Effects of bacterial cellulose/thyme essential oil emulsion coating on the shelf life of chilled chicken meat.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a fiber substance produced by microbial fermentation. It is widely used in the food preservation industry because of its extremely pure texture, high crystallinity and high biocompatibility. In the present study, bacterial cellulose/thyme essential oil (BC/TEO-E) with antibacterial and fresh-keeping functions was prepared by ultrasonic treatment of modified bacterial cellulose for encapsulation of thyme essential oil, which effectively inhibited the spoilage of chilled chicken. RESULTS: The purified BC, produced by Acetobacter xylinum ATCC 53524, was ul

Light-chilling Stress Causes Hyper-accumulation of Iron in Shoot, Exacerbating Leaf Oxidative Damage in Cucumber.

Iron availability within the root system of plants fluctuates depending on various soil factors, which directly impacts plant growth. Simultaneously, various environmental stressors, such as high/low temperatures and high light intensity, affect plant photosynthesis in the leaves. However, the combined effects of iron nutrient conditions and abiotic stresses have not yet been clarified. In this study, we analyzed how iron nutrition conditions impact the chilling-induced damage on cucumber leaves (Cucumis sativus L.). When cucumbers were grown under different iron conditions and then exposed to

Bacterial dynamics and volatile metabolome changes of vacuum-packaged beef with different pH during chilled storage.

This study aimed to assess the growth of spoilage bacteria in Brazilian vacuum-packed beef across different pH ranges (5.4-5.8, 5.8-6.1, ≥6.1) stored at temperatures of 0 °C, 4 °C, and 7 °C. Additionally, the research sought to identify predominant spoilage bacteria at the genus level using 16S rDNA gene sequencing and analyze the principal volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by this microbiota through HS-SPME/GC-MS. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) consistently exhibited counts exceeding 6.0 Log CFU/g, regardless of temperature and pH conditions. The bacterial diversity in the meat samples r

Characterisation of the MLP genes in peach postharvest cold storage and the regulatory role of PpMLP10 in the chilling stress response.

The major latex proteins/ripening-related proteins are a subfamily of the Bet v 1 protein superfamily and are commonly involved in plant development and responses to various stresses. However, the functions of MLPs in the postharvest cold storage of fruits remain uninvestigated. Herein, we identified 30 MLP genes in the peach (Prunus persica) genome that were clustered into three subgroups. Chromosomal location analysis revealed that the PpMLP genes were unevenly distributed on five of the eight peach chromosomes. Synteny analysis of the MLP genes between peach and seven other plant species (f

Hydrogen sulfide-induced chilling resistance in peach fruit is performed via sustaining the homeostasis of ROS and RNS.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) application impacts on endogenous H2S, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) in cold-stored peach fruit were investigated. 20 μL L-1 H2S (NaHS as the donor) efficiently retarded the quality deterioration arising from chilling injury (CI), triggering endogenous H2S production, while enhancing antioxidant systems and ROS generation (NADPH oxidative enzyme). H2S promoted nitric oxide (NO) correlated with the S-nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR)-mediated GSNO reduction, while suppressing the peroxynitrite anion content. As the pivotal coenzyme

Jasmonic acid and salicylic acid induce the accumulation of sucrose and increase resistance to chilling injury in peach fruit.

BACKGROUND: Salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) can both enhance resistance of chilling injury (CI) in cold-storage peach fruit, but the regulatory mechanisms involved and whether there is a coordinated regulation between them is unclear. In this study, postharvest peach fruit were treated with an aqueous SA solution for 15 min or an aqueous JA solution for 30 s before storage at 4 °C for 35 days. RESULTS: SA and JA treatments both delayed and reduced development of internal browning (a symptom of CI) and induced the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide and sucrose. The SA and JA also red

Cold acclimation improves chill tolerance in the migratory locust through preservation of ion balance and membrane potential.

Most insects have the ability to alter their cold tolerance in response to temporal temperature fluctuations, and recent studies have shown that insect cold tolerance is closely tied to the ability to maintain transmembrane ion gradients that are important for the maintenance of cell membrane potential (Vm). Several studies have therefore suggested a link between preservation of Vm and cellular survival after cold stress, but none has measured Vm in this context. We tested this hypothesis by acclimating locusts (Locusta migratoria) to high (31°C) and low temperature (11°C) for 4 days before ex

Effects of long-term chilled storage of red deer epididymides on DNA integrity and motility of thawed spermatozoa.

We have carried out a study on the influence of prolonged cold storage (5 degrees C) of Iberian red deer epididymides on post-thaw sperm motility and DNA integrity. Twenty-nine pairs of testes, with attached epididymides, were collected during November and December. Spermatozoa from one of each of the pairs were immediately recovered, evaluated and frozen (control). The remaining epididymides were cooled to 5 degrees C and stored for 24, 96 and 192 h (experimental groups), after which spermatozoa were collected and frozen. Samples were evaluated before freezing, after thawing, and after a 2-h

Chill therapy in the patients with resuscitated cardiac arrest: a new weapon in the battle against anoxic brain injury.

