OBJECTIVE: The proportion of cell proliferation-associated nuclear Ki-67 antigen positive alveolar macrophages was compared in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluids (BAL) of patients with dermato-/polymyositis (DM-PM), scleroderma-myositis overlap syndrome (Scl-M), systemic sclerosis (SSc), and undifferentiated connective tissue disease (UCTD).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We examined 8 patients with DM-PM, 3 with Scl-M, 11 with SSc, and 10 with UCTD. The patients were selected on the basis of their interstitial lung involvement diagnosed by non-invasive methods.

A case of calcinosis cutis, appeared since childhood in a woman 73-years-old, affected by diabetes mellitus with complications, is described. This uncommon disorder is discussed on the basis of data from recent literature. Calcinosis cutis is a condition characterized by the deposition of crystals of calcium phosphate (hydroxyapatite) in the skin. Calcinosis cutis may be idiopathic or secondary. Mounier-Kuhn syndrome (MKS) or tracheobronchomegaly includes clinical and radiographic findings of tracheobronchial dilatation and recurrent respiratory infections. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The clinical practice of introducing anti-inflammatory therapies in paediatric autoimmune disorders has changed substantially in the last two decades. This is partly due to the fact that we are able to put disease into remission with potent drugs, and so the issue of when to introduce these drugs is important. This review will seek to highlight the consequences of chronic inflammation and the change to outcomes if adequate or 'aggressive' treatment is given early to induce remission.

AIM: To describe the clinical features of lipodystrophia centrifugalis abdominalis infantilis (LCAI) with special attention to the erythema which is seen around the depressed lesion.

32 patients with secondary Raynaud's syndrome and known basic disease (thromboangiitis obliterans, arterial sclerosis, collagenosis) were examined by high-resolution arterial subtraction angiography. We report three cases of systemic sclerosis demonstrating four different neurological complications: trigeminal neuropathy, peripheral neuropathy, carpal-tunnel syndrome and prolonged response to local anaesthesia. A review of the literature reveals a wide range of neurological abnormalities associated with systemic sclerosis. When they occur, these are often presenting features.

An unique autosomal recessive ectodermal dysplasia is present in 5 sibs from the Indian Ocean island of Rodrigues. The main manifestations are total congenital alopecia, bilateral congenital cataracts, and skin changes of the hands and feet including sclerodactyly, hyperkeratosis, contractures, and pseudoainhum formation. The phenotype differs from that of other genetic ectodermal dysplasias and independent syndromic status is probable.
