Fitting in: exploring the emotional dimension of adolescent peer pressure.

The general public and academic researchers alike have long recognized the importance of peer relations in the lives of young people. However, three issues are notably absent from the dominant models of peer influence. First, these models neglect the affective dimension of a youth's experiences. Second, the models tend to ascribe a passive role to the youth, a stance also reflected methodologically by the absence of the youth's voice. Third, the motivational component remains unspecified; that is, why does a youth conform to peer influence? Using a framework drawn from recent social psychologi…

Peer-friendship Networks and Self-harm among Adolescents from Inner-city Schools: A Social Network Study.

Peer-relationships are critically important for adolescent behavior, but how peer-friendship network composition and structure influence adolescent self-harm is less clear. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to explore the association between in-school peer-friendship networks, gender, and self-harm among inner-city adolescents. Participants were 2203 adolescents (mean age = 12.5 years, SD = 1.0; 53% girls) attending inner-city south London schools. Each adolescent nominated friends within their school year to construct sociometric peer-friendship networks and reported on lifetime self-

Temperament and peer problems from early to middle childhood: Gene-environment correlations with negative emotionality and sociability.

Based in a transactional framework in which children's own characteristics and the social environment influence each other to produce individual differences in social adjustment, we investigated relationships between children's peer problems and their temperamental characteristics, using a longitudinal and genetically informed study of 939 pairs of Israeli twins followed from early to middle childhood (ages 3, 5, and 6.5). Peer problems were moderately stable within children over time, such that children who appeared to have more peer problems at age 3 tended to have also more peer problems at

Callous-Unemotional Traits and Risk of Gun Carrying and Use During Crime.

OBJECTIVE: With the addition of the "with limited prosocial emotions" specifier within the diagnosis of conduct disorder (DSM-5) and of conduct-dissocial disorder (ICD-11) to designate those with elevated callous-unemotional traits, the authors examined the role that callous-unemotional traits play in the risk for gun carrying and gun use during a crime in a sample at high risk for gun violence. METHODS: Male juvenile offenders (N=1,215) from three regions of the United States were assessed after their first arrest and then reassessed every 6 months for 36 months and again at 48 months. Callo

Social reinstatement: a rat model of peer-induced relapse.

BACKGROUND: An important factor that can lead to drug relapse is to re-associate with drug-using social peers, but there is little literature on the effect of social peers on relapse in animal models. METHODS: The current study used a dual-compartment operant conditioning apparatus that allowed adult male rats to respond for cocaine in the presence of a conspecific. In experiment 1, rats were trained to self-administer cocaine in the presence of a social peer that was separated by a wire screen partition and then that peer was used as a reinstatement cue following a period of extinction. In t

Biological Risk and Infection Profiles of Young Adult Male Mexican American Gang Members.

OBJECTIVES: Little research has examined the long-term health consequences of gang affiliation among Mexican Americans. The objectives of this study were to (1) measure biological indicators of cardiovascular and metabolic risk, as well as prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), in a sample of Mexican American men aged 25-40 who were affiliated with gangs as adolescents and (2) compare those indicators with a comparable national sample of Latino men. METHODS: Using bivariate analyses, we compared blood pressure, body mass index, 4 metabolic and cardiovascular indicators, and 4 i

Self-initiated helping behaviors and recovery in severe mental illness: Implications for work, volunteerism, and peer support.

OBJECTIVE: Despite recent interest in peer support workers in recovery-oriented services, little is known about how helping behaviors may affect recovery from severe mental illness outside of formal peer support roles. The current study is a mixed-methods approach to understanding naturalistic helping behaviors and their relationship with recovery outcomes among persons with serious mental illness. METHODS: Forty-six participants with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders completed a narrative interview and standardized measures of recovery, symptoms, hope, patient activation, quality of life, med

What Matters in Sustaining Peer Support for Adults in Mental Health Services? Exploring the Perceptions of Diverse Actors.

Peer support is a prominent recovery-oriented innovation in mental healthcare, with implementation efforts to integrate peer support workers reported worldwide. However, its sustainment, including the factors that shape it, remains underexplored. Sustaining evidence-informed innovations and their associated benefits is a global policy priority and a complex challenge for health care systems. Although recent research has advanced theoretical frameworks and tools to support sustainability planning and assessment, there is a growing need for empirical studies that examine how sustainment unfolds

Developing a Typology for Peer Education and Peer Support Delivered by Prisoners.

Peer interventions delivered for prisoners by prisoners offer a means to improve health and reduce risk factors for this population. The variety of peer programs poses challenges for synthesizing evidence. This article presents a typology developed as part of a systematic review of peer interventions in prison settings. Peer interventions are grouped into four modes: peer education, peer support, peer mentoring, and bridging roles, with the addition of a number of specific interventions identified through the review process. The article discusses the different modes of peer delivery with refer

Between Support and Risk: The Dual Role of Peer Relationships in Adolescents' Mental Health.

Background/Objectives: Adolescence is a developmental stage marked by profound transformations and heightened vulnerability to mental health difficulties, with peer relationships playing a central role, as they provide both protective and risk factors for adolescents' mental health and well-being. This study aims to characterize Portuguese adolescents' perceptions of how peers and friends influence their mental health, both positively and negatively. Methods: Participants were 99 adolescents aged 14-19 years old enrolled in a Portuguese secondary school. Data were collected through two open-en

Does substance use moderate the effects of parents and peers on risky sexual behaviour?

We investigated the moderating effects of drug/alcohol use in the past 3 months on the relationships of peer influence, parental permissiveness, and teen disposition (i.e., achievement motivation, attitude toward school, and value placed on health) with adolescent risky sexual behaviour. Participants were 207 adolescents receiving psychiatric care. Substance use did not moderate the relationship between adolescent disposition and risky sex. By contrast, peer influence and parental permissiveness were linked to risky sex but only for teens who reported using drugs/alcohol. Controlling for other…

Results from a cluster-randomized trial to evaluate a microfinance and peer health leadership intervention to prevent HIV and intimate partner violence among social networks of Tanzanian men.

Despite calls to engage men in HIV and intimate partner violence (IPV) prevention efforts, effective approaches to reach and engage men in low-resource, high-HIV prevalence settings are limited. We identified and engaged social networks of mostly young men in a study designed to evaluate the efficacy of a combined microfinance and peer health leadership intervention to prevent HIV and IPV. We conducted a cluster-randomized trial among 60 social networks locally referred to as "camps" within Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Camps were randomly assigned (1:1) to a microfinance and peer health leadership

Automatic Bayes Factors for Testing Equality- and Inequality-Constrained Hypotheses on Variances.

In comparing characteristics of independent populations, researchers frequently expect a certain structure of the population variances. These expectations can be formulated as hypotheses with equality and/or inequality constraints on the variances. In this article, we consider the Bayes factor for testing such (in)equality-constrained hypotheses on variances. Application of Bayes factors requires specification of a prior under every hypothesis to be tested. However, specifying subjective priors for variances based on prior information is a difficult task. We therefore consider so-called automa
