Small intestinal perforation secondary to metastasis from skin squamous cell carcinoma: A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Primary and metastatic carcinoma of the small intestine are rare. While most of these malignancies are adenocarcinomas, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the gastrointestinal tract is uncommon. We present a case report of a rare occurrence of skin SCC metastasizing to the ileum, highlighting diagnostic challenges and clinical implications. CASE PRESENTATION: An 83-year-old female had a history of cutaneous SCC excision in the right temporal region two years prior to the current emergency department visit, followed by metastatic recurrence in a right intra-parotid l

Radiotherapy of extraosseous nasopharyngeal chordoma: A case report and literature review.

Chordomas are slow-growing aggressive tumors that account for 1-4% of all bone tumors. The anatomical distribution of chordomas includes 50-60% in the sacrococcygeal region, 25-30% in the skull base and 15% in the mobile spine. Virchow was the first to describe and term these tumors as 'ecchordosis physaliphora' in 1857, and Muller established their notochordal origin in 1895. Extraosseous chordomas of the nasopharynx are very rare, and they exhibit similarities with other lesions of the nasopharynx, presenting as a soft tissue mass. Gross total resection combined with postoperative radiothera

Lymphatic Territories (Lymphosomes) in Swine: An Animal Model for Future Lymphatic Research.

BACKGROUND: The swine is a common preclinical large-animal model for medical research because of the resemblance of its tissue structures to those of humans. However, the lymphatic system in swine is poorly understood. The authors investigated the lymphatic system and defined territories (lymphosomes) in swine using the microinjection technique. METHODS: Six swine (two male and four female 17.5- to 50-kg Sus domesticus) were used. Real-time indocyanine green fluorescence lymphography was performed in four live swine. After the animals were killed, the authors injected a radiocontrast mixture

Transparotid approach for mandibular condylar neck and subcondylar fractures.

Mandibular condylar neck fractures and subcondylar fractures represent, respectively, 19-29% and 62-70% of all mandibular fractures; treatment involves some problems, common to both, concerning the choice of an adequate approach. Herewith, personal experience is reported related to the surgical treatment of some cases of mandibular condylar neck and subcondylar fractures by transparotid approaches with partial parotidectomy, removing the salivary tissue overlying the condylar neck and/or the subcondylar region. Over the last 5 years, we observed 22 fractures of the condylar neck and 10 fractur

Unilateral radiotherapy treatment for p16/human papillomavirus-positive squamous cell carcinoma of unknown primary in the head and neck.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The outcomes of unilateral radiotherapy treatment for patients with p16/HPV-positive squamous cell carcinomas of unknown primary (SCCUP) affecting cervical lymph nodes are under-reported. Compared to radiating large volumes of the pharyngeal axis (the more common approach), this is potentially a much less toxic treatment for a good prognosis group. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: We identified patients with SCCUP who were treated radically at our center and did not have parotid or isolated level IV or V nodal involvement. Dose distribution of intensity-modulated proton therapy with and without a multi-leaf collimator for the treatment of maxillary sinus cancer: a comparative effectiveness study.

BACKGROUND: Severe complications, such as eye damage and dysfunciton of salivary glands, have been reported after radiotherapy among patients with head and neck cancer. Complications such as visual impairment have also been reported after proton therapy with pencil beam scanning (PBS). In the case of PBS, collimation can sharpen the penumbra towards surrounding normal tissue in the low energy region of the proton beam. In the current study, we examined how much the dose to the normal tissue was reduced by when intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) was performed using a multi-leaf collimato

Deliverable proton conformal FLASH radiotherapy treatment planning for head and neck re-irradiation patients.

PURPOSE: Clinical translation of ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) delivery to harness potential FLASH effect requires a treatment planning system (TPS) to optimize and calculate dose and dose rate in patients. Proton conformal FLASH treatment aims to deliver pencil beam scanning (PBS) Bragg Peaks to the tumor region with UHDR. In this work, we conducted a treatment planning study for head and neck (H&N) re-irradiation patients using a research-version of a commercial TPS paired with conformal FLASH hardware integrated into a nozzle of a clinical cyclotron-based system. METHODS: Fifteen H&N patient

Physiological biodistribution of 18F-fluciclovine PET in the head: as a baseline for interpretation in patients with suspected glioma.

INTRODUCTION: Anti-1-amino-3-[18F] fluorocyclobutane-1-carboxylic acid (18F-fluciclovine; anti-3-[18F] FACBC) is an amino acid positron emission tomography (PET) tracer used for the evaluation of brain tumors in cases of suspected or diagnosed glioma. While its uptake characteristics in brain tumors have been reported, systematic data on background uptake in normal-appearing head tissues including extracranial structures remain limited. The purpose of this study was to characterize the background uptake of 18F-fluciclovine in intracranial and extracranial head tissues in patients with suspecte

Validation of quantitative magnetic resonance imaging techniques in head and neck healthy structures involved in the salivary and swallowing function: Accuracy and repeatability.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Radiation-induced damage to the organs at risk (OARs) in head-and-neck cancer (HNC) patient can result in long-term complications. Quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (qMRI) techniques such as diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), DIXON for fat fraction (FF) estimation and T2 mapping could potentially provide a spatial assessment of such damage. The goal of this study is to validate these qMRI techniques in terms of accuracy in phantoms and repeatability in-vivo across a broad selection of healthy OARs in the HN region. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Scanning was performed at
