[Marburg Spelling Training program--results of a brief intervention].

OBJECTIVES: The Marburg Spelling Training Program was administered to a sample of 10 spelling-disabled primary school pupils (2nd-4th graders) over three months in an individual setting. RESULTS: Statistical analyses yielded significant improvements in spelling and reading test performances, but none yet in the emotional stress caused by the problems. CONCLUSION: The Marburg Spelling Training Program has now proven to be effective not only in long-term, but also in short-term intervention.

[Neurological assessment for learning disability].

Learning disabilities present a diagnostic and therapeutic management challenge that requires an interdisciplinary approach initiated and coordinated by the child neurologist. An optimal evaluation for these conditions must include an extensive knowledge of the types and range of these disorders, a complete neurological and laboratory examination, a neuropsychological assessment tailored to the individual needs of the patient, a speech pathological evaluation when pertinent, and special attention to the frequent co-occurrence of more than one condition susceptible of interfering with learning.

The balance model of dyslexia and remedial training: an evaluative study.

The aim of this study was to test the validity of Bakker's (1983, 1990) theory and treatment paradigm of dyslexia. Twenty-one children (mean age = 9.9 years) categorized as P-type dyslexics (showing accurate but slow and fragmented reading) and 19 children (mean age = 9.7 years) categorized as L-type dyslexics (fast but inaccurate readers) were presented with hemisphere-specific stimulation (HSS) and hemisphere-alluding stimulation (HAS). HSS was produced by presenting words to either the left or the right visual half-field, or to the left or right hand of the participant. HAS training was ach

Cognitive patterns of children with dyslexia: a comparison between groups with high and average nonverbal intelligence.

We tested the hypothesis that children with dyslexia identified by word decoding deficit will be poor in specific cognitive processes that require successive processing and rapid articulation, irrespective of their high or average nonverbal IQ. Children with dyslexia and normally achieving children between 9 years and 11 years of age were divided into four groups comprising average-IQ and high-IQ children with dyslexia and normal readers. All children were administered measures of planning, attention-arousal, simultaneous and successive processes, phonemic segmentation, and nonverbal IQ. Resul

Communication intervention for individuals with dual sensory and intellectual impairments.

For individuals with dual sensory and intellectual impairments, the lack of effective communication skills places severe limitations on their learning potential and sense of belonging. Educational intervention for this population has recognized the critical need to develop communication skills, yet the complexity of the individual's needs continues to plague progress. Unique needs and situations of individuals in this category, coupled with extremely limited numbers of trained and experienced professionals, challenge the field to develop creative means of addressing this vital issue. Automatisation deficits in balance for dyslexic children.

Traditional theories of dyslexia have focused on components of the reading process. The Dyslexic Automatisation Deficit hypothesis takes a broader view, attributing deficits to an inability to become completely fluent in cognitive and motor skills. A series of experiments compared the balance of 15-yr.-old and 11-yr.-old groups of dyslexic children and normal children matched for age and IQ under single-task and dual-task conditions. There were no group differences in the single-task conditions. However, introduction of a concurrent secondary task led to a dissociation in that, whereas the bal

A meta-analysis of morphological interventions: effects on literacy achievement of children with literacy difficulties.

This study synthesizes 79 standardized mean-change differences between control and treatment groups from 17 independent studies, investigating the effect of morphological interventions on literacy outcomes for students with literacy difficulties. Average total sample size ranged from 15 to 261 from a wide range of grade levels. Overall, morphological instruction showed a significant improvement on literacy achievement (d = 0.33). Specifically, its effect was significant on several literacy outcomes such as phonological awareness (d = 0.49), morphological awareness (d = 0.40), vocabulary (d = 0

Efficacy of small group reading intervention for beginning readers with reading-delay: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the effectiveness of an intervention for reading-delayed children in Year-1 classes. METHODS: A sample (N = 77) of children drawn from 14 schools representing those with the weakest reading skills were randomly allocated to one of two groups. A 20-week intervention group received the intervention for two consecutive 10-week periods, while a 10-week intervention group only received the intervention for the second 10 weeks of the study. The programme was delivered in daily 20-minute sessions that alternated between small group (N = 3) and individual teaching. Th

Effects of a phonologically driven treatment for dyslexia on lactate levels measured by proton MR spectroscopic imaging.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Dyslexia is a language disorder in which reading ability is compromised because of poor phonologic skills. The purpose of this study was to measure the effect of a phonologically driven treatment for dyslexia on brain lactate response to language stimulation as measured by proton MR spectroscopic imaging. METHODS: Brain lactate metabolism was measured at two different time points (1 year apart) during four different cognitive tasks (three language tasks and one nonlanguage task) in dyslexic participants (n = 8) and in control participants (n = 7) by using a fast MR spe

Instrument for locating students with suspected learning disabilities: a quantitative approach.

