Lévy statistics define anxiety and depression in mice subjected to chronic stress.

INTRODUCTION: Current rodent models for anxiety and depression assessment face methodological challenges compromising both scientific rigor and animal welfare. METHODS: This study introduced a novel approach using the Lévy flight (LF) statistical method to analyze spontaneous movement in open spaces. We employed three models: Chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS), Electric shock stress (ES), and Chronic Restraint Stress (CRS)-utilizing a total of 540 mice for LF fitting. A support vector machine algorithm was applied to distinguish each model group based on the two-dimensional distribution

Machine learning identifies fatigue as a key symptom of fibromyalgia reflected in tyrosine, purine, pyrimidine, and glutaminergic metabolism.

Fibromyalgia patients vary in clinical phenotype and treatment can be challenging. The pathophysiology of fibromyalgia is incompletely understood but appears to involve metabolic changes at rest or in response to stress. We enrolled 54 fibromyalgia patients and 31 healthy controls to this prospective study. Symptoms were assessed using the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) and blood samples were collected for metabolomics analysis at baseline and after an oral glucose tolerance test and a cardiopulmonary exercise test. We identified key symptoms of fibromyalgia and related them to change

Identification of TGF-β-related genes in cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure based on single cell RNA sequencing.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) remains a huge medical burden worldwide. Pathological cardiac hypertrophy is one of the most significant phenotypes of HF. Several studies have reported that the TGF-β pathway plays a double-sided role in HF. Therefore, TGF-β-related genes (TRGs) may be potential therapeutic targets for cardiac hypertrophy and HF. However, the roles of TRGs in HF at the single-cell level remain unclear. METHOD: In this study, to analyze the expression pattern of TRGs during the progress of cardiac hypertrophy and HF, we used three public single-cell RNA sequencing datasets for H

Deficient dynamics of prefrontal-striatal and striatal-default mode network (DMN) neural circuits in internet gaming disorder.

BACKGROUND: Studies have proven that individuals with internet gaming disorder (IGD) show impaired cognitive control over game craving; however, the neural mechanism underlying this process remains unclear. Accordingly, the present study aimed to investigate the dynamic features of brain functional networks of individuals with IGD during rest, which have barely been understood until now. METHODS: Resting-state fMRI data were collected from 333 subjects (123 subjects with IGD (males/females: 73/50) and 210 healthy controls (males/females: 135/75)). First, the data-driven methodology, named co-

Early detection of female-specific cancers using longitudinal healthcare records with a multichannel convolutional neural network.

OBJECTIVES: Female-specific cancers, including breast, ovarian, cervical and uterine malignancies, lack comprehensive early detection approaches, particularly for ovarian and endometrial cancers where effective population-level screening remains limited. This study aimed to develop and validate a computational method for early detection of female-specific cancers using longitudinal healthcare records. METHODS: We developed a multichannel convolutional neural network (MCNN) to analyse 36-month pre-diagnostic healthcare records from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. The stud

Optical biosensors for cancer diagnosis and monitoring.

Cancer is driven by complex genetic and epigenetic alterations that promote uncontrolled cellular proliferation, invasion, and metastasis. Despite substantial advances in oncology, conventional diagnostic approaches remain constrained by invasiveness, cost, limited sensitivity, and limited capacity to detect malignancies at early stages. Optical biosensors have emerged as promising platforms for sensitive, rapid, and non- or minimally invasive cancer biomarker detection, offering opportunities for real-time, label-free analysis of biofluids. These systems integrate highly selective biorecognit

Multi-Scale Temporal Analysis With a Dual-Branch Attention Network for Interpretable Gait-Based Classification of Neurodegenerative Diseases.

