The aim of the present study was to retrospectively review the treatment outcome of low subcondylar temporomandibular joint fractures. The retrospective analysis was performed on all patients treated for low subcondylar fractures (below the sigmoid notch) between 2006 and 2011. Patients were divided into two groups: the closed reduction group (maxillomandibular fixation, MMF) and the open reduction group (anteroparotid transmasseteric (APTM) approach). Out of 129 condylar fractures, a total of 37 patients met the inclusion criterion of a fracture below the sigmoid notch (low subcondylar). Ten

Trochanteric intramedullary nailing has gained widespread acceptance and popularity among orthopedic trauma surgeons. Whereas some simple fracture patterns are easily reduced and nailed, others may present a major challenge for the surgeon. Anatomical reduction and optimal placement of the intramedullary implants are the most important factors for fracture healing and good functional outcome. Closed anatomical reduction is to be achieved before the nail is inserted. However, especially in inter- and subtrochanteric fractures, a limited open or even open reduction technique may be necessary to

CASE: This report presents 2 extremely rare cases of anterior hip dislocations with associated greater trochanter and acetabular fractures. Both were treated with prompt reduction of the dislocation and open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of the greater trochanter fracture. The second patient also underwent ORIF of the acetabulum fracture. Harris Hip Score was 72 at 2.5 years and 95 at 15 years, respectively.
CONCLUSION: We recommend prompt reduction of the hip dislocation, open reduction and internal fixation of the greater trochanter and acetabular fractures, and addressing any asso

Background Volar dislocations of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) are rare and often missed during initial evaluation. Chronic dislocations and disability can occur when DRUJ dislocations are unrecognized and not reduced. DRUJ dislocations often occur with other wrist injuries, which may complicate reduction. Closed reduction can fail to reduce DRUJ dislocations, in which case open reduction is necessary. Case Description This case describes a patient who had a volar dislocation of the DRUJ with an associated dorsal distal radius fracture dislocation. Initial attempts at closed reduction w

Tibial tubercle fractures in adolescents are uncommon injuries which typically occur in 12-16 year-old males involved in athletic activities. We hereby present our experience in the surgical treatment of such lesion. By reviewing all the tibial tuberosity fractures treated surgically at our institution between January 2012 and January 2016, we were able to identify 12 patients (14 fractures), of which 11 males and 1 female, whose average age at the time of the trauma was of 14.05. According to the Ogden classification, we identified two Type IIA fractures, one Type IIB fracture, one Type IIIB

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous techniques have been described for the treatment of nondisplaced scaphoid fractures, although less information has been reported about outcomes for unstable, displaced fractures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the union and complication rates following manual closed reduction and percutaneous screw placement for a consecutive series of unstable, displaced scaphoid fractures.
METHODS: A total of 28 patients (average age, 27 years; 22 male/6 female) were treated for isolated unstable displaced scaphoid waist fractures. Closed reduction and percutaneous headless,

The success of treatment for condylar fractures is usually assessed by functional outcomes, while studies on patient perceptions are scarce. A cross-sectional study was performed to assess the middle-term quality of life, related to both general health and oral health, of patients treated for subcondylar fracture, either by open reduction or by closed fixation, compared to healthy volunteers. In a single trauma centre, among 226 consecutive patients with subcondylar fractures that were treated in years 2018-2019 (two to three years prior to the survey), 148 fulfilled the selection criteria. BACKGROUND: Open reduction and internal fixation through the Kocher-Langenbeck approach is the treatment of choice for selected acetabular fracture patterns. Patient positioning (lateral vs prone) can affect the outcome and post-operative complications.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort of seventy-three adult patients' with acetabular fractures treated with open reduction and internal fixation through the Kocher-Langenbeck approach in either prone or lateral position. Primary outcome was the quality of radiographic fracture reduction; secondary outcomes included operative time, intra-operative

Despite advancement in the knowledge and understanding of talar neck fracture biomechanics and refined techniques of treatment, a significant number of patients with these fractures have long term complications. Anatomic reduction is the goal in all situations where possible. Careful follow-up of patients is mandatory to prevent unrecognized displacement of the fracture fragment as the swelling of the extremity subsides in the cast. Weight bearing should be delayed until radiographic union of the fracture is apparent, if possible. There is a tendency today towards increased use of open reducti

An 18-year-old man with a fracture of the mandibular symphysis and both condylar heads was treated by open reduction of the fractured symphysis and closed reduction of the fractures of the condylar heads. As the open-bite was not resolved by the operation, elastic traction was applied for three weeks, but there was no improvement. Finally, we gave radiofrequency treatment to the anterior bellies of the digastric muscle, after which the open-bite disappeared and at the follow-up examinations there was no recurrence.

The Bado III Monteggia lesion is an uncommon fracture in children. Radial head dislocation can occur due to intra- or extra-articular fractures of the olecranon. In extra-articular ulnar fractures, heterogeneous operative methods are proposed in different case reports. The objective of this study is to determine if closed reduction of the ulnar fracture, either without osteosynthesis or by using TEN, is a safe treatment option. In a multicenter study, we retrospectively analyzed 26 children who were treated for an extra-articular proximal metaphyseal ulnar fracture with dislocation of the radi

Unstable ankle fractures are demanding injuries to treat. Open reduction and internal fixation are accepted as standard care, however, in patients with severe soft tissue damage or serious medical conditions, this approach may not always be advisable. Closed reduction with temporary fixation using vertical transarticular pins is one method to maintain joint alignment until an open technique is possible. Fourteen patients (median age: 59.5 years) with unstable ankle fractures, including three type-2 open fractures, were included in the study. Open reduction and fixation was delayed because of s

BACKGROUND: Bilateral trans-scaphoid perilunate fracture dislocation is an infrequent injury that usually occurs following either high-energy trauma or a fall on an outstretched hand. It can be easily overlooked in patients with polytrauma and may lead to an unfavorable prognosis with pain and arthritis.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 26-year-old man with a history of a fall from a two-story building, diagnosed with bilateral trans-scaphoid perilunate fracture-dislocation, bilateral calcaneal fractures, and a burst fracture of the third lumbar vertebra (L3). In the emergency depa

CASE: A 71-year-old woman presented with post-traumatic arthritis 11 months after open reduction and internal fixation for a left proximal humerus fracture (PHF) dislocation. After revision to reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA), the patient's left upper extremity was found to be avascular. An emergent thrombectomy was performed with restoration of arterial flow after removal of an acute-on-chronic axillary artery thrombus.
CONCLUSION: Although rare, as rTSA becomes more common for management of PHF, incidence of associated vascular injuries is likely to rise. Screening methods and cli
