Comparative morphology of Astraea latispina (Philippi, 1844) and Astraea olfersii (Philippi, 1846) (Mollusca, Gastropoda, Turbinidae).

The present study examines comparatively the soft parts of turbinids Astraea latispina and Astraea olfersii. The characters of soft parts of these species, in agreement with Trochoidea organization, allow a differential diagnosis on the cefalic lappets, appendix of eye-stalk, hypobranchial glands, jaws, radulae, and stomach spiral caecum, which information will be helpful in taxonomic studies.

Female sex is associated with comparable 5-year outcomes after contemporary endovascular aneurysm repair despite more challenging anatomy.

BACKGROUND: Women with abdominal aortic aneurysms less often meet anatomic criteria for endovascular repair and experience worse perioperative and long-term survival. METHODS: We compared long-term survival, aneurysm-related mortality, and rates of endoleaks and reinterventions between male and female patients in the Endurant Stent Graft Natural Selection Global Postmarket Registry (ENGAGE) using 2:1 propensity score matching. RESULTS: There were 1130 male patients and 133 female patients, yielding 399 patients after matching (266 male patients, 133 female patients). Female patients were old

[Morphology and development of the cranium of Felis silvestris f. catus Linné 1758--a contribution to the comparative anatomy of the Carnivora. II. Orbitotemporal region].

In Felis 1, the orbitotemporal region is very compressed in rostrocaudal direction. As a result, most structures are tightly pressed together. Continuing development towards the stage of Felis 2, the cranium becomes remarkably elongated in this region. In early embryonic stage, Felis builds up a primary side wall, being remarkable complete. The following development towards Felis 1 and 2 gives an interesting example for the elements changing their configuration and position during ontogenesis and thereby illustrates the problems of interpreting these conditions phylogenetically and systematica

The Typical Body Segment: An Anatomy Teaching Paradigm Created by Matt Cartmill and Others While Teaching Gross Anatomy at Duke University.

Within allied-health programs, gross anatomy is widely regarded as a foundational and content-dense course challenging instructors and students alike to manage an overwhelming volume of information within an increasingly constrained curriculum. In the late 1960's, the Duke University medical curriculum was redesigned to produce 'scientists-doctors' intensifying the instructional challenges of gross anatomy. In the wake of a series of unsuccessful experiments, comparative anatomists Matt Cartmill and James Shafland were recruited to develop and teach a medical gross anatomy course at Duke. Draw

The very rare Japanese endemic diving beetle Japanolaccophilus niponensis (Kamiya, 1939), (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae, Laccophilinae): larval morphology and phylogenetic comparison with other known Laccophilini.

The three larval instars of Japanolaccophilus niponensis (Kamiya, 1939) (Coleoptera: Adephaga, Laccophilinae) are described for the first time according to the now genevralized larval descriptive format of Dytiscidae (Coleoptera: Adephaga), which incorporates detailed chaetotaxic and morphometric analyses. A parsimony analysis based on larval characteristics of 14 Laccophilini species in seven genera was conducted using the program TNT. One of the main results is that Japanolaccophilus Satô, 1972, which so far was treated as being related to Neptosternus Sharp, 1882 now stands out as sister to

Comparative embryology of the carotid body.

Vertebrate carotid bodies and related structures (branchial arch oxygen chemoreceptors in fishes, carotid labyrinth in amphibians, chemoreceptors in the wall of the common carotid and its branches in birds) develop in embryos when neural crest cells, blood vessels, and nerve fibers from sympathetic and cranial nerve ganglia invade mesenchymal primordia in the wall of the 3rd branchial arch. This review focuses on literature published since the 1970s investigating similarities and differences in the embryological development of 3rd arch oxygen chemoreceptors, especially between mammals and bird

Renal Collecting System Anatomy in Living Kidney Donors by Computed Tomographic Urography: Protocol Accuracy Compared to Intravenous Pyelographic and Surgical Findings.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the accuracy of triple-bolus computed tomography urography (CTU) as a surrogate of intravenous pyelography (IVP) for determining the anatomy of the urinary collecting system in living kidney donors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In an analytic descriptive cross-sectional study, 36 healthy kidney donors were recruited during 12 months. Preoperative IVP and CTU were utilized to evaluate kidneys' anatomy; major and minor calyces and variation were used as anatomical indices to compare the accuracy of CTU and IVP; the images were then compared to surgical findings. RESULTS: Thir

Contributions of William Hunter (1718-1783) to dental science.

This article briefly describes some of the many and varied contributions which William Hunter made to medical and dental science in the eighteenth century. His work provided the foundations from which anatomy became one of the cornerstones of modern medicine. Hunter's teaching methods are still influential today and his specimen collection is one of the most comprehensive in existence.

Comparative anatomy of the middle cerebral artery, rhinal and endorhinal sulci, piriform lobe, entorhinal cortex, olfactory tubercule, anterior perforate substance, and hippocampus: A dissection study.

