The Expert Panel for Cosmetic Ingredient Safety (Panel) considered whether the safety of PEG Stearate ingredients as used in cosmetics should be reassessed. These ingredients are reported to function primarily as surfactants and emollients. The Panel reviewed newly available animal and human data related to these ingredients. The Panel concluded that the PEG Stearates are safe as cosmetic ingredients in the practices of use and concentrations described in the safety assessment.

Pressure ulcer develops as a result of many factors, primarily pressure, tensile forces and ischemia with immobility and incontinence. Targeted and properly designed preventive measures reduce the incidence and complications of pressure ulcers, among which the most common are infections. An important preventive measure is protection of the surrounding skin before the application of wound dressings. Skin changes dictate the use of emollients and topical therapy according to dermatological status.

Skin barrier function around the ulcer is usually impaired. Additionally, the skin can be atrophic, thinned, without skin adnexa and elastic fibers, dry and prone to callus formation. Skin barrier function can be improved with regular use of emollients. It is important to differentiate erythema around the ulcer induced by hypostatic eczema from cellulitis or erysipelas and from allergic or toxic contact dermatitis or eczema vulgaris because therapy is completely different.

Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease with a significant impact on quality of life. Psoriasis affects about 3% of the US population. Psoriasis is caused by an interaction between genetic and environmental triggers. Lifestyle modification and topical therapies such as emollients, topical corticosteroids, vitamin D analogues, and calcineurin inhibitors are used for limited disease. More severe psoriasis may require systemic therapy with available oral or biologic therapy.

A 63-year-old man presented with erythroderma, peripheral blood eosinophilia, elevated serum IgE levels, and a history of dermatitis, furunculosis, and a cold abscess. Hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome is a rare, multisystem disorder that is characterized by cutaneous and sinopulmonary infections, dermatitis, and elevated serum IgE levels. Traditional therapy includes good skin care, antibiotics for skin and pulmonary infections, incision and drainage of abscesses, and emollients plus topical glucocorticoids for dermatitis.

One of the more disruptive symptoms of eczema is itching. Traditionally, it is treated with emollients, topical corticosteroids or oral antihistamines. A topical form of the antidepressant doxepin (doxepin 5% cream; Xepin-Bioglan) is now marketed for "the relief of pruritus associated with eczema" in adults and children aged over 12 years. Here, we review the efficacy and safety of this product and assess its role in the management of eczema.

Allergic contact dermatitis is a common and under-recognized phenomenon in patients with recalcitrant wounds. There are many possible causes including components of numerous agents used to treat these wounds, such as topical antibiotics, adhesives in dressings, emollients, emulsifiers, and self-administered medicaments. Considering allergic contact dermatitis when a wound is recalcitrant is important in the management of wounds. Etiologic agents, controversies, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of contact sensitivity are discussed.

Dermoscopy is a noninvasive technique to assess skin architecture. A pilot study was conducted using polarized dermoscopy as a tool to monitor the pediatric skin barrier. Ten pediatric patients (age range, 1-14 years) with mild to moderate atopic dermatitis (AD), ichthyosis vulgaris (IV), and/or keratosis pilaris (KP) participated in a 4-week clinical trial. After a week of emollient usage alone, a mid-potency topical corticosteroid cream was added twice daily if necessary to treat erythema, dermatitis, or pruritus. The participants were assessed at weeks 0, 1, and 4 using the eczema area and

Sjögren-Larsson syndrome is an inborn error of metabolism with its primary clinical manifestations being congenital ichthyosis, spastic hemiplegia or quadriplegia, and moderate to severe mental retardation. Definitive diagnosis can be made by measuring fatty aldehyde dehydrogenase activity in cultured skin fibroblasts. Treatment of dermatologic manifestations is best accomplished with topical emollients and frequent bathing or showering. Some evidence supports medium-chain triglyceride diets and oral retinoids. These modalities, however, remain controversial.

Background/Objectives: The aim of our study was to investigate the effectiveness of personalized training on skin protection associated with the regular use of ceramide-containing cream (CC) versus other creams (OC) for improving hand contact dermatitis. Methods: We performed a double-center randomized trial that enrolled workers with hand dermatitis. All workers received personalized training. The intervention was 3 times per day application of the study emollient. The control arm used an emollient of choice without ceramide, as needed. The primary outcome was improvement in hand dermatitis a

Twenty-two patients were treated with desoximetasone emollient cream 0.25% twice daily without occlusion for 6 months. Patients applied the medication to approximately one-third of their body over psoriatic lesions. Corticosteroid plasma cortisol values decreased to below normal limits in nine patients before the 6-month study was terminated. In four of these the plasma cortisol spontaneously returned to normal despite therapy; in four other patients, however, the plasma cortisol was still suppressed at the end of 5 months of continual therapy but returned to normal within 7 days of discontinu

BACKGROUND: Topical corticosteroids have long been the cornerstone in thetreatment of steroid-responsive dermatoses. Despite the effectiveness of these formulations, there is a misperception that drugs delivered via ointments are more potent than those delivered via other vehicles. Potency, however, is a complex function of the physical and chemical properties of both the active ingredient and its vehicle. Studies have determined that newer vehicles (eg, lotions), particularly those in the super-high-potency class, not only heighten the ability of the active ingredient to penetrate skin but al

Norwegian (crusted) scabies is a rare and extreme manifestation of scabies that can be observed mainly among immunosuppressed patients. Due to the high number of scabies mites present in each lesion, crusted scabies symptoms are much more intense than in usual scabies and it is thus highly contagious. A case study of a child with Down syndrome and Norwegian scabies who shows a good response to a treatment combining keratolytics, emollients, ivermectin and topical scabicides is described.

Our study took place in the region of the Copahue Volcano in the Andes Mountain range, 1900 m above sea level. Fifty-five patients who came to the Copahue Thermal Basin Complex (Neuquén, Argentina) for treatment of psoriasis vulgaris were clinically evaluated for participation in this study. Thermal products--waters, mud, and/or algae--were the only therapeutic agents used, except for bland emollients for xerosis. Treatment for brief periods (10 +/- 3 days) resulted in notable improvement.

In several cutaneous disorders, pruritus is both the primary symptom and the cause of perpetuating factor. Therefore, one focus of therapy should be on treating pruritus and thereby preventing or aiding in the resolution of skin lesions. Several treatment options are available, including nonpharmacologic methods; use of emollients, tar preparations, and other topical agents; ultraviolet B therapy; and use of oral antihistamines or corticosteroids. A new topical tricyclic agent is now available that adds a promising therapeutic approach.

One percent metronidazole in an emollient cream base was compared with 250 mg oral tetracycline taken twice daily for the treatment of seventy-five patients with rosacea. After eight weeks of treatment there was no statistically significant difference between the results of the two treatments. Tetracycline did have a more rapid onset of effect on papules and pustules. Both treatments were well tolerated.

UNLABELLED: Dermatitis from the use of 2-Octyl cyanoacrylate liquid wound closure adhesives after scoliosis surgery is believed to be allergic reactions to some components of wound closure systems. Previous exposure to the closure system can increase the risk of allergic dermatitis with subsequent exposures. Two cases of allergic contact dermatitis in pediatric patients who underwent posterior spine fusion surgery using 2-Octyl cyanoacrylate wound adhesive are reported here. Successful management can include a protocol developed of topical corticosteroids, mupirocin, emollient ointment, and an