The accurate diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs), such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Huntington's Disease (HD), and Parkinson's Disease (PD), remains a clinical challenge due to the complexity and subtlety of gait abnormalities. This paper proposes the Dual-Branch Attention-Enhanced Residual Network (DAERN), a novel deep learning architecture that integrates Dilated Causal Convolutions (DCCBlock) for local gait pattern extraction and Multi-Head Self-Attention (MHSA) for long-range dependency modeling. A Cross-Attention Fusion module enhances feature integration, while SHap

REM Sleep Abnormalities in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Sleep disturbances are common in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, the sleep pattern changes including rapid eye movement (REM) sleep for ASD in pediatric populations remain unknown. Using polysomnography (PSG) data from the National Children's Hospital (NCH) Sleep Databank, we identified 193 children with ASD and matched them with 193 Non-ASD controls. We found children with ASD showed reduced REM sleep proportion (17.8% ± 6.4% vs. 19.1% ± 7.0%; p = 0.049) and duration (71.5 [49.5-91.0] min vs. 81.5 [52.5-98.0] min; p = 0.036), prolonged REM latency (134.5 [94.0-181.5] mi

Alterations in neural circuit dynamics between the limbic network and prefrontal/default mode network in patients with generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Widespread functional alterations have been implicated in patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). However, most studies have primarily focused on static brain network features in patients with GAD. The current research focused on exploring the dynamics within functional brain networks among individuals diagnosed with GAD. METHODS: Seventy-five participants were divided into patients with GAD and healthy controls (HCs), and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected. The severity of symptoms was measured using the Hamilton Anxiety Scale and th

Classification of Alzheimer's Disease, Mild Cognitive Impairment, and Normal Controls With Subnetwork Selection and Graph Kernel Principal Component Analysis Based on Minimum Spanning Tree Brain Functional Network.

Effective and accurate diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), as well as its early stage (mild cognitive impairment, MCI), has attracted more and more attention recently. Researchers have constructed threshold brain function networks and extracted various features for the classification of brain diseases. However, in the construction of the brain function network, the selection of threshold is very important, and the unreasonable setting will seriously affect the final classification results. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose a minimum spanning tree (MST) classification framewor

Discovering non-linear dynamics of miRNAs in Alzheimer's disease-related cognitive impairment: a cross-species approach with explainable machine learning.

BACKGROUND: MicroRNA (miRNA) biomarker studies in Alzheimer's disease (AD) typically assume monotonic relationships between expression levels and disease status, overlooking the non-linear, context-dependent nature of miRNA regulatory networks. This simplification limits mechanistic insight and clinical translation. We aimed to characterise non-linear contribution patterns of miRNAs across the AD continuum using explainable machine learning and to define stage-specific "operating windows" where individual miRNAs drive classification. METHODS: Candidate miRNAs were prioritised from APPtg/TAUtg

BrainAuth: A Neuro-Biometric Approach for Personal Authentication.

The literature repeatedly reports that the unique nature of individual brainwave patterns makes them suitable for identification and authentication, because they are difficult to replicate or forge. Therefore, many researchers have utilized brainwaves for authentication by training traditional deep learning and machine learning models. However, the internal decision processes of these black-box models have not been evaluated in terms of biases, overfitting, large training data requirements, and handling complex data structures, which keep them in a fuzzy state. To address these limitations, a

Resting-state fMRI analysis of functional connectivity and temporal dynamics differences between cocaine users and healthy controls.

Understanding alterations in functional connectivity among individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) is critical for elucidating the neural mechanisms underlying addiction. In this study, we applied Energy Landscape Analysis (ELA), an energy-based machine learning method, to examine whole-brain functional connectivity differences between SUD patients and healthy controls (HCs). A key methodological challenge in ELA lies in the selection of appropriate Regions of Interest (ROIs) from comprehensive brain atlases. To address this, we employed seed-based connectivity analysis to identify task-

Splicing complexity as a pivotal feature of alternative exons in mammalian species.

BACKGROUND: As a significant process of post-transcriptional gene expression regulation in eukaryotic cells, alternative splicing (AS) of exons greatly contributes to the complexity of the transcriptome and indirectly enriches the protein repertoires. A large number of studies have focused on the splicing inclusion of alternative exons and have revealed the roles of AS in organ development and maturation. Notably, AS takes place through a change in the relative abundance of the transcript isoforms produced by a single gene, meaning that exons can have complex splicing patterns. However, the co