The literature describing the complex anatomy of the middle cerebral artery (MCA), lenticulostriate arteries, and recurrent artery of Heubner, does not discuss the comparative anatomy of the cerebrum, MCA, the recurrent artery of Heubner, and the relationship of the MCA with the rhinal sulci. The entorhinal literature does not detail the comparative anatomic modification of the rhinal and endorhinal sulci, piriform lobe and the hippocampus's compressed positional change in the temporal lobe. This investigation's objectives were to analyze the comparative anatomic modifications of the cerebrum,

[The anatomical and functional origin of the first bipedalism].

This communication is the synthesis of ten years of researchers of comparative anatomy done by the author or under his control on fossil Hominids, three million years old, found by his expeditions in Eastern Ethiopia. It brings, for the first time, the odd picture of a skeleton adapted to arboricolism and bipedalism together. The rachis has already the curves of an erect being but with at least a thoraco-lumbar cyphosis a bit more elongated than in our own rachis; the pelvis is wide and shallow like the pelvis of a biped but with many particular features like the width of the iliac wings, a gr

Uncommon course of the ulnar artery through the pronator teres muscle.

In this paper, we describe a very rare variant in the course of the ulnar artery that we encountered in dissecting the right upper limb of a 74-year-old man. The ulnar artery arose standardly from the brachial artery in the cubital fossa. However, its ensuing course differed from the norm. The artery entered together with the ulnar vein and median nerve into the pronator canal (between the humeral and ulnar heads of the pronator teres). Further, the ulnar artery descended classically to the ulnar side of the forearm between the flexor carpi ulnaris and flexor digitorum superficialis. Knowledge

Major ocular glands (harderian gland and lacrimal gland) of the musk shrew (Suncus murinus) with a review on the comparative anatomy and histology of the mammalian lacrimal glands.

The Harderian gland of the musk shrew Suncus murinus is elongated anteroposteriorly from in front of the eye to behind the ear. The gland is divided into two portions: an anterior portion (A portion) and a posterior portion (P portion). The single secretory duct of the gland emerges from the anterior end of the P portion, receives several secretory ducts of the A portion during the course along it, runs around the ventral aspect of the eyeball, and finally opens into the anterior corner of conjunctival sacs. The two portions of the gland show a fundamentally similar histological structure, hav

[Revisiting Phylogenetic Classification: The World of Comparative Neuroanatomy].

Comparative neuroanatomy examines the phylogeny of the nervous system by tracing structural homologies. The cerebral cortex, basal ganglia, and cerebellum are areas where phylogenetic classification is widely applied, but recent findings have prompted a reassessment of long-standing views. For example, emerging evidence suggests that the neocortex is an ancient system originating from cyclostomes. Furthermore, the concept of the archicerebellum is being questioned, and the theory that the cerebellum originates from it has lost its bases. Comparative neuroanatomy is also expanding towards newer

Transesophageal Echocardiography in Healthy Young Adult Male Baboons (Papio hamadryas anubis): Normal Cardiac Anatomy and Function in Subhuman Primates Compared to Humans.

Implantable, viable tissue engineered cardiovascular constructs are rapidly approaching clinical translation. Species typically utilized as preclinical large animal models are food stock ungulates for which cross species biological and genomic differences with humans are great. Multiple authorities have recommended developing subhuman primate models for testing regenerative surgical strategies to mitigate xenotransplant inflammation. However, there is a lack of specific quantitative cardiac imaging comparisons between humans and the genomically similar baboons (Papio hamadryas anubis). This st

Comparative anatomy of dissected optic lobes, optic ventricles, midbrain tectum, collicular ventricles, and aqueduct: evolutionary modifications as potential explanation for non-tumoral aqueductal anomalies in humans.

PURPOSE: An extensive literature has postulated multiple etiologies for aqueductal stenosis. No publications were found, discussing that evolutionary modifications might explain aqueductal anomalies. This study's objectives were to review the evolutionary modifications of vertebrates' tectum structures that might explain human aqueduct anomalies. Undertaking vertebrate comparative study is currently not feasible in view of limitations in obtaining vertebrate material. Thus, vertebrate material collected, injected, dissected, and radiographed in the early 1970s was analyzed, focusing on the aqu

Comparative Anatomy of the Nasal Cavity in the Common Dolphin Delphinus delphis L., Striped Dolphin Stenella coeruleoalba M. and Pilot Whale Globicephala melas T.: A Developmental Study.

Our goal was to analyze the main anatomical structures of the dolphin external nose and nasal cavity from fetal developmental stages to adult. Endoscopy was used to study the common development of the external nose and the melon, and nasal mucosa. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and anatomical sections were correlated with anatomical sections. Computed tomography (CT) was used to generate 3D reconstructions of the nasal bones and nasal cavities to study its development. Dissections, histological and pathological studies were carried out on the nasal mucosa to understand its function. These re

The colonic groove or furrow: a comparative morphological study of six species of African mole-rats (Rodentia, Bathyergidae).

Herbivorous mammals such as nutrias, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and mole-rats have a longitudinal mucosal colonic groove (furrow) in their ascending colon, which is thought to play a role in the colonic separation mechanism (CSM). It is not known whether this groove is structurally modified to adapt to this function in mole-rat species. The morphology of this groove was studied in 32 mol-rats, four species, one of which consisted of three subspecies, endemic to southern Africa and two species found in eastern Africa. The macroscopic morphology of the groove was documented, and samples for histo
