Intact circadian rhythm despite cortisol hypersecretion in Alzheimer's disease: A meta-analysis.

Hypersecretion of the glucocorticoid steroid hormone cortisol by individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been suspected for several decades, during which time dozens of examinations of this phenomenon have been conducted and published. The goals of this investigation were to summarize this sizeable body of literature, test whether participant and methodological characteristics modify the magnitude of the AD-associated basal cortisol hypersecretion, and examine whether cortisol circadian rhythmicity is maintained among individuals with AD. To this end, the present meta-analysis and system

Anxiety, depression, stress, and cortisol levels in mothers of children undergoing maintenance therapy for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

The purpose of this study was to compare anxiety, depression, and stress between mothers of children during maintenance treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and matched controls. Twenty-six mothers were recruited from the hematology unit at a children's hospital, and 26 mothers were recruited from the community. Participants were matched to their child's age and gender. Mothers completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Perceived Stress Sale, and collected salivary cortisol 4 times a day for 3 consecutive days. Compared with mothers of healthy children, anxiety scores

Genetic variation of the mineralocorticoid receptor gene (MR, NR3C2) is associated with a conceptual endophenotype of "CRF-hypoactivity".

Recently, the "conceptual endophenotype" approach has been proposed as a means to identify subgroups of patients affected by stress-related psychiatric disorders. Conceptual endophenotypes consist of patterns of psychological, biological, and symptomatic elements. We studied a sample of patients seeking help for psychosomatic and stress-related disorders (total N = 469), who were evaluated with a diagnostic instrument that integrates psychological and biological data to derive 13 endophenotypes, or Neuropattern. The goal of this study was to explore associations between common variations of th

Parental depression and parent and child stress physiology: Moderation by parental hostility.

This study examined the moderating role of parental hostility on the associations between parental depression and the cortisol awakening response (CAR) and morning cortisol levels of both parents and children. 148 parents and 148 preschool-aged children provided salivary cortisol samples at waking, 30 and 45 min post-waking on two consecutive days. Parental depression was assessed using a clinical interview, and parental hostility was assessed using an observational parent-child interaction task. Results indicated that the combination of parental lifetime depression and high parental hostility

Loneliness, positive social interactions, and diurnal cortisol among mid-to-later life adults in everyday life.

Loneliness, the subjective feeling of social isolation, is a major public health concern linked to poor health, including stress-related diseases such as cardiovascular disease. However, less is known about how loneliness relates to biological functioning in everyday life and whether age and social interactions shape these associations. We investigated whether loneliness self-reported in everyday life related to the dynamic range of diurnal cortisol (CDR) compared to other indicators of diurnal cortisol (including the cortisol awakening response [CAR], diurnal cortisol slope [DCS], and area un

Impact of menopause on responses to hypoxia and incidence of acute mountain sickness.

PURPOSE: Menopause results in decreased ovarian hormones, potentially impacting physiological responses to hypoxia and its tolerance. This study explored menopause's influence on physiological responses during rest and exercise in normobaric hypoxia and its role in predicting acute mountain sickness (AMS). METHODS: Thirteen eumenorrheic women in their mid-luteal phase (EW, age = 32 ± 8 year) and fifteen postmenopausal women (PW, age = 63 ± 2 year) were examined on two occasions. Their ovarian hormonal levels were measured. In the first visit, hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR), physiological

Dehydroepiandrosterone and cortisol as markers of HPA axis dysregulation in women with low sexual desire.

Previous research has found lower serum levels of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) or its sulfated form, DHEA-S, in women diagnosed with Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD). Given that DHEA and DHEA-S have multiple direct actions on the brain as well as anti-glucocorticoid properties, it is possible that lower levels of DHEA directly impact women's sexual functioning. To date, the significance of the lower DHEA levels remains unclear. To our knowledge, there has been no empirical study of stress hormones as markers of HPA dysregulation in women with HSDD. To attend to this gap, the present s

A review of the effects of acute and chronic cannabinoid exposure on the stress response.

While cannabis has been used for centuries for its stress-alleviating properties, the effects of acute and chronic cannabinoid exposure on responses to stress remain poorly understood. This review provides an overview of studies that measured stress-related endpoints following acute or chronic cannabinoid exposure in humans and animals. Acute cannabinoid exposure increases basal concentrations of stress hormones in rodents and humans and has dose-dependent effects on stress reactivity in humans and anxiety-like behavior in rodents. Chronic cannabis exposure is associated with dampened stress r

Postpartum symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress: differential relationships to women's cortisol profiles.

PURPOSE: Women are at high risk of stress, anxiety, and depression during the postpartum but the ways in which these different types of psychological distress are related to cortisol regulation is not clear. We examined the distinct association of each type of distress with women's average cortisol level, cortisol awakening response (CAR), cortisol decline across the day (diurnal slope), and overall amount of cortisol secretion across the day (AUCG). METHODS: At 6 months postpartum, a diverse group of 58 women completed measures of depression, anxiety, perceived stress, and life stressors. Ea

Elevated social stress levels and depressive symptoms in primary hyperhidrosis.

Primary hyperhidrosis is defined as excessive sweating of certain body areas without physiological reasons. Hyperhidrotic individuals report a high psychological strain and an impairment of their quality of life. Thus, the aim of the study is to investigate the relation between hyperhidrosis and different psychological as well as physiological aspects of chronic stress as a co-factor for the etiology of depression. In this study, forty hyperhidrotic subjects were compared to forty age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects. The Trier Inventory of Chronic Stress ('Trierer Inventar zum chroni

Childhood environment early life stress, caregiver warmth, and associations with the cortisol diurnal curve in adulthood: The coronary artery risk development in young adults (CARDIA) study.

