[Neurophysiological methods in evaliuation of neurorehabiltation in children].

The authors reviewed neurophysiological methods, which are used in the evaluation of children referred for neurorehabilitation. Rehabilitation techniques which may stimulate or provoke pathological changes in EEG must be ruled out. Electrophysiological and clinical improvement allow for the extension and intensification of rehabilitation. Normal EEG pattern ensures the safe use of techniques consisting of neuromuscular re-education or passive verticalisation, electrotherapy and thermotherapy. Quantitative and qualitative assessment of cognitive impairment is based on neuropsychological tests a

Random Number Generation and Executive Functions in Parkinson's Disease: An Event-Related Brain Potential Study.

BACKGROUND: The generation of random sequences is considered to tax executive functions and has been reported to be impaired in Parkinson's disease (PD) previously. OBJECTIVE: To assess the neurophysiological markers of random number generation in PD. METHODS: Event-related potentials (ERP) were recorded in 12 PD patients and 12 age-matched normal controls (NC) while either engaging in random number generation (RNG) by pressing the number keys on a computer keyboard in a random sequence or in ordered number generation (ONG) necessitating key presses in the canonical order. Key presses were p

Effectiveness of C5 or C6-Cz assembly in predicting immediate post operative facial nerve deficit.

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative neurophysiology monitoring (IOM) is a valuable tool in cerebellopontine angle (CPA) surgeries posing risk to the cranial nerves. Transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) for cranial nerves has been performed in the last 7 years, for obtaining the facial nerve motor evoked potential (MEP), using either C3/C4-Cz or C3-C4 (or inverse) stimulating points, which have been correlated with facial nerve functional outcome. METHOD: Intraoperative surgical and electrophysiological findings were documented prospectively. Patient files were reviewed for clinical data. We studi

The use of sensory action potential to evaluate inferior alveolar nerve damage after orthognathic surgery.

To assess and monitor the common event of neurosensory disturbance to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) after bilateral sagittal split osteotomy, we used clinical sensory tests and neurophysiologic test sensory action potentials. The diagnostic value of these tests was evaluated by comparing them with the degree of nerve damage reported by patients. Fourteen patients undergoing bilateral sagittal split osteotomy were analyzed preoperatively and 2 years postoperatively. Patients were evaluated bilaterally for positive and negative symptoms: light touch sensation, paraesthesia, hyperesthesia, an

Brainstem frequency-following responses in Rett syndrome.

The brainstem frequency-following response (FFR) is a short-latency evoked response that reflects waveform properties of periodic auditory stimuli. Unlike neural activity evoked by transient stimuli, the FFR originates in phase-locked neurons that provide unique information concerning the early processing of auditory inputs. FFRs elicited by a pure tone were recorded from 9 Rett syndrome patients (age 26-55 years, mean = 34.4 years) and compared with those of 18 normal infants (age 2-10 months, mean = 5.0 months), and 113 young adult (age 18-30 years, mean = 22.2 years) controls. The Rett synd

Theta-cordance as a biomarker of treatment response to intermittent theta burst stimulation in patients with treatment-resistant depression.

OBJECTIVE: To test whether baseline or treatment-related changes in prefrontal theta cordance are associated with clinical outcome after intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) for major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 30 inpatients receiving 10 sessions of left-sided iTBS over 2 weeks. Resting-state 19-channel EEG was processed to compute theta cordance (plus delta/alpha/beta) in predefined cortical clusters pre/post the iTBS treatment period. Depression was rated pre/post with the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) and the Major Depression Inventory (

The impact of a two-hour endurance run on brain activity monitored over 24 h.

