Stressful life events exhibit complex patterns of associations with depressive symptoms in two population-based samples using network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Stressful life events (SLEs) constitute key risk factors for depression. However, previous studies examining associations between SLEs and depression have been limited by focusing on single events, combining events into broad categories, and/or ignoring interrelationships between events in statistical analyses. Network analysis comprises a set of statistical methods well-suited for assessing relationships between multiple variables and can help surpass several limitations of previous studies. METHODS: We applied network analysis using mixed graphical models combining two large-sca

Moving forward with a culturally inclusive PTSD Criterion A: Commentary on Marx et al. (2023).

In response to Marx et al.'s (2023) article, "The PTSD Criterion A debate: A brief history, current status, and recommendations for moving forward," this commentary offers agreement with the recommendation to conduct population-based studies to inform future Criterion A changes. However, to fully address the debate as to whether Criterion A should be expanded, limited, eliminated, or remain unchanged, it is critical that future population-based research focus on cultural inclusivity and the addition of potentially traumatic experiences that are collective and/or cumulative versus individual an

The Association Between Immune-Related Conditions Across the Life-Course and Provoked Vulvodynia.

Vulvodynia, impacts up to 8% of women by age 40, and is hypothesized to manifest through an altered immune-inflammatory response. To test this hypothesis, we identified all women born in Sweden between 1973 and 1996 diagnosed with localized provoked vulvodynia (N76.3) and/or vaginismus (N94.2 or F52.5) between 2001 and 2018. We matched each case to two women from the same birth year with no vulvar pain ICD codes. As a proxy for immune dysfunction, we used Swedish Registry data to capture 1) immunodeficiencies, 2) single organ and multiorgan autoimmune conditions, 3) allergy and atopies, and 4)

Signatures of life course socioeconomic conditions in brain anatomy.

Socioeconomic status (SES) plays a significant role in health and disease. At the same time, early-life conditions affect neural function and structure, suggesting the brain may be a conduit for the biological embedding of SES. Here, we investigate the brain anatomy signatures of SES in a large-scale population cohort aged 45-85 years. We assess both gray matter morphometry and tissue properties indicative of myelin content. Higher life course SES is associated with increased volume in several brain regions, including postcentral and temporal gyri, cuneus, and cerebellum. We observe more wides

Proposing network analysis for early life adversity: An application on life event data.

Commonly used methods for modelling early life adversity (e.g., sum-scores, latent class or trajectory approaches, single-adversity approaches, and factor-analytical approaches) have not been able to capture the complex nature of early life adversity. We propose network analysis as an alternative way of modelling early life adversity (ELA). Our aim was to construct a network of fourteen adverse events (AEs) that occurred before the age of 16 in the TRacking Adolescents Individual Lives Survey (TRAILS, N = 1029). To show how network analysis can provide insight into why AEs are associated, we c

Life Experiences of Older Men Living Alone With Depression.

As the percentage of older adults living alone increases, social interest has been drawn to this physically, financially, and socially vulnerable group. The purpose of the current study was to gain a deeper understanding of the life experiences of older men with depression who live alone. Eight community-dwelling men aged ≥65 years who lived alone in Korea and had depression were enrolled in this study. Data were collected via individual in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. Four themes emerged from analysis: Life Trapped in the Traditional Masculine Ideology, Weakening Min

Impact of COVID-19 on Life Experiences of Essential Workers Attending a Dental Testing Facility.

OBJECTIVES: 1) To compare the impact of COVID-19 on the life experiences of essential workers attending a COVID-19 antibody testing clinic at a dental school. 2) To compare responses of dental, non-dental health care, and non-health care essential workers. 3) To assess acceptability/satisfaction of testing done in a dental setting. METHOD: A total of 984 participants completed a self-administered online questionnaire. RESULTS: Over 90% were healthy (i.e., not in a high-risk health-related group for COVID-19), did not have COVID-19 symptoms within 30 d, and always/frequently engaged in preven

From Physical Violence to Intensified Economic Abuse: Transitions Between the Types of IPV Over Survivors' Life Courses.

Scholars of intimate partner violence (IPV) cite the various forms of IPV perpetrated by violent male partners to establish their coercive control over women. This scholarship emphasizes IPV's long-term destructive effects on survivors' lives. However, until recently, the role of the state in the relationship between different manifestations of IPV has received little attention, leaving hazy the meaning of absent formal legislation. An opportunity to clarify the significance of this condition lies in Israel, where economic abuse is not yet recognized as grounds for legal and social sanctions.

Moderating Effects of Gender on Outcomes Associated with Stressful Life Events Among Elementary School-Age Youth.

