[Diphallia: a case report].

BACKGROUND: The diphallia is a rare anatomic abnormality that occurs in 1 of 5 million births. The etiology is unknown and its appearance varies from a small accessory penis to complete duplication and it is associated with other urogenital, gastrointestinal, cardiac and musculoskeletal congenital malformations. Several classifications have been designed according to the anatomical characteristics and their study is complemented by ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging. Treatment should be early and individualized in order to achieve a satisfactory aesthetic and functional result. CLINICA

A family with hereditary congenital facial paresis and a brief review of the literature.

Hereditary congenital facial paresis is a rare syndrome of isolated facial nerve palsy causing facial asymmetry and ptosis. Most described cases follow an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. It differs from Moebius syndrome, which is usually sporadic and associated with the involvement of other cranial nerves, commonly the abducens nerve in addition to orofacial and limb malformations and defects of the musculoskeletal system. We present three patients from the same family with features of congenital hereditary facial paresis. Facial asymmetry and facial weakness were the most remarkabl

Asymmetric crying facies associated with congenital hypoparathyroidism and 22q11 deletion.

Asymmetric crying facies is caused by congenital hypoplasia or agenesis of the depressor anguli oris muscle. Associations of this facial defect with major congenital anomalies have been reported, most commonly in the cardiovascular system and less frequently involving the genitourinary, musculoskeletal, cervicofacial, respiratory, and rarely, the endocrine system. CATCH 22 is a medical acronym for cardiac defects, abnormal facies, thymic hypoplasia, cleft palate and hypocalcemia and a variable deletion on chromosome 22q11. The deletion within chromosme region of 22q11 may occur in patients wit

Comprehensive management of arthrogryposis multiplex congenita.

Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita syndrome, characterized by multiple congenital joint contractures, is a manifestation of a neurogenic or myopathic disorder of unknown etiology. An accurate diagnosis is critical in management strategy. Muscle biopsy is usually the most important diagnostic procedure. Once the diagnosis is established, a team approach to comprehensive care is instituted, and the child is assisted in achieving maximum cognitive, physical, and social development. Physicians, nurse clinicians, therapists, social workers, and others constitute the team and work in coordination to

Nuclear magnetic resonance technology for medical studies.

Nuclear magnetic resonance proton imaging provides anatomical definition of normal and abnormal tissues with a contrast and detection sensitivity superior to those of x-ray computed tomography in the human head and pelvis and parts of the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems. Recent improvements in technology should lead to advances in diagnostic imaging of the breast and regions of the abdomen. Selected-region nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of protons, carbon-13, and phosphorus-31 has developed into a basic science tool for in vivo studies on man and a unique tool for clinical

Heterotopic ossification in a patient with paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity following multiple trauma complicated with vitamin D deficiency: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (PSH) may occur in patients with traumatic brain injury. Heterotopic ossification (HO) has frequently been observed in patients with PSH and has been found to impair patients' recoveries. However, the pathophysiology of HO in patients with PSH remains unelucidated. Vitamin D deficiency is a common abnormality among critically ill patients and may be associated not only with musculoskeletal complications, but also with high morbidity and mortality. The association between vitamin D deficiency and HO in patients with PSH has not yet been evaluated

Comparison of sedation and general anesthesia protocols for 18F-FDG-PET/CT studies in dogs and cats: Musculoskeletal uptake and radiation dose to workers.

In veterinary medicine, PET/CT scans are generally performed with the patient under general anesthesia. The aim of this prospective crossover study was to compare the musculoskeletal uptake of 18F-FDG and radiation doses to workers during PET/CT studies of healthy dogs and cats between sedation and general anesthesia. Volume and maximal standard uptake values (SUVmax) values of abnormal 18F-FDG uptake in the skeletal musculature, presence of misregistration artifact, and radiation doses to workers for each PET/CT study were recorded. Sedation was associated with increased volume of 18F-FDG upt

Cancer- and Chemotherapy-Induced Musculoskeletal Degradation.

Mobility in advanced cancer patients is a major health care concern and is often lost in advanced metastatic cancers. Erosion of mobility is a major component in determining quality of life but also starts a process of loss of muscle and bone mass that further devastates patients. In addition, treatment options become limited in these advanced cancer patients. Loss of bone and muscle occurs concomitantly. Advanced cancers that are metastatic to bone often lead to bone loss (osteolytic lesions) but may also lead to abnormal deposition of new bone (osteoblastic lesions). However, in both cases t

Biomechanics of human movement and its clinical applications.

All life forms on earth, including humans, are constantly subjected to the universal force of gravitation, and thus to forces from within and surrounding the body. Through the study of the interaction of these forces and their effects, the form, function and motion of our bodies can be examined and the resulting knowledge applied to promote quality of life. Under gravity and other loads, and controlled by the nervous system, human movement is achieved through a complex and highly coordinated mechanical interaction between bones, muscles, ligaments and joints within the musculoskeletal system.
