Assistive devices in the rehabilitation on patients with electrical burns--three case reports.

Limb amputation is a devastating sequela in patients with high-voltage electrical injuries, which may result in permanent disability. It is vital for rehabilitation professionals to assist patients with amputations to maximize their residual function. This can be done using a myriad of therapeutic adaptation methods such as orthotics, prosthetics, and assistive devices so that an optimal performance in daily activities can be achieved. This article describes how 3 patients, after electrical trauma with various levels of amputation, benefited from customized assistive devices, which are simple

Investigation of the relationship between lower limb orthosis user satisfaction and quality of life and functionality in stroke patients: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Orthosis satisfaction may be an important parameter that increases orthosis usage and reveals orthosis' positive effect on rehabilitation. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between lower limb orthosis user satisfaction and quality of life (QOL) and functionality in stroke patients. METHODS: Forty-four stroke patients with a mean age of 56.91 ± 14.08 years were included. Orthosis user satisfaction was evaluated using the Orthotics and Prosthetics Users' Survey (OPUS). QOL was assessed using the Stroke-Specific Quality of Life Scale (SS-QOL). Lastly, functional status was

Toward quantitative characterization of essential tremor for future tremor suppression.

Tremor is the most common movement deficit and manifests in a variety of disorders, including Essential Tremor, Parkinson's Disease, Dystonia, and Cerebellar Ataxia. Although medication and surgical interventions have significantly reduced patient suffering, they are only partially effective and can carry undesired side effects, leaving many patients without satisfactory treatment options. Wearable tremor-suppressing devices could provide an alternative to medication and surgery. Multiple research groups have developed orthotic prototypes to low-pass filter tremor, but these devices have not y

Mobility Solutions After a Lower Extremity Fracture and Applicability to Battlefield and Wilderness Medicine.

The potential for delayed evacuation of injured Service members from austere environments highlights the need to develop solutions that can stabilize a wound and enable mobility during these prolonged casualty care (PCC) scenarios. Lower extremity fractures have traditionally been treated by immobilization (splinting) followed by air evacuation - a paradigm not practical in PCC scenarios. In the civilian sector, treatment of extremity injuries sustained during remote recreational activities have similar challenges, particularly when adverse weather or terrain precludes early ground or air resc

A prototype for an economical vertical microstomia orthosis.

One of the complications of thermal injury is the development of scars and contractures during the healing process. This scarring can be devastating, especially when it involves the mouth. The purpose of this report is to describe the construction of an alternative vertical mouth stretching orthosis for vertical microstomia. By using thermoplastic splinting material and a long thread screw, a vertical mouth-stretching orthosis can be custom-fit to any patient's mouth. The device can be fabricated for a pediatric or adult patient for the rehabilitation of a circumferential mouth burn, especiall

The surgical treatment of infantile flat foot. A new expanding endo-orthotic implant.

In the correction of flat foot in children, the fundamental requirement is to restore the normal relationship between the talus and calcaneus. To achieve this, the authors have devised an expanding orthotic implant which is inserted into the sinus tarsi. They discuss the indications and describe the surgical technique and the special instruments devised for fitting the device. The case material and first results after not less than 18 months follow-up are reported.

Exploration of outcome measures for assessing orthotic intervention in upper extremity peripheral nerve injuries: 2 case reports.

In upper extremity peripheral nerve injuries, orthotic intervention has been used as a valuable device to restore function. However, there is lacking evidence to support it. The purpose of this study was to explore the application of body function's outcome measures for orthotic intervention evaluation in patients with peripheral nerve injury. Two participants sustaining a peripheral nerve injury who underwent orthotic intervention were assessed: subject 1 was a 25-year-old man with ulnar and median nerve injury presenting with a composite claw; subject 2, a 28-year-old man with radial nerve i

Orthopedic management of acquired cerebrospasticity in childhood.