Improved cooling technologies (such as newer intravascular cooling devices) may result in earlier attainment of target temperature and even more robust clinical benefits in the management of the survivors of cardiac arrest. Earlier cooling may also be facilitated by the introduction of cooled saline infusions in the emergency room setting, prior to induction of cooling in the intensive care unit. However, there is a need for studies of adjunctive therapies to minimize the risk of medical complications associated with hypothermia, the most serious of which is infection. We strongly believe that

Use of UV light for the inactivation of Listeria monocytogenes and lactic acid bacteria species in recirculated chill brines.

Ready-to-eat meat products have been implicated in several foodborne listeriosis outbreaks. Microbial contamination of these products can occur after thermal processing when products are chilled in salt brines. The objective of this study was to evaluate UV radiation on the inactivation of Listeria monocytogenes and lactic acid bacteria in a model brine chiller system. Two concentrations of brine (7.9% [wt/wt] or 13.2% [wt/wt]) were inoculated with a approximately 6.0 log CFU/ml cocktail of L. monocytogenes or lactic acid bacteria and passed through a UV treatment system for 60 min. Alpha-tocopherol is essential for acquired chill-light tolerance in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. strain PCC 6803.

Unlike Escherichia coli, the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. strain PCC 6803 is insensitive to chill (5 degrees C) in the dark but rapidly losses viability when exposed to chill in the light (100 micromol photons m(-2) s(-1)). Preconditioning at a low temperature (15 degrees C) greatly enhances the chill-light tolerance of Synechocystis sp. strain PCC 6803. This phenomenon is called acquired chill-light tolerance (ACLT). Preconditioned wild-type cells maintained a substantially higher level of alpha-tocopherol after exposure to chill-light stress. Mutants unable to synthesize alpha-tocopherol

Successful artificial insemination in the koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) using extended and extended-chilled semen collected by electroejaculation.

Artificial insemination in the koala using chilled, electroejaculated semen provides for a marked improvement in the reproductive and genetic management of captive koala colonies in Australia and internationally, and makes available the option of using semen collected from wild populations to expand restricted gene pools. Dilution of koala semen for artificial insemination is complicated because koalas are induced ovulators, and it is thought that ovulating factors are present in the semen, so that semen extension for preservation purposes might be anticipated to result in a failure to induce

Effect of immersion chilling of broiler chicken carcasses in monochloramine on lipid oxidation and halogenated residual compound formation.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of immersion chilling of broiler chicken carcasses in tap water (TAP) or TAP containing 50 ppm of monochloramine (MON) with respect to chloroform formation, total chlorine content, 2-thiobarbituric acid (TBA) values, and fatty acid profiles. Ten broiler chicken carcasses were chilled in TAP or MON for 6 h. After exposure, the carcasses were removed and cut in half along the median plane into right and left halves. After roasting the left halves, samples of the breast, thigh, and skin (with fat) were collected, subjected to fatty acid profiling, a

Exogenous 24-epibrassinolide enhances chilling tolerance in Phalaenopsis-type Dendrobium through coordinated physiological and transcriptomic responses.

INTRODUCTION: Phalaenopsis-type Dendrobium is a commercially important tropical orchid that is highly sensitive to chilling, which can cause premature leaf senescence and abscission. METHODS: We evaluated the protective effect of exogenous 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) and integrated time-resolved RNA-seq with physiological traits previously characterized in the same experimental framework. A concentration of 2.0 mg/L was selected for transcriptomic analysis based on the refined dose-response experiment. WGCNA was performed using 18 EBR-treated libraries. Global GO and KEGG outputs were retained a

Energy-sensing kinase OsSnRK1b and its regulator OsCTK1 promote chilling-induced stomatal closure and cold tolerance.

Low temperatures can present a major challenge to plant growth and development. Here we report that low energy response and stomatal closure are two important responses for plant cold tolerance. The rice SNF1-Related Kinase 1b (OsSnRK1b) has an evolutionarily conserved function in low energy response. Its protein abundance is positively regulated by a cold tolerance regulator Chilling Tolerance Kinase 1 (OsCTK1) through phosphorylation. Both OsCTK1 and OsSnRK1b promote chilling-induced stomatal closure and chilling tolerance, while overexpression of OsSnRK1b enhances stomatal closure and chill

Electrospinning of gelatin-based composite Nanofibrous coating loaded with Citral and its antibacterial application in chilled meat preservation.

Gelatin is an important biocompatible and sustainable material for developing novel active food packaging. Herein, we report a gelatin/citral emulsion electrospinning strategy using sodium dodecyl sulfate as both an emulsifier and crosslinking agent to achieve effective encapsulation of citral and continuous formation of bioactive nanofiber coatings. The resulting core-shell nanofibers (CIT-NF) exhibited an average diameter of 286.7 ± 83.6 nm with a citral loading capacity of 225.8 mg/g. Furthermore, a hydrophobic surface layer was constructed through gelatin/ethyl cellulose blend electrospinn

Breed-Specific Responses of Rabbit Semen to Chilling Storage: Sperm Quality, Acrosome Status, and Oxidative Stress Biomarkers.

Artificial insemination (AI) in rabbits depends largely on chilled semen storage, but the physiological responses to chilling and associated biochemical changes in seminal plasma (SP) remain poorly understood, particularly across breeds. This study aimed to compare the semen preservation capacity of Algerian local population (LAP) and New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits and to explore the relationship between SP oxidative stress biomarkers and sperm traits during 72 h of chilled storage at 5 °C. Semen pools (nine/breed) were evaluated at 0, 4, 24, 48, and 72 h for motility, viability, and acrosome
