Adherence to optimal delirium management practices in intensive care units in Brazil: a nationwide survey.

BACKGROUND: Effective delirium management is crucial, considering its association with adverse outcomes. Adherence to best practices has the potential to reduce the incidence and prevalence of delirium and improve health outcomes. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this project were to describe self-assessed adherence to best practices in delirium management by health care professionals in intensive care units (ICUs) in Brazil, assess the health care professionals' perception of the importance of adequate delirium prevention and treatment in ICUs, and compare the compliance rates with best practic

Community drivers of tuberculosis diagnostic delay in Kampala, Uganda: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Recent approaches to TB control have focused on identifying and treating active cases to halt further transmission. Patients with TB symptoms often delay to seek care, get appropriate diagnosis, and initiate effective treatment. These delays are partly influenced by whom the patients contact within their community network. We aimed to evaluate the community drivers of diagnostic delay in an urban setting in Uganda. METHODS: In this study we analyze data from a retrospective cohort of 194 TB patients in Kampala, Uganda. We characterized the patterns of contacts made by patients see

Survey of knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding reproductive health among urban men in China: a descriptive study.

There has been little focus on men's reproductive health (RH) in China. This descriptive study conducted in Yiling District, Yichang, China, surveyed male knowledge of sexual physiology and RH to assess levels of knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAPs) regarding prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). A total of 3933 men, aged 18-59 years (mean, 40.3 years), were recruited by cluster random sampling. They completed a questionnaire in the presence of an interviewer, with items related to subject characteristics, RH knowledge, and subjective symptoms of the reproductive system. Phy

Tetracyclines in the Modern Era: Global Consumption, Antimicrobial Resistance, Environmental Occurrence, and Degradation Techniques.

Tetracyclines are among the oldest classes of antibiotics, with broad activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as Chlamydia, Legionella, Rickettsia, and Mycoplasma species. Widely used in human and veterinary medicine, agriculture, and aquaculture, they represent approximately 10-12% of the global antimicrobial market. Extensive use has driven the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance, posing ecological and public health risks. However, the full extent of these risks remains unclear due to limited data on tetracycline consumption, environmental occurrence,

Human leptospirosis as a doubly neglected disease in Brazil.

The aim of this article is to analyze discrepancies and informational gaps which produce a doubly neglected version of human leptospirosis in the Brazilian public health policy. To achieve this goal, we compared data on morbidity, mortality, hospital and social costs, population profiles, vector habits, social health determinants and diagnostic practices related to leptospirosis with another disease of higher recognition in Brazil: dengue fever. Our analysis shows that the arbitrariness of criteria for assigning health priorities, the invisibility of the population profile of human leptospiros

On misconceptions about the Brier score in binary prediction models.

The Brier score is a widely used metric in epidemiological and clinical research for evaluating the accuracy of probabilistic predictions for binary outcomes, such as disease occurrence, treatment response, and screening performance. Despite its popularity, the Brier score is frequently misunderstood, leading to flawed interpretation of prediction models and potentially misguided public health and clinical decisions. This study aims to didactically clarify common misconceptions about realised Brier scores and to provide practical, statistically rigorous guidance for its correct interpretation

Gender-related factors affecting community malaria-related perceptions and practices in Migori County, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Malaria poses a significant global public health challenge yet there remains limited information on the influence of gender dynamics on malaria programmes despite the well-known gender-specific differentials in the prevalence, transmission and exposure to malaria. The 2024 World Malaria Report indicates that the burden of malaria and the challenges in addressing it remain severe in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), with eleven countries including Kenya bearing almost two-thirds of the global disease burden. Kenya remains heavily affected, with around 70% of the population at risk. The aim

System mapping to strengthen youth crisis response: findings from a multi-county California pilot.

Youth suicide is a pressing public health concern requiring coordinated, cross-sector responses. This research presents findings from a pilot initiative involving ten California counties that used a multi-site participatory system mapping design to assess and strengthen youth crisis reporting and response systems. Funded through the Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative and supported by the California Department of Public Health, the pilot used visual tools to identify gaps, clarify roles, and promote shared understanding across sectors. System maps focused on six key components of c

Applying principles of injury and infectious disease control to the opioid mortality epidemic in North America: critical intervention gaps.

North America has been experiencing an acute and unprecedented public health crisis involving excessive and increasing levels of opioid-related overdose mortality. In the present commentary, we examine current interventions (as existent mainly in Canada) to date and compare them against established intervention frameworks and practices in other areas of public health, specifically injury and infectious disease control. We observe that current interventions focusing on opioid drug safety or exposure-specifically those that focus on distinctly potent and toxic opioid products driving major incre

A Public Health Research Agenda for Managing Infodemics: Methods and Results of the First WHO Infodemiology Conference.

BACKGROUND: An infodemic is an overflow of information of varying quality that surges across digital and physical environments during an acute public health event. It leads to confusion, risk-taking, and behaviors that can harm health and lead to erosion of trust in health authorities and public health responses. Owing to the global scale and high stakes of the health emergency, responding to the infodemic related to the pandemic is particularly urgent. Building on diverse research disciplines and expanding the discipline of infodemiology, more evidence-based interventions are needed to design

[(Chemo-)Preventive strategies for skin cancer: current state of knowledge and implications for daily practice].

In view of rising incidence rates worldwide, the prevention of skin cancer is a central pillar of public health. While UV protection forms the basis of primary prevention, pharmacological strategies (chemoprevention) are becoming increasingly important. This paper provides a practice-oriented synthesis of current evidence, ranging from behavioural prevention and systemic approaches with nicotinamide and retinoids to experimental strategies such as immune checkpoint inhibitors and DNA repair enzymes.

Fuzzy-set qualitative analysis in public health: an illustrative application to social determinants of health in Dundee, Aberdeen and Glasgow.

Public health outcomes are affected by multiple, intersecting social determinants, yet dominant regression-based approaches often struggle to analyse such causal complexity. This paper illustrates the value of fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) as a viable method for public health research by applying it to the social determinants of health in Aberdeen, Dundee and Glasgow, which we use as illustrative examples for teaching the utility of fsQCA. Using indicator-level Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation data, we demonstrate how fsQCA identifies necessary conditions and multipl

Protective behavior survey, West Nile virus, British Columbia.

We investigated personal protective behaviors against West Nile virus infection. Barriers to adopting these behaviors were identified, including the perception that DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide and related compounds) is a health and environmental hazard. Televised public health messages and knowing that family or friends practiced protective behaviors were important cues to action.

Delayed cord clamping practice at birth: A narrative review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Anaemia in infants is a major public health concern particularly in low and middle-income countries. Delayed cord clamping (DCC) has been advocated as a strategy to decrease iron deficiency anaemia in infants because of the benefits that come with placental transfusion. Despite the documented benefits of delayed cord clamping in preventing anaemia the current practices of delayed cord clamping by midwives and obstetricians across countries and in different contexts is unclear. This narrative review assesses the literature on delayed cord clamping practices published from 2013 to Fe

Patient and public involvement in health and social care doctoral research: recommendations co-produced by doctoral researchers, public contributors, and a public involvement coordinator.

BACKGROUND: Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) is a continually growing component of health and social care research in the UK and internationally, ensuring that research is conducted with and by the public rather than simply about them. Doctoral research represents a critical opportunity to embed meaningful PPI early in researchers' careers, yet practical recommendations tailored to this context remain limited. Existing studies often focus on individual case reflections or programme-level evaluations, with few capturing the collective experiences of doctoral researchers, PPI contributors, a
