REFRACTIVE SURGERY FOR HIGH AMETROPIES, A FEW CONCLUSIONS.

This paper presents a few clinical cases of patients with high ametropies and/or anisometropia, who underwent one or two surgical procedures in our clinic, in order to obtain independence of glasses or contact lenses. Twenty cases of high ametropies were included in our study, with or without astigmatism, with transparent lenses, who presented in our clinic for surgical treatment to correct their refractive errors. Postoperatively, we analyzed the results and took decisions for each case in particular; sometimes a second surgical procedure was needed.

Conductive keratoplasty.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Conductive keratoplasty is a noninvasive, in-office procedure for the correction of hyperopia, hyperopic astigmatism, and management of presbyopia. It serves as an alternative to laser-based refractive surgery with essentially no intraoperative or postoperative complications. RECENT FINDINGS: In the past decade, photorefractive keratectomy and laser in-situ keratomileusis have been the most popular refractive surgical procedures to correct myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Although relatively safe, flap-related complications often result in undesirable visual acuity. Since…

Nonaccommodative esotropia after cataract extraction in a patient with previous accommodative esotropia.

We report a case of nonaccommodative esotropia developing after bilateral cataract surgery that corrected the preexisting hyperopia in a patient with accommodative esotropia since childhood. The esotropia required surgical correction despite the good visual acuity after the cataract surgery. In patients with preexisting strabismus, there is a possibility of decompensation of adaptive binocular mechanisms after cataract surgery and refractive procedures.

Corneal sensation after cataract and refractive surgery.

Most surgical procedures involving the anterior segment of the eye disrupt the normal organization of corneal innervation. Since denervation of the cornea results in impaired epithelial wound healing, increased epithelial permeability, decreased epithelial metabolic activity, and loss of cytoskeletal structures associated with cellular adhesion, it is important to identify the factors that determine the extent of neural regeneration. Mechanisms of corneal nerve damage and studies of corneal nerve fiber loss and reinnervation after cataract and refractive surgery--epikeratophakia, cryokeratomil

Wound healing after keratorefractive surgery: review of biological and optical considerations.

The introduction of the excimer laser for keratorefractive surgery in the 1990 s permanently reshaped the treatment landscape for correcting refractive errors, such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Until that point, these treatments had relied on less predictable techniques, such as radial keratotomy and automated lamellar keratectomy. In recent years, other new technologies, along with increased understanding of the basic science of refractive errors, higher-order aberrations, biomechanics, and the biology of corneal wound healing, have allowed for a reduction in the surgical complicati

[Paying extremely high attention to customized option and visual quality evaluation of refractive surgery].

As one of the methods to correct ametropia, refractive surgery has been accepted by more and more patients for its good safety, effectiveness and long-term stability. The two major types of refractive surgery are corneal refractive surgery, which is mainly performed with excimer laser and/or femtosecond laser, and phakic intraocular lens implantation. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages. Surgeons should choose the best method according to their own technical conditions and the individual situation of each patient. In the preoperative and postoperative evaluation, we should not o

Intraocular lens power calculation after corneal refractive surgery.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Corneal refractive procedures have become increasingly popular over the past decade, allowing patients to have excellent uncorrected visual acuity and spectacle independence. As these individuals mature, many will eventually undergo cataract surgery. With the advances in modern cataract surgery and lens implant technology, particularly presbyopic intraocular lens implants, patients and physicians have greater expectations regarding visual outcomes and independence from glasses after cataract surgery. Therefore, it is important to understand methods to accurately determine in

Keratorefractive approaches to achieving pseudoaccommodation.

Although presbyopia is ostensibly an age-related disease of the lens, ciliary body, and zonular apparatus, surgeons have nonetheless persevered in their attempts to create a solution to the problem of diminished near vision by performing keratorefractive procedures. This article discusses two approaches of varying technological sophistication, beginning with surgically induced astigmatism and continuing through enhanced monovision. Sometimes simple solutions are the best, and the technological innovation in cataract and refractive surgery has met with unrivalled success in the last three decad

Combined Protocols for Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking with Photorefractive Surgery for Refractive Management of Keratoconus: Update on Techniques and Review of Literature.

With the development and gradual dissemination of corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) in the twenty-first century as an early treatment for keratoconus, the management paradigm has shifted to include a greater focus on complete refractive correction for these patients. Though supplemental hard contact lens therapy remains a mainstay of visual rehabilitation in keratoconus, there has been increasing appeal in a completely surgical approach by combining CXL with adjuvant refractive procedures to both halt the ectatic process and enhance functional visual outcomes. Collectively termed "CXL plus"
