BACKGROUNDS: The completeness of cytoreduction is one of the most important prognostic factors for patients with pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP). To date, no nomograms have been established to predict incomplete cytoreduction (IC) for patients with PMP. The current study therefore proposed a nomogram to predict individual IC risk for PMP patients.
METHODS: Between 1 June 2013, and 22 November 2019, 144 consecutive PMP patients who underwent cytoreductive surgery (CRS) combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for the first time in our center were included in a retrospective

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma historically carried a grim prognosis, but outcomes have improved substantially in recent decades. The prognostic significance of clinical, morphologic, and immunophenotypic features remains ill-defined. This multi-institutional cohort comprises 225 malignant peritoneal mesotheliomas, which were assessed for 21 clinical, morphologic, and immunohistochemical parameters. For epithelioid mesotheliomas, combining nuclear pleomorphism and mitotic index yielded a composite nuclear grade, using a previously standardized grading system. Correlation of clinical, morpho

BACKGROUND: Multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma (MCPM) is an extremely rare disease with 40-50% rate of recurrence after surgical debulking. Due to the recurrent nature of the disease, the option of cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) was offered for this condition. In the present study we aimed to describe the outcomes of this strategy in a single center cohort.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed a prospectively collected database of all patients with MCPM that underwent the combined procedure in our center. Clinical presentation, operative

INTRODUCTION: In selected cases, cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is an established treatment for patients suffering from peritoneal metastases from colorectal, ovarian, gastric or appendiceal origin. The effectiveness of this extensive has not been elucidated within other rare diseases by now.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients treated with CRS for peritoneal carcinomatosis during the period between July 2010 and September 2015. Exclusion criteria were adenocarcinomas of the stomach, colon, neoplasms of the appendix, me

Peritoneal dissemination is diagnosed in 10-25 % of colorectal cancer patients. Selected patients are treated with cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. For these patients, earlier diagnosis, optimised selection criteria and a personalised approach are warranted. Biomarkers could play a crucial role here. However, little is known about possible candidates. Considering tumour cell adhesion as a key step in peritoneal dissemination, we aim to provide an overview of the functional importance of adhesion molecules in peritoneal dissemination and discuss the prognosti

INTRODUCTION: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is one of the most important angiogenic factors in solid tumours and plays an important role in ascites development in peritoneal surface malignancies (PSM). The main goal of this study was to determine the evolution and factors influencing intraperitoneal (IP) VEGF burden during cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with curative intent.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ninety-seven consecutive patients with PSM were treated with CRS at a single centre with curative intent. Patient data were collected prospectively between February 2012 and October 2012. An

BACKGROUND: In colorectal cancer, complete cytoreductive surgery associated with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy achieves encouraging results in early peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC), but this early detection can only be accurately accomplished during a systematic second-look surgery. This costly and invasive approach can only be proposed to selected patients. The objective of this study was to identify risk factors predictive of developing PC after curative surgery for colorectal cancer.
METHODS: After a systematic review of the literature published between 1940 and 2011, all clinic

BACKGROUND: Current literature on quality of life (QOL) after cytoreductive surgery and heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC) demonstrates that most patients have a temporary decline in QOL with a return to baseline 3-12 months postoperatively. This qualitative study aimed to explore patient perceptions of QOL and to understand how adaptation influences their experiences.
METHODS: The study involved 1 h semi-structured interviews with patients who underwent CRS/HIPEC for non-low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm lower gastrointestinal (GI) pathology from May 2023 to March 2024. Th

INTRODUCTION: Diffusion-weighted MRI (DW-MRI) is a promising tool for selecting patients with colorectal peritoneal metastases for cytoreductive surgery (CRS). This study investigated whether surgeons can predict the extent of CRS based on preoperative MRI findings.
METHODS: This single-centre retrospective study included patients who underwent CRS-HIPEC after preoperative MRI. An expert abdominal radiologist showed MR images to three experienced surgeons, who independently predicted the probability of achieving a complete resection by scoring which of 29 anatomical structures would be resect

BACKGROUND: Repeat cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) (rCRS-HIPEC) has improved the long-term survival of select patients with acceptable perioperative morbidity and mortality. The pattern of peritoneal disease recurrence is critical in determining eligibility for rCRS-HIPEC. This study evaluated the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of the radiological peritoneal cancer index (PCI) across different imaging modalities in rCRS-HIPEC patients.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study on patients with peritoneal disease recurrence who underwent r

BACKGROUND: PMP is a rare clinical syndrome characterized by the accumulation of mucinous material in the peritoneal cavity. The combination of CRS and HIPEC is the standard treatment, known to improve survival outcomes. However, follow-up adherence is critical for early detection of recurrence and extending survival. This study is the first to specifically investigate postoperative follow-up adherence in PMP patients treated with CRS and HIPEC.
AIMS: To explore the socio-demographic and clinical determinants of follow-up adherence and its impact on survival in PMP patients treated with CRS a

BACKGROUND: Cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS-HIPEC) is technically complex and resource-intensive. The primary objective of this study was to perform a detailed micro-costing analysis of CRS-HIPEC. As a secondary, exploratory objective, we evaluated whether adherence to an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) pathway was associated with differences in postoperative resource utilisation and direct hospital costs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective observational analysis was conducted on all consecutive CRS-HIPEC procedures performed from 2021 to 2

Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is associated with improved survival in recurrent ovarian cancer (ROC) but carries a high risk of postoperative complications. Accurate perioperative risk stratification remains an unmet need. To develop and internally validate a perioperative risk model for postoperative complications in ROC patients using information available by the end of surgery (pre- and intra-operative data), and to compare logistic regression (LR) and artificial neural networks (ANN) as possible predictive models. BACKGROUND: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are a common cause of morbidity after cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for peritoneal malignancy. Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) has been proposed as a method to reduce the rates of SSIs; however, there is paucity in the literature on the efficacy in this population. The goal of this study was to determine whether routine use of NPWT in patients undergoing CRS/HIPEC could reduce the risk of developing SSI.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective before-after study to assess the rates of SSI with

BACKGROUND/AIM: Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare condition characterized by diffuse spread of mucinous tumors within the peritoneal cavity. Traditional treatment modalities, such as cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) are challenging in cases of recurrent disease, owing to anatomical complexities and increasing morbidity and mortality risk. BromAc® has emerged as a novel, targeted therapy for PMP with evidence for intra-tumoral administration to break down mucin deposits.
