Research on the treatment of eating disorders has focused primarily on cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and, more recently, interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT). Numerous studies have shown that CBT is helpful in reducing symptoms of bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder. In addition, CBT has been found to be superior or comparable to other psychotherapies in reducing bulimic symptoms. Preliminary findings indicate that CBT and IPT produce similar results at follow-up for bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder. Antidepressant medications are also useful in the treatment of bulimia nervos…

BACKGROUND: We aimed to synthesize the available evidence on the relative efficacy and acceptability of specific treatments for persistent d … r fluoxetine. Sertraline (0.57) and amisulpride (0.53) showed a lower dropout rate than imipramine. Interpersonal psychotherapy with medication outperformed medication alone in chronic major depression but not in dysthymia. Individuals with co-occurring borderline personality disorder and narcissistic personality disorder often present with severe emotional dysregulation, interpersonal instability, identity disturbance, and entrenched patterns of shame, vulnerability, and defensiveness that challenge traditional treatment approaches. This article describes the treatment model of the Gunderson Residence, a highly specialized residential program that provides intensive, milieu-based care for individuals with complex personality pathology through an integrated, evidence-based framework. Grounded in empirically suppo

Objective: This study examines whether, in panic-focused psychodynamic psychotherapy (PFPP), interpretations of conflicts that underlie anxiety (panic-focused or PF-interpretations) are specifically associated with subsequent panic disorder (PD) symptom improvement, over and above the provision of non-symptom-focused interpretations. Method: Technique use in Sessions 2 and 10 of a 24-session PFPP protocol was assessed for the 65 patients with complete outcome data randomized to PFPP in a two-site trial of psychotherapies for PD. Sessions were rated in 15-min segments for therapists' use of PF-

Psychological changes may precede the neuropsychological symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In addition, early stages of AD are often accompanied by a depressive disorder. Therefore, we reasoned whether AD patients might profit from psychotherapy. The aim would be to alleviate anxiety, discouragement, and inactivation of patients suffering from the early stages of AD. According to preliminary experience with a small number of treated cases, interpersonal psychotherapy, modified for application in "late-life" (IPT-LL), has been found to be useful for the treatment of AD patients. The case of…

BACKGROUND: Depression is a serious disorder in childhood and adolescence. Affected children and adolescents show significant impairments in various aspects of life. Studies on the effectiveness or efficacy of psychotherapy in depressed children and adolescents are qualitatively very heterogeneous and reveal small effect sizes. There is thus a need to better tailor psychotherapy approaches to these age groups to improve outcomes like parent-child relationship, symptomatology, or quality of life. To address this gap, we designed a modular, individualized treatment program for children and adole

Good Psychiatric Management (GPM) is a generalist clinical management approach for borderline personality disorder that incorporates common ingredients of good standard care for any psychiatric diagnosis with what works from prevailing specialist psychotherapies. Similar to all validated therapies for BPD, it relies on a specified formulation of the disorder' symptoms as arising from interpersonal hypersensitivity, to dynamically describe typical patterns of daily self- and interpersonal issues that drive the instability that defines the general personality dysfunction characteristic of the di

Cumulative childhood trauma (CCT) can lead to long-lasting consequences, such as difficulties in emotion regulation, which, in turn, can affect romantic relationships. While problems with emotion regulation are associated with poorer relationship outcomes, few studies have examined these associations among couples seeking relationship psychotherapy, despite an estimated 80% of individuals in such psychotherapy having experienced CCT. The present study investigated the intermediary role of emotion regulation difficulties in the association between CCT and relationship distress in 199 couples se

This article presents a frequent dilemma of treatment-seeking mothers suffering from complex posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that is related to exposure to maltreatment and other forms of interpersonal violence. Namely, that complex PTSD symptoms, including dissociative states in mothers that are triggered by normative child emotion dysregulation, aggression, and distress during early childhood, hinder the development of a productive psychotherapeutic process in more traditional psychodynamic psychotherapies for mothers and children. The article thus presents clinician-assisted videofeedb

This study investigated three aspects of patients' interpersonal functioning as predictors of outcome for two forms of group psychotherapy for complicated grief. Patients presented with a variety of death losses and met criteria for complicated grief. The three aspects of interpersonal functioning were the patient's (1) attachment to the lost person, (2) quality of object relations (QOR), and (3) level of recent social role functioning. A more secure attachment to the lost person and better social role functioning were associated with more favorable outcome in both forms of therapy. In additio

Historical approaches of psychotherapy for depression are contrasted with current psychotherapeutic strategies. Now more strategies are focused, structured, time-limited, observable, testable, researchable and data based. The following depressive syndromes are reviewed in terms of the literature that demonstrates the effectiveness of psychotherapy: major depressive disorder, bipolar depressive disorder, depression associated with medical illness such as cancer, myocardial infarction and stroke, resistant depression post-traumatic stress disorder, grief reactions and depression during adolescen

OBJECTIVES: Bipolar disorder requires psychiatric medications, but even guideline-concordant treatment fails to bring many patients to remission or keep them euthymic. To address this gap, researchers have developed adjunctive psychotherapies. The purpose of this paper is to critically review the evidence for the efficacy of manualized psychosocial interventions for bipolar disorder.
METHODS: We conducted a search of the literature to examine recent (2007-present), randomized controlled studies of the following psychotherapy interventions for bipolar disorder: psychoeducation (PE), cognitive

The authors conducted a series of multiple regression analyses of data from depressed patients. They found that 8 factors consistently predicted treatment response: a lower initial level of distress, imipramine treatment, a positive attitude toward group psychotherapy, and a good employment history predicted lower posttreatment distress levels; estrogen maintenance treatment was related to better response to diazepam, and a low level of intelligence predicted better response to both diazepam and imipramine; and a low initial level of interpersonal sensitivity and a significant other's having a

Gossip, a phenomenon as old as history itself, is reflected upon in terms of its need-fulfilling functions for persons and social groups. It is seen as one of the sources of knowledge about life that has potentials for wisdom, and its interpersonal and intrapsychic functions are shown to have similarities to many salient functions of psychotherapy.

The purpose of this narrative review was to examine the efficacy and effectiveness of psychotherapy for older adults with depressive disorders or clinically significant depressive symptoms; describe extensions of psychotherapy across populations, settings, providers, and modalities; review mechanisms and predictors of treatment response; and consider future directions. Numerous systematic reviews and meta-analyses demonstrate that psychotherapy benefits many depressed older adults, with the strongest evidence for a variety of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) approaches, including problem-sol

BACKGROUND: General interpersonal problems and distress are transdiagnostic features across the psychopathology spectrum and relate to reduced quality of life, greater emotional symptom severity, and worse outcomes following psychotherapy. Identifying within-person dynamic factors influencing interpersonal distress could therefore advance clinical formulation and intervention, benefiting a large number of patients.
METHODS: Based on a four-wave longitudinal study, we used latent growth modelling to investigate whether metacognitive beliefs, the key mechanism of psychological dysfunction in th

INTRODUCTION: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) remains a major therapeutic challenge, given incomplete response to first-line psychotherapies and limited treatment accessibility. Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation (NIBS), particularly repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) and transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), has emerged as promising interventions.
METHODS: This narrative review provides an updated overview of recent evidence on NIBS in BPD, focusing on: new tDCS studies, NIBS to improve interpersonal dysfunction and social cognition, the combination between NIBS
