultrafast wide-field photoacoustic microscopy.

High-speed high-resolution imaging of the whole-brain hemodynamics is critically important to facilitating neurovascular research. High imaging speed and image quality are crucial to visualizing real-time hemodynamics in complex brain vascular networks, and tracking fast pathophysiological activities at the microvessel level, which will enable advances in current queries in neurovascular and brain metabolism research, including stroke, dementia, and acute brain injury. Further, real-time imaging of oxygen saturation of hemoglobin (sO2) can capture fast-paced oxygen delivery dynamics, which is

Neurobehavioral Differences of Valproate and Risperidone on MK-801 Inducing Acute Hyperlocomotion in Mice.

OBJECTIVE: The glutamate system plays a major role in the development of neuropsychiatric disorders such as addiction, epilepsy, dementia, and psychosis. MK-801 (dizocilpine), an uncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, could increase locomotor activity and stereotyped neurobehaviors mimicking schizophrenic-like features in the mouse model. The study would explore the neuropharmacological differences of risperidone and valproic acid on the MK-801-induced neurobehavioral changes. METHODS: The subjects were male C57BL/6J mice obtained from the National Laboratory Animal Ce