Of 221 children with head injuries and resultant deep coma followed for long-term problems, 156 became totally independent, functional individuals, only 61 lacking normal cognition and speech. Reconstructive surgical procedures for residual spasticity was necessary in 45 patients. Achilles lengthenings were the most common procedure performed; after Achilles lengthenings, toe flexor releases were most often required. Twenty children had anoxia from drowning or anesthesia problems; 7 of these had spastic hip deformities or dislocations, all within 6 months of the anoxic event. Progressive cereb

Helmet versus non-helmet treatment in infants with positional cranial deformation: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Active repositioning and cranial orthoses are the primary treatment choices for positional cranial deformation (CD). However, the superiority of helmet therapy over non-helmet therapies remains controversial. We conducted a meta-analysis of cranial asymmetry (CA) parameters from studies comparing helmet therapy to non-helmet therapy in infants with non-synostotic CD. METHODS: We systematically reviewed the literature from PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases. Exclusion criteria included lack of a control group, overlapping populations, and solely qualitative outcomes. Statistica

Reflections and future directions for psychological science in Prosthetics and Orthotics International.

In the inaugural edition of Prosthetics and Orthotics International in 1977, Dr Sidney Fishman identified the Psychological Sciences as one of six indispensable areas of skill and knowledge in professional prosthetic-orthotic practice. Since then, there have been substantial changes and developments in the complexity and capabilities of assistive technologies, greater emphasis on understanding the relationships between people and enabling technologies, growing recognition of the importance of the contexts and environments that support their use, and changes in both health care services and the

Study of human-machine physical interface for wearable mobility assist devices.

A decrease in mobility, related to illness, trauma or ageing, negatively affects the quality of life of the rapidly growing elderly population. A promising solution to maintain this standard of living is powered wearable mobility assist devices. Although they have achieved technological breakthroughs in the last decade, their overall success is still hindered by their induced physical discomfort, which limits their effective and prolonged usage. The aim of this study is to achieve a comprehensive characterization of human-machine physical interface to further advance the performance of wearabl

Design, Modelling, and Experimental Evaluation of a Compact Elastic Actuator for a Gait Assisting Exoskeleton.

This paper presents a Transmissive Force Sensing Elastic Actuator (TFSEA) for exoskeleton applications. Exoskeletons can serve as orthotic or rehabilitative devices enabling people with paraplegia to walk. Several exoskeletons have been commercialized, most of which are above 23 kg, making them too heavy and bulky for people with paraplegia to put on and take off by themselves. One of the bottlenecks of achieving lightweight exoskeleton design is actuation. This work focused on developing a compact, lightweight and high-performance actuator. Using the differential property of harmonic drive, a

Orthotic treatment of positional brachycephaly associated with osteogenesis imperfecta.

Osteogenesis imperfecta is an inherited disorder of the connective tissue characterized primarily by fractures with no or small causal antecedents and extremely variable clinical presentation. The disorder requires a global and, therefore, multidisciplinary therapeutic approach that should aim, among other aspects, at the prevention and treatment of deformities resulting from osteogenesis imperfecta. Due to limitations related to bony deformities, it can be difficult to place these infants in a variety of positions that would help remediate skull deformities, so a cranial orthosis becomes the

Tarsusmeter: Development of a wearable device for ankle joint impedance estimation.

We present the development and basic evaluation of a new wearable device for estimation of ankle joint impedance called Tarsusmeter. The device is intended for application with persons with locomotion disabilities to quantify the ankle joint impedance, especially in cases of spasticity where the joint's impedance is expected to differ significantly from healthy persons. The lack of a simple and light weight solution to provide objective evaluation of ankle joint impedance motivates the design criteria of this device to be as such. The target application is also to quantify variable stiffness a

Endoscopic-assisted osteotomies for the treatment of craniosynostosis.

INTRODUCTION: The development of multidisciplinar units for Craniofacial Surgery has led to better postoperative results and a considerable decrease in morbidity in the treatment of complex craniofacial patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Standard correction of craniosynostosis involves calvarial remodeling, often considerable blood losses that need to be replaced and lengthy hospital stay. The use of minimally invasive techniques for the correction of some of these malformations are widespread and allows the surgeon to minimize the incidence of complications by means of a decreased surgical tim

Experimental and computational analysis and testing of wearable hand tremor control orthoses.

Hand tremors are among the most prevalent neurodegenerative movement disorders, causing involuntary upper-limb oscillations that significantly impair patients' quality of life. While medications and therapy provide limited relief, wearable tremor suppression devices offer a promising non-invasive alternative. A hand tremor absorber, typically passive or active, is designed to counteract involuntary shaking through mechanical or electronic means. The importance of the proposed design lies in its ability to deliver high-performance, multi-axial tremor suppression without motors, power sources, o