Stressful life events have been associated with child and adolescent maladjustment, including elevated levels of aggression and anxiety (Attar et al. in J Clin Child Psychol 23:391-400, 1994; Fox et al. in J Adolesc 33:43-54, 2010). However, gender specific outcomes associated with stressful life events among elementary school-age youth are less known. Accordingly, the current study examined the role of gender in the associations between stressful life events and anxiety and proactive and reactive aggression. Participants included 294 elementary school-age children (M = 8.71, SD = 1.17, 50.7 %

[Examination of rumination and meaning making in stressful events: the influence of subjective evaluation of events and personal characteristics].

This study examined the factors that influence meaning making and rumination related to stressful events. Six hypothetical scenarios were used, all of which were contextualized stressful events. Participants (N = 779) completed a questionnaire about one of the six scenarios, which assessed the possibility of preventing the event, the probability of the event occurring, the perceived threat of the event, the frequency of rumination, and meaning making. They completed a scale that assessed self-rumination and self-reflection as a way of thinking, and a scale that assessed executive function. Exe

Lasting personality pathology following exposure to catastrophic trauma in adults: systematic review.

BACKGROUND: By definition, personality disorders (PDs) are evident in late childhood and adolescence, but evidence for personality pathology occurring after adolescence is unclear. AIM: We aimed to review extant literature on personality change following exposure to catastrophic trauma in adults in order to identify the prevalence and clinical features of any long-term personality pathology. METHOD: Relevant studies were identified by searching three bibliographic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE and PsychINFO) from inception to November 2011 using terms related to personality and trauma. RESULTS

[Dissociative symptoms and sleep].

There is a widespread view among psychiatrists that dissociative experiences such as depersonalisation, derealisation, absorption, and psychogenic amnesia have a traumatic etiology. This view is subjected to a critical evaluation. We also discuss an alternative interpretation namely that dissociative experiences are caused by a labile sleep-wake rhythm. We evaluated this alternative view in two exploratory studies. In study 1 we looked at the relationship between the Dissociative Experience Scale (DES) and the Iowa Sleep Experiences Survey (ISES) and in study 2, we checked this relationship wh

Suicide in adolescents: using life charts to understand the suicidal process.

BACKGROUND: A greater understanding of the pathways which lead young people to take their lives is important in ensuring that prevention strategies and health service delivery are as effective as possible. In this study we examined the duration, development and characteristics of the suicidal process in young people who ultimately died by suicide. METHODS: Life charts of psychological autopsy information from multiple informants were used to identify the suicidal process among 27 young people who died by suicide. RESULTS: Life charts were generated for 27 young people who died by suicide, of

[Psychopathology of disasters].

Psychiatric reactions to disasters have not received sufficient attention because it is widely accepted that human beings can endure any kind of extreme stress. A disaster is the consequence of an extraordinary event that destroys goods, kills people, produces physical or psychological harm but, above all, which overcomes the coping possibilities of the social group. Reactions to stress occur in stages, each one characterised by a specific psychological mechanisms: pre-impact, alarm, impact, recoil, post-impact and reconciliation. The reactions can be acute or chronic, among them the post-trau

Psychosocial factors in the onset of eating disorders: responses to life-events and difficulties.

A number of studies have proposed a role for stress in the onset of eating disorders. Initially the focus was on the life-events and difficulties themselves. However, the aim of this study was to examine the coping and support elicited in response to the crises that precipitate onset of eating disorders. Thirty-two women who had developed an eating disorder within four years of presentation were administered semi-structured interviews asking about events and difficulties in the year before onset, as well as how they coped and the support they received. Twenty women with no history of eating di

Correlates of anxiety in psychiatrically hospitalized children and their parents.

The authors separated 100 children hospitalized in a child psychiatry service into three groups according to their level of anxiety on the basis of the responses of the children and their parents to diagnostic interviews. Differentiation of the groups of children was validated by independent test instruments. Results of tests administered to the children and their parents revealed significant relationships between anxiety in the adults and in the children. In addition, parents of anxious children reported more SCL-90-R symptoms as well as more negative family relations than parents of nonanxio

[Characteristics of self-destructive acts of patients from the Acute Poisoning Clinic].

The study carried out in 100 patients who attempted suicide by taking narcotics and antidepressants revealed that at the moment of poisoning the patients did not have any will to die. On the contrary, they reported they were concerned by a will to have their social situation improved. It can be induced both by the circumstances of drug taking (time, drug dose, presence of other people) and the reports of the patients themselves. They did not regard themselves as willing to commit suicide. However the fact that they were unable to solve their problems in a socially acceptable way indicates that
