[Application of robots in the upper limb physiotherapy of patients with hemiparesis].

OBJECTIVE: Authors describe the robotic physiotherapy system developed in the scope of Reharob project belonging to the 5th Framework Programme of the European Union. The system is able to execute robot mediated physiotherapy of the shoulder and the elbow of patients with spastic hemiparesis. Due to the fact, that spasticity is velocity dependent, it is important to execute the exercises with a relatively slow and constant velocity. In such cases a robot can support the work of the physiotherapist first of all when delivering exercises with high repetition number. The objective of the first cl

Early experience in robot-assisted laparoscopic Heller myotomy.

Heller myotomy for achalasia is routinely performed laparoscopically. This offers patients significant benefits compared to open surgery. Surgeons, however, are limited in their manipulation and visualization during laparoscopic interventions. Robotic telemanipulation systems were introduced with the objective of alleviating these limitations. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the efficacy and safety of performing a Heller myotomy with the use of a robotic telemanipulation system. Fourteen patients were operated on with the da Vinci robot system. Robotic system set-up time, per- and

Development of a finger printing device for use on a mobile robot.

In this paper, we describe the development of a device for fuming fingerprints with cyanoacrylate (Super Glue) to enable police tactical units to obtain fingerprint evidence from suspicious packages using a remote-controlled robot. Through a series of initial experiments and preliminary designs, we show that effective cyanoacylate fuming requires sufficient heat, humidity, and airflow. This work led to the development of a final working prototype, called robot accessory for fuming fingerprint evidence (RAFFE), which is currently being field tested by the Calgary Police Service.

Habitat-Specific Design Strategies for Untethered Soft Robots.

Untethered soft robots are governed by habitat-specific constraints because operation without physical tethers requires their compliant structures, actuation mechanisms, and energy-delivery pathways to remain compatible with the environment. Adopting a habitat-centric framework, this review compares untethered soft robots across terrestrial, aquatic, aerial, and in vivo environments. On terrestrial substrates, design strategies are shaped by locomotion-specific demands, including contact modulation in crawling, energy storage and release in jumping, switchable adhesion in climbing, and granula

Laser Speckle Velocimeter for Mobile Industrial Robot Odometry.

This paper reports the design and construction of a laser speckle velocimeter for application to mobile industrial robots. It is intended to supplement the typically used simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM) approach by providing enhanced odometry that unlike wheel encoders is unaffected by wheel slippage and will improve navigation in feature-sparse or varying environments. The sensor was installed on an industrial mobile robot (MIR200) and performance trials conducted in a manufacturing environment. We report a novel signal processing scheme that was developed for reliable operation

Robotic-assisted beating heart surgery: a comprehensive review.

Robotic-assisted minimally invasive cardiac surgery offers the potential to perform off-pump beating heart procedures without cardiopulmonary bypass, but active closed-loop algorithmic motion compensation, as distinct from image-stabilization, motion-tracking, and mechanical-stabilization approaches that have seen limited clinical use, has not yet entered human clinical trials despite two decades of research. This scoping review, conducted using the PRISMA-ScR framework, addresses three questions: what are the quantitative performance limits of current sensing, prediction, and control methods;

Agile perceptive multiskill locomotion for quadrupedal robots in the wild.

Enabling quadrupedal robots to traverse complex terrains, from rugged outdoor environments to urban landscapes, requires seamless integration of multiple motor skills, smooth transitions between gaits, and high-speed perceptive locomotion using only onboard sensors. We present APT-RL (action pretrained transformer-based reinforcement learning), a unified framework that enables multiskill locomotion to achieve high-speed traversal in complex environments through autonomous skill transitions using only onboard perception and computation. Our approach generates large-scale, feature-rich two-dimen
