Temporomandibular disorders assessment: medicolegal considerations in the evidence-based era.

Summary  Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a frequent finding in cases of facial trauma or dental malpractice, and legal claims for TMD damage have been increased over the years. Temporomandibular disorders assessment in the medical legal setting is complicated by the peculiarities of these disorders, whose symptoms are heterogeneous, fluctuant, and recognise a multifactorial origin. A systematic Medline search in the National Library of Medicine's PubMed database pointed out that, despite the medical legal aspects of the dental profession are gaining a growing attention, there is a paucit

Magnifying loupes in modern dental practice: an update.

UNLABELLED: There are three principal reasons for adopting magnifying loupes for operative dentistry: to enhance visualization of fine detail, to compensate for the loss of near vision (presbyopia) and to ensure maintenance of correct posture. The wearing of loupes is becoming an accepted norm amongst qualified practitioners and increasingly in the undergraduate population. However, further research is required before evidence-based recommendations can be made about their effectiveness in achieving the three principles. Compared to the medical literature, there is a paucity of studies on the u

A new curriculum framework for clinical prevention and population health, with a review of clinical caries prevention teaching in U.S. and Canadian dental schools.

To fulfill the Healthy People 2010 Objective 1.7, "Increase the proportion of . . . health professional training schools whose basic curriculum for health care providers includes the core competencies in health promotion and disease prevention," the Healthy People Curriculum Task Force has developed a curriculum framework for clinical prevention and population health for all the health professions. This framework has four components: 1) evidence base for practice; 2) clinical preventive services, including health promotion; 3) health systems and health policy; and 4) community aspects of pract

Multidisciplinary team for patients with neurocutaneous syndromes: The little discussed importance of dentistry.

Neurocutaneous syndromes comprise a heterogeneous group of congenital or hereditary conditions that are known to be associated with the risk of different disorders and complications. Two of the most common neurocutaneous syndromes are Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC). Although there appears to be a general consensus on the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in managing these cases, there is still very little emphasis in discussions addressed in the literature on the role of dentistry in accordance with the perspective of comprehensive care. Evidence-b

Evidence provided for the use of oscillating instruments in restorative dentistry: A systematic review.

Oscillating diamond instruments are considered gentle sources for the removal of demineralized tooth hard tissues and the preparation of cavity angles and margins needed in minimally invasive dentistry. However, there is a question if literature provides enough evidence for their efficacy in restorative dentistry procedures. A literature search until May 2016 was conducted, using PubMed, Scopus, and The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases. The quality of the studies was assessed using the recommendation of the Oxford Centre for Evidence-based Medicine. Fifty-five studies w

Evidence-based review of clinical studies on trauma.

Clinical studies on trauma represent an important example of the ethical limitations of clinical research because patients cannot be randomized to "trauma" and "no trauma" groups. Instead, this important area of research includes preclinical studies, permitting more comprehensive experimental designs, case series/retrospective studies, and randomized studies in which the intervention focuses on treatment delivered after occurrence of dental trauma.

[Geriatric aspects of teaching maxillofacial surgery and surgical dentistry.].

Competence-based approach plays an important role in the training of a modern doctor. Considering that the strategy of dental care for older age groups is determined not only by the demographic situation and its development, but also by the justified need for effective dental care, it is important to implement the teaching of gerontostomatology in a medical university based on the results of evidence-based medicine and a personalized approach. The aim of the work was to develop a methodology for teaching geriatric aspects according to the curriculum of a specialist in the discipline of maxillo

The role of evidence in formulating public health programs to prevent oral disease and promote oral health in the United States.

A major goal of federal, state, and local health agencies is to reduce the burden of disease in populations. To obtain sufficient resources to achieve this goal, they must document the importance of the health problems addressed and the impact and efficiency of programs. CDC supports core activities within state and local health departments to promote health and prevent disease. This presentation will focus on the need for evidence to document the effectiveness of these activities that include routine monitoring of oral health, risk behaviors, and other factors; implementing effective populati
