Assessing the causal effects of ozone precursors, meteorological variables, and urbanization-related factors on ground-level ozone across China.

Ozone pollution has become increasingly severe in China, particularly in megacity clusters. To comprehensively assess the impacts of environmental factors on ozone, this study employs Convergent cross mapping and Geographical Convergent Cross Mapping models to quantify the causal effects of ozone precursors, meteorological variables, and urbanization-related factors on ground-level ozone across China. Results show that the causal effects of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and formaldehyde (HCHO) on ozone varied with the HCHO/NO2 ratio, peaking under VOC-limited regimes; NO2 generally exerts a stronger

Valley-Forecast: Forecasting Coccidioidomycosis incidence via enhanced LSTM models trained on comprehensive meteorological data.

Coccidioidomycosis (cocci), or more commonly known as Valley Fever, is a fungal infection caused by Coccidioides species that poses a significant public health challenge, particularly in the semi-arid regions of the Americas, with notable prevalence in California and Arizona. Previous epidemiological studies have established a correlation between cocci incidence and regional weather patterns, indicating that climatic factors influence the fungus's life cycle and subsequent disease transmission. This study hypothesizes that Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and extended Long Short-Term Memory (xLST

Assessing the relationship between malaria incidence levels and meteorological factors using cluster-integrated regression.

This paper introduces a novel approach to modeling malaria incidence in Nigeria by integrating clustering strategies with regression modeling and leveraging meteorological data. By decomposing the datasets into multiple subsets using clustering techniques, we increase the number of explanatory variables and elucidate the role of weather in predicting different ranges of incidence data. Our clustering-integrated regression models, accompanied by optimal barriers, provide insights into the complex relationship between malaria incidence and well-established influencing weather factors such as rai

Analysis of effects of meteorological variables on dengue incidence in Bangladesh using VAR and Granger causality approach.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is a serious public health issue in Bangladesh, where its incidence rises with the monsoon. Meteorological variables are believed to be responsible factors among others. Therefore, this study examines the effects of meteorological variables (temperature, rainfall, and humidity) on dengue incidence in Bangladesh. While previous studies have examined the relationship between dengue and meteorological variables using single model approaches, this study employs advanced econometric techniques to capture dynamic interactions. Furthermore, in the case of Bangladesh, this typ

The impact of meteorological parameters on the scrub typhus incidence in Baoshan City, western Yunnan, China.

BACKGROUND: Scrub typhus has become widespread across various regions in China in recent decades, causing a considerable burden on residents. While meteorological variables significantly impact the spread of scrub typhus, there is insufficient quantitative evidence illustrating this association in known high-endemic areas. METHODS: A distributed lag non-linear model was applied to explore the relationship between meteorological parameters and scrub typhus incidence from 2010 to 2019 in Baoshan City, western Yunnan Province, China. RESULTS: High monthly mean (20°C) and maximum (30°C) temperat

Correlation between meteorological factors and vitamin D status under different season.

Pregnant women with low vitamin D levels tend to have poor clinical outcomes. Meteorological factors were associated with vitamin D. Here, we aimed to study the current status of 25-Hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations in pregnant women in Kunshan city and investigate the meteorological factors associated with 25(OH)D levels under different seasons. The correlation between meteorological factors and 25(OH)D levels was estimated by cross-correlation analysis and multivariate logistic regression. A restrictive cubic spline method was used to estimate the non-linear relationship. From 2015

The Impact of Meteorological Parameters and Seasonal Changes on Reporting Patients with Selected Cardiovascular Diseases to Hospital Emergency Departments: A Pilot Study.

(1) Background: So far, research results have confirmed the relationship between heat and cold stress, the fluctuations in atmospheric pressure and high relative humidity, and the vulnerability of patients with so-called "weather-dependent" diseases which could lead to death. This study aimed to determine the meteorological parameters, their interactions, and the seasonal changes of the most significant factors in predicting the number of patients reporting to the Emergency Departments (EDs) in Poznań (Poland) during 2019. (2) Methods: The analysis included the meteorological parameters and da

Effect of temperature and air pressure on the incidence of Bell's palsy in Hangzhou: a distributed lag non-linear analysis.

