Sixty two patients with refractory genital warts attending a VD-clinic were treated with CO2-laser. Residual warts or new wart formation was observed in 45 of them (72%), two weeks after operation, resulting in an immediate cure rate of 27%. The cure rate obtained was independent of location, duration, and previous treatment of warts. Reoperation with CO2-laser was performed in 12 patients, and all had remaining lesions two weeks after operation. It is concluded that a single CO2-laser treatment often is an insufficient procedure for eradication of disseminated refractory genital warts.

Condyloma acuminatum is a benign warty lesion, whose malignant change is rarely seen. A 69-year-old woman with a large vulvar condyloma acuminatum, which she had had for about 14 years, underwent a vulvectomy, and a malignant component to the lesion was found unexpectedly. The continuity from a benign to a malignant lesion was evident in the histopathologic examination. Infection with human papillomavirus type 6 was documented by DNA hybridization. The use of a one-step reverse dot blot hybridization with nonisotope DNA probe in this case was convenient and is recommended.

Focal acantholytic dyskeratosis (FAD) is considered an incidental histological finding of unknown etiology. It has been described in association with only few pathological conditions. To the best of our knowledge, we report the first case of focal acantholytic dyskeratosis occurring in condyloma acuminata.

The Authors report general experience with two cases of penis verrucous carcinoma. Such a neoplasia, slowly evolving and not infiltrating the surrounding tissues, needs deep biopsies for a correct diagnosis. Surgical excision of the tumor is the choice treatment at an early stage: at an advanced stage demolitive therapy consisting in a partial or total penectomy is necessary. Recent findings of frank malignant squamous cell carcinoma arising in verrucous carcinoma raise serious concerns on the use of conservative therapies.

The increasing incidence of genital warts has led to more public awareness of this infection and its possible sequelae. Currently available treatment remains unsatisfactory, and there is pressure to develop effective and convenient alternatives. Podophyllotoxin is standardised and stable, whereas podophyllin has a variable composition. In an open comparison of self applied podophyllotoxin 0.5% versus podophyllin 20% applied by a doctor to treat external penile warts, podophyllotoxin was more effective and gave quicker resolution than podophyllin. Side effects were similar for both preparations

To determine the incidence of penile condyloma in a group of high-risk men, we carried out colposcopy and biopsy of suspicious lesions in 51 men. All men were partners of women with condyloma. Of these men, 45 were found to have histologic evidence of condyloma, and only eight of these had grossly visible disease.

Condyloma acuminata seen in childhood is a disease not well recognized as a sign of child abuse. These viral lesions are often diagnosed and treated without regard to their venereal mode of transmission.
