Harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation. Council on Scientific Affairs.

Tanning for cosmetic purposes by sunbathing or by using artificial tanning devices is widespread. The hazards associated with exposure to ultraviolet radiation are of concern to the medical profession. Depending on the amount and form of the radiation, as well as on the skin type of the individual exposed, ultraviolet radiation causes erythema, sunburn, photodamage (photoaging), photocarcinogenesis, damage to the eyes, alteration of the immune system of the skin, and chemical hypersensitivity. Skin cancers most commonly produced by ultraviolet radiation are basal and squamous cell carcinomas.

Skin cancer in Greenland 1955-1974.

During the period from 1955 to 1974, a total of 23 cases of skin cancer in indigenous Greenlanders was diagnosed, 15 in males and eight in females. There were ten basal cell carcinomas, four squamous-cell carcinomas, five malignant melanomas of the skin, and four sarcomas. Eight of the ten basal cell carcinomas were located on the head, half of these on the eyelids. Three of the four squamous-cell carcinomas were found on the lower lip. The number of malignant melanomas in females and the number of remaining, nonmelanotic skin cancers in both males and females were significantly lower than exp

Sebaceous carcinoma with apocrine differentiation arising in a known case of basal cell carcinoma: A rare entity.

Sebaceous carcinoma is a ra malignant tumor of adnexal origin arising from sebaceous glands. It is most commonly seen arising from the eyelids and head and neck. It is predominantly seen in females with an average age of around 65 years. Apocrine differentiation in sebaceous carcinomas is rare but has been reported in the literature. Here, we present a case of sebaceous carcinoma with apocrine differentiation in a 62-year- old female who was a diagnosed case of basal cell carinoma.

Anatomic Locations of Procedurally Treated Keratinocyte Carcinomas in the US Medicare Population.

IMPORTANCE: Keratinocyte carcinomas are the most common cancers in the US. However, keratinocyte carcinomas are not included in US national cancer registries, and information on the anatomic locations of keratinocyte carcinomas is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the anatomic location of keratinocyte carcinomas in the US using a large claims data set. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We performed a cohort study using a deidentified, random sample of 4 999 999 fee-for-service Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 years or older (2009-2018). MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Proportion of procedurally

Line-field confocal optical coherence tomography in melanocytic and non-melanocytic skin tumors.

INTRODUCTION: Line-field confocal optical coherence tomography (LC-OCT) is a recently introduced, non-invasive skin imaging technique combining the technical advantages of reflectance confocal microscopy and conventional OCT in terms of isotropic resolution and in-tissue penetration. Several studies have been published so far about the use of LC-OCT in melanocytic and non-melanocytic skin tumors. The aim of this review was to summarize the currently available data on the use of LC-OCT for benign and malignant melanocytic and non-melanocytic skin tumors. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: We searched scien

Skin Cancer Associated With Chronic Leg Ulcers in the Population of Olmsted County, Minnesota.

Malignant skin tumors in the setting of chronic leg ulcers (CLUs) are often underdiagnosed which may contribute to treatment delay and poor outcomes. The aims of our study were to determine the incidence and clinical characteristics of skin cancers in leg ulcers in the Olmsted County population from 1995 to 2020. We used the Rochester Epidemiology Project (a collaboration between health care providers) infrastructure to describe this epidemiology, allowing "population-based" research. Electronic medical records of adult patients with International Classification of Diseases diagnosis codes for

Advances in Topical Treatments of Cutaneous Malignancies.

Surgical excision has been the preferred treatment for cutaneous malignancies, but can be affected by various considerations. Noninvasive, self-administered topical treatments represent an alternative option. The aim of this review was to evaluate and summarize evidence-based recommendations for topical treatments of basal cell carcinoma (BCC), cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC), in situ melanoma (MIS), and extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD). Studies were reviewed on PubMed. Included studies were summarized, assessed for biases, and assigned a level of evidence to develop treatment reco

Chemical Peels as Field Therapy for Actinic Keratoses: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Actinic keratoses (AKs) are a common premalignant cutaneous neoplasm and can progress to squamous cell carcinoma. A variety of treatment options are available for field therapy of diffuse AKs. OBJECTIVE: This review systematically analyzes the use of chemical peels for treatment of AKs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review of PubMed was performed searching from 1946 to March 2020 to identify the literature on chemical peels for AKs. RESULTS: Of the 151 articles identified, 5 met inclusion criteria for review. Four of the reviewed articles demonstrated the efficacy of chemi

The association between smoking and risk of skin cancer: a meta-analysis of cohort studies.

PURPOSE: The association between smoking and the risk of skin cancers has been studied without reaching consistent findings. This study aims to assess this association through an updated meta-analysis of cohort studies. METHODS: We retrieved cohort studies that investigated the temporal association between smoking and the risk of basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and malignant melanoma (MM). Pooled relative risks (RRs) and confidence intervals (CIs) of the included articles were calculated for current, former, and heavy smoking compared with never smoking. Publication

Malignant Transformation of Nonhealing Ulcer-Basal Cell Carcinoma.

We discuss the rare case of a 72-year-old female with a history of a nonhealing lower extremity ulcer that was biopsied, revealing malignant transformation to basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Although BCC is the most common malignancy worldwide, malignant transformation of nonhealing wounds is more often associated with squamous cell carcinoma. Current literature estimates the rate of BCC arising from venous stasis ulcer to occur between 1.5 and 15%. When diagnosed early, BCC can have cure rates of up to 95%. However, metastatic BCC has a median survival of roughly 8 months. We believe it is import

Vulvar malignancies: an interdisciplinary perspective.

Vulvar cancer represents the fourth most common gynecologic malignancy and is often encountered by the general Dermatologist or Gynecologist. Dermatooncologists and Gynecologic Oncologists share expertise in this field and the diagnosis and treatment should ideally be interdisciplinary. All subtypes are typically seen in the later decades of life, although all histologic subtypes have been described in women younger than 30 years. The diagnosis is often delayed. Exact mapping of biopsies is of high importance, as the location and distance from the midline guides the surgical approach depending

Through the looking glass: Basics and principles of reflectance confocal microscopy.

Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) offers high-resolution, noninvasive skin imaging and can help avoid obtaining unnecessary biopsy specimens. It can also increase efficiency in the surgical setting by helping to delineate tumor margins. Diagnostic criteria and several RCM algorithms have been published for the differentiation of benign and malignant neoplasms. We provide an overview of the basic principles of RCM, characteristic RCM features of normal skin and cutaneous neoplasms, and the limitations and future directions of RCM.

Diet in dermatology: Part I. Atopic dermatitis, acne, and nonmelanoma skin cancer.

Patients commonly inquire about dietary modifications as a means to prevent or manage skin disease. Answering these questions is often challenging, given the vast and conflicting evidence that exists on this topic. This 2-part continuing medical education article summarizes the evidence to date to enable physicians to answer patients' questions in an evidence-based manner. Part I includes atopic dermatitis, acne, and nonmelanoma skin cancer. The role of dietary supplementation, dietary exclusion, food allergy, maternal diet, and breastfeeding in the development and/or prevention of atopic derm

Comparative epidemiological study of non-melanoma skin cancer between Spanish and north and central European residents on the Costa del Sol.

BACKGROUND: Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the most common tumour in white people. The progressive increase of these malignancies in such populations as those found in Europe represents an important public health concern which it is presumed will have a great impact on healthcare costs. However, the lack of comparable epidemiological information between countries hinders the development of a common health policy. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic aspects of NMSC in the public health area of the western part of the Costa del Sol