The etiology of Bell's palsy (BP) is currently unknown, and the findings from previous studies examining the association between seasonal or meteorological factors and BP have been inconsistent. This research aims to clarify this relationship by analyzing a larger dataset and employing appropriate statistical methods. Data from 5387 patients with BP treated at Zhejiang Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, from May 1, 2018, to June 30, 2023, was gathered. We assessed the temporal distribution of meteorological factors and the incidence of BP across

The influence of climate on the epidemiology of bartonellosis in Ancash, Peru.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between bartonellosis and selected climatic factors during the time periods 1983-1988 and 1995-99, which included two events of the El Niño phenomenon (1986-88, 1997-98), and to identify a reliable climate parameter to be used as an alert indicator for bartonellosis outbreaks in Ancash. The study site was Ancash and its province Carhuaz, Peru. Time-series cross-correlation analysis was used to assess the association between bartonellosis and climate parameters. A higher, almost 4-fold, monthly bartonellosis incidence risk in Ancash departme

Sferics and headache: a prospective study.

Sferics are low frequency, low intensity electromagnetic pulses radiating from distant meteorological events and other yet unknown sources. It has been hypothesized that sferics are part of the purported sensitivity to weather changes reported by headache sufferers. We tested this proposal. Patients (migraine and/or tension headache) enrolled in a randomized clinical trial gave daily headache data (intensity, frequency, duration of headache) for at least 18 weeks. Concurrently, a sferics measurement station in the vicinity of the patients recorded frequency and intensity of sferics. Usable hea

Seasonal abundance of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae) at an endemic focus of visceral leishmaniasis in Colombia.

Ecological studies on the sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva) were conducted during 1990-1993 in a small rural community in Colombia where American visceral leishmaniasis is endemic. Standardized weekly sand fly collections made from pigpens and natural resting sites displayed a bimodal annual abundance cycle, with a small peak occurring in October-November and a larger one in April-May. Time series analysis was employed to quantify the associations between sand fly abundance and weather factors (temperature, relative humidity, and rainfall). In addition to a prominent 6-mo cycle. Thyroid and adrenal responses to the dynamics of meteorologic factors.

Endocrine reactions are essential elements in bodily adjustment to external environment. The study of the endocrine-hormonal mechanisms of adjustment to the dynamic influences of natural factors has a place of its own in contemporary biology. The endocrine functions, like any other physiologic processes, do not take place with constant intensity. The variations occur rhythmically connected to various time-intervals: light-darkness, moon phases, the multi-annual succession of astronomical phenomena, seasonal dynamics of the climate-meteorological complex, a.s.o. This paper deals with the result

Atmospheric formation and fates of toxic ambient air pollutants.

Concentrations of de novo toxicants in ambient air are typically in the ppb range, compared to ppm for occupational exposures. Despite this, some species such as ozone, alone or in combination with other pollutants, have significant health impacts, especially on populations such as children, the elderly, and asthmatics. Reaction products in the atmosphere include gases such as ozone and nitric acid, as well as polar organic species such as aldehydes, acids, hydroperoxides, and peroxides. A brief discussion of indoor vs outdoor levels of several acids/toxicants is included. Emphasis is on homog

The Bayesian aerosol release detector: an algorithm for detecting and characterizing outbreaks caused by an atmospheric release of Bacillus anthracis.

Early detection and characterization of outdoor aerosol releases of Bacillus anthracis is an important problem. As health departments and other government agencies address this problem with newer methods of surveillance such as environmental surveillance through the BioWatch program and enhanced medical surveillance, they increasingly have newer types of surveillance data available. However, existing methods for the statistical analysis of surveillance data do not account for recent meteorological conditions, as human analysts did in the case of the Sverdlovsk anthrax outbreak of 1979 to deter

Are Meteorological Conditions within the First Trimester of Pregnancy Associated with the Risk of Severe Pre-Eclampsia?

BACKGROUND: Severe pre-eclampsia (SPE) is the second cause of maternal death in developed countries. The literature suggests different risk factors for early- and late-onset pre-eclampsia. SPE is usually related to the early-onset type. Pre-eclampsia rate exhibits seasonal variation. However, the weather-SPE association is still unknown. We examined the associations between maternal exposure to meteorological parameters after conception and SPE. METHODS: From 2008 to 2011, all deliveries of women living in the Yvelines area, France, have been prospectively registered. Meteorological measureme

Unraveling complex interactions of meteorological factors and sulfur dioxide on other infectious diarrhea: evidence from a subtropical city.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of other infectious diarrhea (OID) is rising, imposing a significant medical burden. While meteorological factors affect OID, few studies have examined sulfur dioxide (SO2) or its interactions with these variables. METHODS: Using quasi-Poisson and distributed lag non-linear models, we analyzed the lagged, non-linear effects of meteorological factors and SO2 on OID cases in Fuzhou, China (2015-2019). Interactive effects between SO2 and meteorological variables were evaluated using multiplicative terms, multiplicative scale, relative excess risk due to interaction (RER
