In vivo effects of cold therapy and bandaging on core temperatures of equine superficial and deep digital flexor tendons.

OBJECTIVE: To compare core temperatures of superficial and deep digital flexor tendons (SDFT, DDFT) during application of a compression cooling system versus ice boots and during subsequent lower limb bandaging. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental study. ANIMALS: Paired forelimbs of six sedated horses. METHODS: Thermocouples were placed in the core of SDFT and DDFT of both front limbs of each horse. A compression cooling system was applied to one front limb and an ice boot was applied to the other front limb for 60 min and then removed for 60 min. Standing bandages were then applied to both front li

Minimally invasive iliosacral sentinel lymph node mapping and extirpation: A canine cadaveric study.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and describe a minimally invasive surgical (MIS) approach to access, identify, and extirpate lymph nodes within the iliosacral lymph node center following sentinel lymph node mapping (SLNM). STUDY DESIGN: Experimental canine cadaveric study. ANIMALS: Six canine cadavers. METHODS: Preoperative computed tomography (CT) with indirect CT-lymphography (CTL) was followed by MIS SLNM utilizing a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent dye with iliosacral nodal dissection and extirpation. Each cadaver was positioned in supported sternal recumbency for all procedures. Ports were placed

A combination of pre- and intraoperative techniques identifies sentinel lymph nodes in dogs with thyroid carcinoma: A pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop and describe pre- and intra-operative sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping techniques in dogs with thyroid carcinoma. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective, pilot clinical trial was performed. ANIMALS: Six client-owned dogs with unilateral thyroid carcinoma and no overtly metastatic locoregional lymph nodes (LNs) were enrolled. METHODS: All dogs underwent preoperative indirect computed tomography (CT)-lymphography (CTL) with peritumoral iohexol injection and intraoperative SLN mapping with peritumoral injection of a visible dye (methylene blue [MB]) and ne

An ex vivo comparison of jejunal transection angles and the effect on lumen diameter following end-to-end jejunojejunal anastomoses.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate three different jejunal transection angles for end-to-end jejunojejunostomies, comparing construction time, lumen size, and suture number. STUDY DESIGN: Ex vivo cadaver study. SAMPLE POPULATION: Eight euthanized horses each had three mid-jejunal specimens harvested. METHODS: Jejunal segments were assigned to one of three groups (A30, A45, and A60) and transected at 30, 45, or 60°, respectively. Following transection, a standardized handsewn single-layer interrupted modified Lembert anastomosis was performed, and construction time and number of sutures placed were reco

Effect of suture anchor type, eyelet configuration, and loading condition on suture failure: An in vitro study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of suture anchor type, eyelet configuration (raised or embedded), and loading condition (without or with cyclic loading) on failure load and failure mode of sutures in anchors with embedded and raised eyelets. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. SAMPLE POPULATION: A total of 4 unique clinical anchor+suture combinations (n = 40 total); eyebolt screw reference samples (n = 30 total). METHODS: A total of 10 samples of each anchor+suture combination were either (a) loaded to failure (n = 5) or (b) loaded from 0 N to 60 N for 1000 cycles then loaded to f

Biomechanical testing of three constructs for prosthetic laryngoplasty in horses demonstrates advantages of differing metallic implants in the arytenoid cartilage.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the biomechanical stability of a novel arytenoid implant (tie-bolt, TB) with a suture anchor (SA) and standard laryngoplasty using suture alone (control) in equine larynges. STUDY DESIGN: Randomized ex vivo controlled experimental study. SAMPLE POPULATION: Thirty equine cadaver larynges. METHODS: Larynges were randomly assigned to TB, SA, or control groups (n = 10 each). The force of abduction was measured for each construct, then constructs underwent cyclic loading (5-50 N for 3000 cycles) to assess elongation, followed by load-to-failure testing to assess ultimate lo

OBJECTIVE: To develop a modified stapled (MS) jejunocecostomy (JC) in healthy horses. STUDY DESIGN: In vivo experimental study. ANIMALS: Six healthy adult horses underwent ventral midline celiotomy, a jejunal resection, and an MS. METHODS: Time to complete anastomosis and anastomotic length at necropsy were recorded. Horses were assessed by physical examination every 6 h for 5 days after surgery, then once daily until euthanasia at 7 days. A group of seven horses that had a stapled side-to-side JC and were euthanized 28 days postoperatively was used as an historical control (SS). RESULTS:

Diagnosis and surgical management of septic peritonitis in small animals: A review.

BACKGROUND: Septic peritonitis (SP) is a complex disease with significant morbidity and mortality. Diagnosis can be challenging, and lack of a timely diagnosis may impact survival. AIM: The aim of this review was to synthesize current knowledge on the diagnosis and surgical management of SP in dogs and cats. CONCLUSIONS: Recent studies suggest refinements of previously reported clinicopathologic criteria improve diagnostic and prognostic accuracy. When evaluating blood-effusion glucose differences, clinicians should be aware of the confounding effects of point of care glucometers. Cytology s