Acute exercise has been shown to enhance cognitive abilities, particularly those governed by the prefrontal cortex, such as executive function. However, the effects of prolonged exercise on cognition and brain activity, especially over extended recovery periods, remain underexplored. This pilot study investigated the effects of two hours of moderate-intensity running on oscillatory brain activity and working memory performance, monitored across a 24-hour recovery period-an interval not previously studied. Using electroencephalography (EEG) and a 2-back task, resting-state brain activity and ta

Ag2S/Ag Nanoparticle Microelectrodes for In Vivo Potentiometric Measurement of Hydrogen Sulfide Dynamics in the Rat Brain.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays a pivotal role in gas signal transduction, neuroprotection, and regulation of physiological and pathological processes. However, in vivo tracking the dynamic of hydrogen sulfide in the complex brain environment still faces huge challenges. This study demonstrates a new potentiometric method to monitor in vivo the dynamics of hydrogen sulfide in the rat brain using silver nanoparticles (AgNPs)-modified carbon fiber microelectrodes (AgNPs/CFE) pretreated with Na2S (i.e., Ag2S/AgNPs/CFE), which acts as a solid-contact and ion-selective microelectrode. The Ag2S/AgNPs/C

Electrophysiological and olfactometric evaluation of long-term COVID-19.

COVID-19 is a public health emergency with cases increasing globally. Its clinical manifestations range from asymptomatic and acute respiratory disease to multiple organ dysfunction syndromes and effects of COVID-19 in the long term. Interestingly, regardless of variant, all COVID-19 share impairment of the sense of smell and taste. We would like to report, as far as we know, the first comprehensive neurophysiological evaluation of the long-term effects of SARS-CoV-2 on the olfactory system with potential-related neurological damage. The case report concerns a military doctor, with a monitored

Multidimensional reorganization of static and dynamic brain network architecture following rTMS in young children with autism spectrum disorder and co-occurring intellectual disability.

AIMS: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has emerged as a promising intervention for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, the neurophysiological mechanisms driving its therapeutic effects, particularly regarding the complex reorganization of brain network dynamics, remain largely uncharacterized. This study aimed to elucidate the multidimensional network reconfiguration induced by low-frequency rTMS and identify specific electrophysiological predictors of clinical response in young children with ASD. METHODS: In a randomized, sham-controlled trial, 44 young children with

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation for disorders of consciousness: a narrative review of neurophysiological mechanisms, clinical evidence, and future directions.

Disorders of consciousness (DoC) following severe brain injury remain difficult to treat, and effective non-invasive therapeutic options are still limited. Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) has recently emerged as a promising neuromodulation approach in this field. In this narrative review, we synthesize recent evidence on taVNS for DoC across four domains: neurophysiological mechanisms, multimodal monitoring evidence, clinical efficacy, and stimulation parameter optimization with safety considerations. Current mechanistic models suggest that taVNS may influence consciou

Therapeutic potential of GLP-1 receptor agonists and SGLT2 inhibitors in diabetic neuropathy: a critical appraisal.

The management of type 2 diabetes (T2D) has recently witnessed a paradigm shift extending beyond blood glucose regulation towards cardiovascular and renal health targeted by cardiovascular outcome trials (CVOTs) of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) and sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i). Preclinical studies suggest a potential role for GLP-1RAs and SGLT2i in the treatment of diabetic neuropathy and neuropathic pain. However, to date largely only small-size phase II shorter-term randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of heterogeneous designs and quality have been

Classification of cortico-cortical evoked potential waveforms and their implications for brain anatomy.

OBJECTIVE: Cortico-cortical evoked potential (CCEP) waveforms typically exhibit two negative peaks, an early peak (N1, 10-50 ms) and a late peak (N2, 100-500 ms). We aimed to classify CCEP waveform morphologies and examine their anatomical distributions. METHODS: CCEP waveforms were classified as follows: Type I showed a typical N1 peak latency (10-50 ms), whereas Types II and III showed delayed N1 peaks (50-100 ms and > 100 ms, respectively). Type IV represented positive responses with inverted morphology, and Type V represented multimodal responses. A total of 7928 CCEP waveforms obtained f