The instrument to locate students with learning disabilities was developed to create equality and uniformity, so that such difficulties could be spotted independently of socialization factors, teachers and parents to whom the student had been exposed. The instrument was developed on the basis of research that defines the reading rate of students with reading disabilities in words per minute, the minimum number of errors for locating writing disabilities, and the number of answers and lines a student uses to reconstruct the content of a passage adapted to his or her age level. The research carr

An experiment on cognitive remediation of word-reading difficulty.

Cognitive remediation of decoding deficit was attempted by following a theoretically based program. The theory identifies four major cognitive processes: Planning, Attention, Simultaneous, and Successive (PASS) processing. The PASS Remedial Program (PREP) provides 10 structured tasks that are aimed at developing internalized strategies for mainly successive processes (6 tasks) and simultaneous process (4 tasks); deficits in either of the two may lead to poor decoding. Through its "global process" training and curriculum-related "bridging" training, PREP facilitates application of internalized

Training in rehabilitation: basics needs and considerations.

Rehabilitation is an integral part of medicine. It includes physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy. It involves nurses, social workers, clinical and educational psychologists. It also involves resettlement into the community and to work. Each patient, whether temporarily or permanently disabled, requires a comprehensive service to meet all his needs at the appropriate time. Although there are some multidisciplinary teams providing comprehensive rehabilitation services the needs are so wide and complex that many patients do not achieve optimum rehabilitation. Most doctors believ

Teacher candidates' mastery of phoneme-grapheme correspondence: massed versus distributed practice in teacher education.

Matching phonemes (speech sounds) to graphemes (letters and letter combinations) is an important aspect of decoding (translating print to speech) and encoding (translating speech to print). Yet, many teacher candidates do not receive explicit training in phoneme-grapheme correspondence. Difficulty with accurate phoneme production and/or lack of understanding of sound-symbol correspondence can make it challenging for teachers to (a) identify student errors on common assessments and (b) serve as a model for students when teaching beginning reading or providing remedial reading instruction. The cost-effectiveness of an intensive treatment protocol for severe dyslexia in children.

Studies of interventions for dyslexia have focused entirely on outcomes related to literacy. In this study, we considered a broader picture assessing improved quality of life compared with costs. A model served as a tool to compare costs and effects of treatment according to a new protocol and care as usual. Quality of life was measured and valued by proxies using a general quality-of-life instrument (EQ-5D). We considered medical cost and non-medical cost (e.g. remedial teaching). The model computed cost per successful treatment and cost per quality adjusted life year (QALY) in time. About 75

[Ten questions on the treatment of obesity: from dieting to surgery].

Advantages and risk of weight reduction achieved by combining diets or unbalanced diets with restriction of carbohydrates or fat are discussed. Nutriments differ according to their density, their flavour, their satiating, and their thermogenic effect. Food is also a source of pleasure and a remedy to frustration. One of the problems of dieting is that most patients regain the weight they have lost due to a hypometabolism secondary to caloric restriction. Only physical exercise together with behavior therapy are able to slow down this weight regain. The indication of drug treatment with orlista

Evaluation of the benefits of assistive reading software: perceptions of high school students with learning disabilities.

Using assistive reading software may be a cost-effective way to increase the opportunity for independent learning in students with learning disabilities. However, the effectiveness and perception of assistive reading software has seldom been explored in English-as-a-second language students with learning disabilities. This research was designed to explore the perception and effect of using assistive reading software in high school students with dyslexia (one subtype of learning disability) to improve their English reading and other school performance. The Kurzweil 3000 software was used as the

Effects of visual hemisphere-specific stimulation versus reading-focused training in dyslexic children.

Two groups of children with developmental dyslexia were treated over a period of four months. Fourteen children received visual hemisphere-specific stimulation (VHSS) and 11 children were treated with a customary, reading-focused training programme (RT). Reading performance was investigated before and after treatment, as were spelling abilities, phonemic awareness and verbal memory. Improvement in reading accuracy was significantly greater in the VHSS group than in the RT group. Significant improvements were also observed for memory and phonemic skills. The results were compared to existing da

Responsiveness to mathematical problem-solving instruction: comparing students at risk of mathematics disability with and without risk of reading disability.

This study assessed responsiveness to a 16-week mathematical problem-solving treatment as a function of students' risk for disability. Among 301 third graders, TerraNova scores were used to categorize students as at risk for both reading and mathematics disability (MDR/RDR; 20 control and 12 experimental), at risk for mathematics disability only (MDR-only; 5 and 8), at risk for reading disability only (RDR-only; 12 and 15), or not at risk (NDR; 60 and 69). Interactions among at-risk status, treatment, and time showed that as a function of treatment, MDR/RDR, MDR-only, and RDR-only students imp
