Geopsychiatry and the complex mental health challenges of conflict: a review examining local and distal psychiatric outcomes in a fractured world.

Armed conflicts can engender substantial detrimental effects for mental health, both within immediate settings and for faraway populations. Guided by frameworks from geopsychiatry, this narrative review underlines the local- and macro-level psychiatric consequences of conflicts, informed by illustrative findings from academic sources and gray literature focusing on contemporary global disputes. Specifically, the review demonstrates that exposure to conflict is consistently associated with elevated rates of mental illnesses, which are worsened by devastated healthcare systems and related phenom…

Social media as an effective therapeutic tool for addressing obsessive-compulsive disorder: a case study.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic but very treatable medical condition. Adhering to the therapy plan is considered one of the biggest challenges for OCD patients, especially when communities are insecure due to armed conflicts and political upheavals. This paper documents the results of using social media platforms (especially Facebook Messenger, which provides free internet access) to manage the symptoms of a young female with chronic OCD. The results suggest that social media can be a potentially effective therapeutic tool, mainly in situations where armed conflicts, displacem…

Intimate Partner Violence in the Canadian Armed Forces: The Role of Family Stress and Its Impact on Well-Being.

Unique demands of military life (e.g., deployment) can have a significant impact on family life. Although most families cope effectively with military life stressors, some may have difficulty adjusting, experiencing marital conflicts, and violence. Evidence suggests that unmanaged occupational demands may create family stress by interfering with efforts to fulfill family duties. This study examined the effects of work-family conflict and marital satisfaction on intimate violence experienced by Canadian Armed Forces members, and the impact of such violence on their psychological well-being (N =

The responsibility of bioethicists: The case study of Yemen.

In this article, we describe in detail the health and general living conditions resulting from the ongoing armed conflict in Yemen, including the historical and geopolitical underpinnings. In addition to mere reporting, we use Yemen as a case study to examine the responsibility of bioethicists in general. We find it unacceptable that bioethics neglects the largest humanitarian crisis taking place in the world at the moment as well as the largest Cholera outbreak in history. We argue that bioethicists should do more to address armed conflicts and their resulting basic human rights violations. W…

War and Health: the devastating impact of conflict on Wellbeing and Humanitarian Crises.

Health is a precious asset, essential for both individuals and communities. The wars that have affected various parts of the world in recent years have had a detrimental impact on health, leading to malnutrition and an increased vulnerability to epidemic diseases among the population, especially the poorest. Hospitals and healthcare facilities themselves have become primary strategic targets in many war zones. The destruction of infrastructure and hospitals, along with challenges in obtaining clean water and access to medicines, has contributed to the resurgence of epidemic diseases in countri

[The wars, epidemics and destiny of Empires of Ancient World].

The article considers the features of the impact of epidemics on the course of hostilities and the fate of the states of Antiquity. Three cases are presented as examples. The first one is related to the invasion of the Assyrian King Sennacherib in Judea and the attempt of his troops to take Jerusalem. The second case is related to the epidemic in Athens in the early years of the Peloponnesian war. The third one - with the epidemic in the Roman Empire in the 2nd half of the 2nd century AD. The analysis, based on information from extant sources, permitted to conclude that the intensity and destr

Successful polio supplementary immunisation activities in a security compromised zone - Experiences from the Southwest region of Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Supplementary immunisation activities (SIAs) play a central role in polio eradication efforts. Armed conflicts resulting in insecurity negatively affect SIAs. In the Southwest region of Cameroon, armed conflicts persisted in 2018. We present our experiences of conducting a polio SIA in an insecure region. METHODS: The SIA took place from the 2nd to 4th of March 2018 and targeted 307,920 children aged 0-59 months. Bivalent polio vaccine was used. Before the SIA, extensive planning was done under the leadership of a Central Technical Group. Planning included security assessment, adv…

Stroke Care in Conflict and War Zones -Peace Saves Lives!

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cardiovascular conditions and related risk factors are an important and common group of diseases. Stroke is a disease that requires rapid diagnosis and treatment, and there are significant inequalities in stroke diagnosis, treatment and follow-up between countries, regions, societies and economic levels. This inequality becomes even more evident in regions where war and turmoil continue. What is the goal of your paper? What questions did you seek to answer? This review aims to explore whether war and armed conflicts impact stroke and care and describe potential mechanisms an…

Telemedicine in Times of Crisis-A SWOT Assessment Based on Romanian Healthcare Professionals' Perceptions.

