Contact dermatitis of the vulva.

Contact dermatitis of the vulva is common, with irritant contact dermatitis occurring more frequently than allergic contact dermatitis. Patients with chronic vulvar dermatoses are at greater risk and should continually be reassessed for possible contact dermatitis. Comprehensive and specific questioning about hygiene practices and product use is necessary to elicit a history of contactant use. Patch testing is required to identify relevant contact allergens, the most common of which include medicaments, preservatives, and fragrances. Patient education and follow-up are essential in optimizing

Contact dermatitis of the vulva.

PURPOSE: We performed a dental survey of epilepsy patients to examine their oral health by statistical means and to provide a guide for the dental treatment of these patients. METHODS: We first set up four "dental" subgroups of epilepsy patients, based on the types of seizures, seizure frequency, and mental state. One hundred one patients underwent a survey concerning their dental, medical, and epilepsy histories, followed by a dental examination. Indexes quantifying oral hygiene, the number and condition of the remaining teeth, periodontium, and the degree of prosthetic treatment were measur

Contact dermatitis of the feet.

For a period of 12 years, 539 patients with shoe and dye contact dermatitis, were studied in 2 out-patient clinics in Lisbon. 75% of the patients had a bilateral recurrent dermatitis confined to the dorsa of the feet. PTBP resin and chromium proved to be the 2 principal allergens, but when lesions were localized to the soles, rubber additives, chiefly mercaptobenzothiazole, were the predominant ones. Allergy to dyes was found in 54 patients, most patients being allergic to PPD, p-aminoazobenzene and disperse orange 3. No patient was found to be allergic to the anthraquinone dye, disperse blue

Contact dermatitis of the eyelids.

A series of White women seen in a dermatological private practice were investigated for causes of dermatitis of the eyelids. Patch tests were done with test substances of known allergenicity used as ingredients of vehicles of cosmetics and medicaments and also with substances which could be conveyed to the eyelids by the fingertips from distant sites. Patients were also patch-tested and usage tests were done with cosmetics currently used on the face, nails and hair. The commonest cause of the contact allergic dermatitis of the eyelids was a variety of facial creams.

Contact sensitisation and allergic contact dermatitis: immunobiological mechanisms.

The dose-response relationships of the human immune system can be defined using the induction and elicitation of lymphocyte mediated allergic reactions to experimental contact sensitisers such as dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB). Five groups of healthy volunteers received a sensitising dose of DNCB applied to a 3 cm diameter circle on the volar forearm. Doses applied were 62.5 microg, 125 microg, 250 microg, 500 microg and 1,000 microg. Four weeks later a concentration series of 3.125 microg, 6.25 microg, 12.5 microg and 25 microg was applied to the upper inner arm on 1cm paper discs which were rem

Contact and systemic contact-type dermatitis to spices.

Contact and systemic contact-type dermatitis reactions to spices such as nutmeg, mace, cardamom, curry, cinnamon, and laurel may be rare but may well be overlooked. In our experience, patch testing with these spices "as is" is very useful; if there is a positive reaction, testing with dilutions is helpful. Scratch-chamber testing often leads to false-positive irritant reactions. As Hjorth and Niinimäki have pointed out, a positive test to balsam of Peru may indicate a spice allergy, but the absence of such a reaction does not rule it out. In all the cases in our experience, the careful draftin

Mango dermatitis: allergic contact dermatitis to Mangifera indica.

Mango Dermatitis' is the common term given to allergic contact dermatitis to the sap or skin of the fruit of Mangifera indica. Four patients presented with urticaria and eczematous rash following exposure to mangoes or the trees. Patch testing with diluted sap, crushed leaf, crushed stem and fruit skin was strongly positive.

Contact allergy to aeroallergens in children with atopic dermatitis: comparison with allergic contact dermatitis.

Immediate and delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity are believed to be implicated in the physiopathology atopic dermatitis (AD). The purpose of this study was to evaluate Type I and Type IV allergy to aeroallergens in children with AD. 59 children (mean age 5.2 years), presenting with AD according to Hanifin and Rajka's criteria, were skin tested (patch and corresponding prick tests) with common environmental aeroallergens and a restricted panel of the European standard series over a 1-year period. History and clinical data were carefully recorded using a standardized evaluation sheet; total and

Contact dermatitis in Nigeria. (III). Dermatitis of the neck.

Out of 545 consecutive contact dermatitis clinic patients, 73 (13%) had dermatitis of the neck of whom 18 (25%) were nickel positive. 7 had clothing dermatitis and 3 of them reacted to chromate in military uniforms. 5 patients were sensitised to perfume and 4 to medicaments used to treat existing dermatitis. 3 patients were sensitised to hair dyes. Nickel dermatitis, was clinically overdiagnosed, mainly due (for various reasons) to inability to make a firm diagnosis of atopy.

Contact allergen sensitivity in children with contact dermatitis.

OBJECTIVE: Irritant contact dermatitis and Allergic contact dermatitis are two distinct forms of contact dermatitis. Allergic contact dermatitis is a Type 4 (delayed-type) hypersensitivity reaction that occurs during subsequent contact with an allergen to a previously sensitized person. The number of allergens that cause allergic contact dermatitis is increasing day by day. Although it is not the gold standard for the detection of these allergens, skin patch testing is a very helpful method. This study aimed to determine the most common contact allergens in the pediatric age group. MATERIAL A

Chronic, irritant contact dermatitis: mechanisms, variables, and differentiation from other forms of contact dermatitis.

Irritant dermatitis is an eczematous reaction to toxic chemicals contacting the skin. The mechanisms by which various chemicals elicit dermatitis are multiple. Strong irritants quickly elicit signs and symptoms of dermatitis, but weak irritants may not. Chronic cumulative exposure to weak irritants can elicit dermatitis which may mimic allergic contact dermatitis and mislead the physician and patient with respect to cause and preventative strategy. The skins of different people vary in susceptibilities to irritation. Susceptibility is also influenced by chemical properties, vehicles, concentra

Can Atopic Dermatitis and Allergic Contact Dermatitis Coexist?

Due to their seemingly divergent immune pathways, it previously was thought that atopic dermatitis (AD) and allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) could not occur together. However, novel research suggests that the 2 conditions may be more closely related than previously understood. Herein, we discuss the overlapping relationship between AD and ACD and review the evidence for their coexistence. We also review management strategies to consider for patients with dual diagnoses of AD and ACD.

Rutin suppresses atopic dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) and allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a common allergic inflammatory skin disease caused by a combination of eczematous, scratching, pruritus and cutaneous sensitization with allergens. The aim of our study was to examine whether rutin, a predominant flavonoid having anti-inflammatory and antioxidative potential, modulates AD and ACD symptoms. We established an atopic dermatitis model in BALB/c mice by repeated local exposure of house dust mite (Dermatophagoides farinae) extract (DFE) and 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) to the ears. In addition, 2,4-dinitroflourobenze