BACKGROUND: Early life stress (ELS) is associated with increased morbidity and mortality across the lifecourse. Studies observing a relationship between ELS and stress physiology (cortisol), may help explain the connection to poor health outcomes, but have been limited by cortisol measures used. PURPOSE: We examined the association between ELS measured by a Risky Family (RF) environment questionnaire, and adult diurnal cortisol profile inclusive of multiple cortisol measures. METHODS: RF and cortisol were collected from Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults Study participants at f

Beyond the HPA-axis: Exploring maternal prenatal influences on birth outcomes and stress reactivity.

Accumulating evidence suggests that antenatal maternal stress is associated with altered behavioral and physiological outcomes in the offspring, however, whether this association is causal and the underlying biological mechanisms remain largely unknown. While the most studied mediator of maternal stress influences on the fetus has generally been cortisol, alternative novel markers of stress or inflammation warrant further consideration. The current investigation explored the influence of variations in self-reported symptoms of distress, stress hormones and inflammatory markers on infant birth

The Involvement of the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis in the Development of Hyperalgesia during the Early Postoperative Period.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperalgesia frequently occurs after surgery and is associated with adverse effects on surgical outcomes. Thus, we aimed to examine whether the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function after surgery is involved in the development of postoperative hyperalgesia. METHODS: Surgery- and pain-related variables were measured 24 and 48 h after the first and second total knee arthroplasties (TKAs) in postmenopausal patients undergoing 1-week-interval staged bilateral TKA. Two sets of saliva samples were consecutively collected from patients before (pre-T1) and 1 week after (pos

Cortisol excretion in high and low cynically hostile men.

Cynical hostility as measured by the Cook and Medley Hostility (Ho) Scale has been found in some studies to be associated with increased risk of life-threatening illness. Previous laboratory studies of cardiovascular reactivity have been consistent with the general hypothesis that increased physiological responsiveness is one possible mechanism underlying the association between hostility and health. The present study extended this previous research by evaluating urinary cortisol excretion during routine daily activities in a sample of high and low cynically hostile young men. Although high an

The Enduring Effects of Early Life Adversity on the Dysregulation of the Stress Awakening Response Among Dependent Tobacco Users.

INTRODUCTION: Adults with early life adversity (ELA) often exhibit stress system dysregulation and are prone to smoke for stress relief. This study, conducted as part of a larger project examining psychobiological stress responses in smokers, specifically focuses on the a priori research question of how ELA influences the cortisol awakening response (CAR) during acute tobacco withdrawal. AIMS AND METHODS: Using quasi-experimental design, adult daily (heavy) smokers were randomly assigned to either regular smoking (ad-lib) (N = 37) or 24-hour withdrawal (N = 55), and categorized into low or hi

Daily and trait rumination: diurnal cortisol patterns in adolescent girls.

Rumination is a maladaptive form of emotion regulation associated with psychopathology. Research with adults suggests that rumination covaries with diurnal cortisol rhythms, yet this has not been examined among adolescents. Here, we examine the day-to-day covariation between rumination and cortisol, and explore whether trait rumination is associated with alterations in diurnal cortisol rhythms among adolescent girls. Participants (N = 122) provided saliva samples 3 times per day over 3 days, along with daily reports of stress and rumination, questionnaires assessing trait rumination related to

Early and current life adversity: Past and present influences on maternal diurnal cortisol rhythms during pregnancy.

Stress during pregnancy affects maternal health and well-being, as well as the health and well-being of the next generation, in part through the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Although most studies have focused solely on proximal experiences (i.e., during the pregnancy) as sources of prenatal stress, there has been a recent surge in studies that examine maternal early life adversity as a source of stress system dysregulation during pregnancy. The current study of 178 pregnant women examined the association of economic and life stress experienced during two time periods (i.e., child

The effects of childhood sexual abuse on cortisol trajectories in pregnancy are moderated by current family functioning.

The goal of this study was to understand the roles of maternal history of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and current family functioning on the cortisol awakening response (CAR) in pregnancy. Participants were 185 pregnant women (ages 18-40) who completed items from the Adverse Childhood Experiences scale to measure child maltreatment history and the Family Assessment Device to measure current family functioning. Participants provided saliva samples at wake-up and 30min after wake-up at 25, 29, and 35 weeks gestation to measure CAR. A moderation effect was found such that participants with more s

Cortisol and testosterone jointly affect adolescent fairness.

Fairness is crucial in social interactions, shaping relationships and fostering cooperation, especially during adolescence. The developmental period, characterized by significant hormonal changes such as fluctuations in cortisol and testosterone levels, is pivotal for physiological and behavioral maturation. Despite the importance of the hormones, studies investigating their interaction effects on fairness within adolescent populations remain limited. The current study explored adolescent fairness development and how cortisol (bedtime basal cortisol and cortisol awakening response, CAR) and te

Physiological responses to acute psychosocial stress in women with menopausal insomnia.

INTRODUCTION: Insomnia disorder is a common sleep disorder and frequently emerges in the context of menopause, being associated with menopause-specific factors such as hot flashes and other psychosocial variables. Increased vulnerability to stress may also contribute to the development of insomnia in midlife women. Here, we aimed to investigate whether there are differences in physiological reactivity to acute psychosocial stress in women with menopausal insomnia compared with controls. METHODS: We investigated cortisol and heart rate [HR] responses to an acute experimental psychosocial stres