Background and Objectives: Unlike previous studies that have examined telemedicine primarily in pandemic contexts, this research adopts a dual-crisis perspective, assessing perceptions during both pandemics and armed conflicts. Recent health crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic and armed conflicts, have exposed vulnerabilities in health systems and underscored the need for evidence-based strategies to enhance resilience. Telemedicine has emerged as an essential tool for ensuring continuity of care, mitigating workforce shortages, and improving access for vulnerable groups. This study examin…

Understanding Posttraumatic Growth in Conflict-Affected Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Scoping Review.

PURPOSE: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees reports that armed conflicts burden children, comprising nearly half of the population in most war and conflict regions. Despite experiencing trauma from exposure to armed conflict, some children experience positive psychological change as well. The study aims to systematically review existing literature to explore the factors that promote posttraumatic growth in children and adolescents exposed to armed conflict. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This systematic scoping review followed five consecutive steps specified in the Arksey and O'Malley f…

Lessons from the field: adapting lymphatic filariasis morbidity mapping and patient care amidst conflict in Ethiopia.

Conflict in Ethiopia has prevailed in recent years and is impeding the implementation of lymphatic filariasis elimination activities for morbidity management and disability prevention. This led to the need for alternative approaches to ensure safe and effective implementation. Here, we outline the challenges that were faced (e.g., insecurity, restricted travel to external field teams, limited in-person training, direct patient care). First, we describe what potential solutions were discussed and decided. Second, we summarise the planned adapted strategy and how it was implemented through centr

Dental morbidity in United Kingdom Armed Forces, Iraq 2003.

The aim of this article was to review the dental morbidity experienced by U.K. Armed Forces serving in Iraq from deployment on Operation Telic in January 2003 until the end of phase 1 on May 1, 2003. U.K. Armed Forces dental teams treated 1800 emergency patients, including 135 prisoners of war. A total of 1523 of these were regular troops and 101 were reservists or Royal Fleet Auxiliary troops. This gave morbidity rates of 148 cases per 1,000 personnel per year for the Royal Navy/Royal Marines and 160 cases per 1,000 per year for the Army. Lost restorations and fractured teeth were by far the

[Surgical treatment of traumatic arteriovenous fistulas of extremities].

The number of victims with damage to the great vessels has increased in recent years due to escalation of armed conflicts. Vascular damages comprise 3% of traumatic injuries in peacetime, and their incidence increases to 15% during hostilities. False aneurysms and traumatic arteriovenous fistulas follow vascular injury in 48.9-68.7% of cases. We present open surgical treatment of traumatic arteriovenous fistulas. The issues of diagnosis, surgical tactics, algorithm of intervention and options for successful treatment are described.

Combining environmental and socioeconomic data to understand determinants of conflicts in Colombia.

Conflicts cause immense human suffering, violate human rights, and affect people's stability. Colombia is affected for decades by a high level of armed conflicts and violence. The political and socio-economic situation, drug trafficking in the Colombian economy, and natural disasters events affect the country and foster general violence. In this work, we aim to evaluate the role of the socioeconomic, political, financial, and environmental determinants of conflicts in the Colombian context. To achieve these aims, we apply a spatial analysis to explore patterns and identify areas that suffer fr…

Measuring the intensity of conflicts in conservation.

Conflicts between the interests of biodiversity conservation and other human activities pose a major threat to natural ecosystems and human well-being, yet few methods exist to quantify their intensity and model their dynamics. We develop a categorization of conflict intensity based on the curve of conflict, a model originally used to track the escalation and deescalation of armed conflicts. Our categorization assigns six intensity levels reflecting the discourse and actions of stakeholders involved in a given conflict, from coexistence or collaboration to physical violence. Using a range of c…

Impact of population displacement and forced movements on the transmission and outbreaks of Aedes-borne viral diseases: Dengue as a model.

Population displacement and other forced movement patterns following natural disasters, armed conflicts or due to socioeconomic reasons contribute to the global emergence of Aedes-borne viral disease epidemics. In particular, dengue epidemiology is critically affected by situations of displacement and forced movement patterns, particularly within and across borders. In this respect, waves of human movements have been a major driver for the changing epidemiology and outbreaks of the disease on local, regional and global scales. Both emerging dengue autochthonous transmission and outbreaks in co…

The paper deals with the opportunities of using endovideosurgery in local armed conflicts. There were worked out methods and technique of endovideosurgical operations in case of gunshot wounds of a chest, a belly and lower limbs. Due to a low level of traumatism and high efficiency the method promotes the decrease of the number of complications, early activation of the insured servicemen during the post-operation period, the reduction in time of treatment and rehabilitation and can be recommended at the initial stage of medical evacuation.
