Corneal refractive power and symmetry changes following normalization of ectasias treated with partial topography-guided PTK combined with higher-fluence CXL (the Athens Protocol).

PURPOSE: To investigate preoperative and postoperative anterior and posterior keratometry and simulated corneal astigmatism in keratoconic eyes treated with collagen cross-linking combined with anterior surface normalization by partial topography-guided excimer ablation (the Athens Protocol). METHODS: Anterior and posterior corneal keratometry were measured by Scheimpflug imaging for 267 untreated keratoconic eyes. Following treatment, they were assessed 1 year postoperatively. RESULTS: Before treatment, average anterior keratometric value was 47.06 ± 6.02 diopters (D) for flat and 51.24 ± 6

DESIGN: In vitro laboratory investigation. PARTICIPANTS: One hundred five eyes from 105 patients scheduled for refractive surgery at Balgensesang Ophthalmology Clinic between September 2005 and January 2006 were studied. Corneal ulceration and perforation with ketorolac tromethamine (Acular) use after PRK.

PURPOSE: To report a case of corneal ulceration and perforation after PRK connected with high doses of ketorolac tromethamine (Acula). METHODS: A 31-year-old man presented 5 days after PRK in the left eye with corneal ulceration and perforation requiring penetrating keratoplasty. The patient admitted to using Acular every hour, ciprofloxocin every hour, and prednisolone acetate 1% QID postoperatively. RESULTS: Laboratory tests, including corneal cultures, were normal. A diagnosis of corneal ulceration secondary to incorrect use of high-dose ketorolac tromethamine was made. CONCLUSION: Judic

Pharmacological management of night vision disturbances after refractive surgery Results of a randomized clinical trial.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of diluted aceclidine eyedrops in reducing night vision disturbances after refractive surgery. SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology, Istituto Clinico Humanitas, Rozzano-Milano, Italy. METHODS: This double-masked randomized clinical trial included 30 patients (60 eyes) with chronic night vision disturbance after refractive surgery. Patients were randomly allocated to receive (1) placebo, (2) aceclidine 0.016%, or (3) aceclidine 0.032%. Drugs were administered once or twice daily. Anterior segment, haze, uncorrected visual acuity, best corrected vis

[Clinical and morphological correlations of corneal repair in rabbits after modeling of stromal defect and tectonic keratoplasty using human lenticules].

PURPOSE: To characterize structural changes in the rabbit cornea after tectonic keratoplasty using human lenticules and surface keratoplasty with Alloplant material based on in vivo anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) and histological examination. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty laboratory rabbits of the Soviet Chinchilla breed were used. All animals were sexually mature males and were randomly assigned to three groups. In group 1, a mechanical corneal defect created by keratectomy using a trephine and dissector was replaced by suturing two decellularized human lenticules, formin…

Comparative Analysis of Corneal Wound Healing: Differential Molecular Responses in Tears Following PRK, FS-LASIK, and SMILE Procedures.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: In this study, we aimed to analyze the changes in the expression profiles of selected messenger RNAs (mRNAs) and their encoded proteins in the tears of patients undergoing photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), femtosecond-assisted laser in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK), and small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) procedures. METHODS: A total of 120 patients were divided into three groups based on the laser vision correction (LVC) procedure: PRK, FS-LASIK, or SMILE. Tear samples were collected preoperatively and at 1, 7, 30, and 180 days postoperatively. The expression…

Corneal Asphericity and Higher-Order Aberrations after FS-LASIK and Trans-PRK for Myopia.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the corneal asphericity and higher-order aberrations (HOAs) of femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) with Smart Pulse Technology (SPT) assisted transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (Trans-PRK) for myopia and myopic astigmatism correction. METHODS: This prospective study analyzed 88 eyes of 44 patients treated with FS-LASIK and 64 eyes of 32 patients treated with Trans-PRK. All eyes had low to moderate myopia with or without astigmatism (spherical equivalent (SE) <-6.00 diopters). The uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected dista…

Distribution and Surgical Treatment of Corneal Dystrophies Over Eight Decades (1945-2024): An Analysis of Histopathologically Confirmed Cases from a German Center.

BACKGROUND: Corneal dystrophies are inherited disorders that can lead to significant visual impairment and often require surgical interventi … basement membrane dystrophies were increasingly treated with phototherapeutic or manual superficial keratectomy. Limbo-keratoplasty was introduced in the early 2000s for recurrent subepithelial and epithelial-stromal types. CONCLUSION: This study provides unique insights into the type distribution and surgical management of corneal dystrophies over eight dec …

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Regarding Refractive Eye Surgeries Among Adults in the United Arab Emirates.

Background and aim Refractive errors (REs) are a leading cause of visual impairment globally. Surgical correction methods like laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK), laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy (LASEK), and small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) are available in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), but public acceptance and understanding remain inconsistent. This study aims to assess knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding refractive surgery among adults in the UAE and to explore demographic and experiential factors influencing surgical uptake and perception. M…

PURPOSE: To illustrate the histopathology of keratoconic corneal epithelia and its micro-ribonucleic acid (miRNA) regulation. METHODS: Corneal epithelia were collected from 27 patients with keratoconus and 26 normal patients after surgery or by impression cytology. The miRNA profile was determined using miRNA microarray. The biological roles of miRNA target genes were delineated by gene ontology and pathway analyses.
