The effects of mindfulness-based techniques on self-rumination, cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression among patients with major depression: a nursing perspective.

BACKGROUND: Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) often struggle with adaptive strategies like self-reflection and cognitive reappraisal, relying instead on maladaptive ones like self-rumination and emotional suppression. Mindfulness-based techniques (MBTs) have been identified as a promising complementary psychological intervention for this population. AIMS: To evaluate the effects of MBTs on mindful attention awareness, self-rumination, self-reflection, cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression in patients with MDD between patients who receive MBTs and those who do not. The effectiveness of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for reducing rumination and improving mindfulness and self-compassion in patients with treatment-resistant depression.

Introduction Depression is one of the most important psychiatric disorders, and the rate of recurrence is high. The heavy cost burden of depression is probably due to treatment-resistant depression. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) in patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Method The present study was a quasi-experimental study conducted with twenty-four patients with treatment-resistant depression. Participants were selected by purposive sampling and randomly assigned to two groups, an experimental group an

Cognitive Specificity Enhancement Training (CoST) in depressed patients with a history of childhood maltreatment: a pilot study on the feasibility and efficacy of CoST for reducing rumination, cognitive avoidance, and depressive symptoms.

Depression rates are rising globally, with traditional treatments often failing to address cognitive overgeneralization - a distortion that perpetuates negative thinking and depressive symptoms. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Cognitive Specificity Enhancement Training (CoST) in reducing rumination, cognitive avoidance, and depressive symptoms, particularly in patients with childhood maltreatment. Using a quasi-experimental design, 40 depressed patients (Mage = 33.02 ± 10.69) with a history of childhood maltreatment were purposively sampled and randomly assigned to experimental (n

The cognitive engine of evaluative threat: socially prescribed perfectionism and Music Performance Anxiety-a moderated mediation analysis of rumination and self-compassion.

BACKGROUND: Socially Prescribed Perfectionism (SP) is a robust risk factor for Music Performance Anxiety (MPA), yet the underlying cognitive and regulatory mechanisms remain inadequately understood. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to delineate these pathways by constructing a moderated mediation model, examining rumination as a cognitive mediator and Self-Compassion (SC) as a multi-stage moderator. METHODS: Data were collected from 606 university music students. Analyses were conducted using Hayes' PROCESS macro (Model 59) to test the moderated mediation, controlling for academic grade and perfo

Dynamic neural network modulation associated with rumination in major depressive disorder: a prospective observational comparative analysis of cognitive behavioral therapy and pharmacotherapy.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and pharmacotherapy are primary treatments for major depressive disorder (MDD). However, their differential effects on the neural networks associated with rumination, or repetitive negative thinking, remain poorly understood. This study included 135 participants, whose rumination severity was measured using the rumination response scale (RRS) and whose resting brain activity was measured using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at baseline and after 16 weeks. MDD patients received either standard CBT based on Beck's manual (n = 28) or pharmacotherap

Association between cognitive rumination and periodontal disease, tooth loss and oral health-related quality of life in a rural Southern Brazil population.

OBJECTIVES: Rumination is a maladaptive emotion regulation strategy. It has been associated with several psychological disorders and physical problems. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate whether cognitive rumination is associated with periodontal disease (PD), tooth loss (TL), and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A population-based sample from a rural area in southern Brazil was evaluated. Calibrated examiners carried out a complete periodontal examination at six sites-per-tooth. Rumination and Reflection (RRQ) and Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP

Exploring how cognitive-behavioral physical activity links ruminative thinking and mental wellbeing in sports high school adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined the associations among ruminative thinking style (RTS), subjective wellbeing (SWB), and cognitive-behavioral physical activity (CBPA) in a sample of 1,326 adolescents (aged 14-18) from sports high schools. METHOD: Using validated self-report measures, data were analyzed through bootstrapped mediation models. RESULTS: RTS was negatively associated with SWB (β = -0.1792, p < 0.001), while CBPA showed a partial mediating effect in this relationship (indirect β = 0.0779, p < 0.001). DISCUSSION: These results suggest that cognitive-behavioral orientations toward

Fighting Depression: Action Video Game Play May Reduce Rumination and Increase Subjective and Objective Cognition in Depressed Patients.

Cognitive deficits are common in depression and may persist following the resolution of affective symptoms. However, therapeutic strategies that successfully target cognitive impairments are lacking. Recent work has demonstrated that playing action video games leads to improvements in cognition, in particular executive function, in healthy individuals. We therefore set out to test whether playing video games can reduce symptoms associated with depression. We focussed on depressive symptoms and on rumination, since rumination is a good predictor of depression and may contribute to triggering de

When self-help is no help: traditional cognitive skills training does not prevent depressive symptoms in people who ruminate.

A randomized trial was conducted to test the efficacy of three self-directed prevention intervention workbooks for depression. Cognitively at-risk college freshmen were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: traditional cognitive, non-traditional cognitive, and academic skills. Consistent with hypotheses, participants who were high in rumination and experienced stress exhibited significantly greater levels of depressive symptoms after completing the traditional cognitive skills workbook than after completing the other two workbooks. This pattern of results held post-intervention and 4 m

Elevated cognitive rumination and adverse life events are associated with lower cortical surface area and suicidal ideation in adolescents with major depressive disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Suicide is the second most common cause of death among young people. Structural brain alterations, rumination, and recent stressful experiences contribute to suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs). METHODS: Here, we employed structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine the unique and combined relationships of these risk factors with STBs in a sample of young people with major depressive disorder (MDD) from the Magnetic Resonance-Improving Mood with Psychoanalytic and Cognitive Therapies (MR-IMPACT) study (N = 67, mean age = 15.90; standard deviation ± 1.32). RESULTS: Whereas i

Unpacking cognitive emotion regulation in eating disorder psychopathology: The differential relationships between rumination, thought suppression, and eating disorder symptoms among men and women.

While previous literature suggests that emotion dysregulation is a salient factor contributing to the onset and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs), less is known about how maladaptive, cognitively oriented regulation strategies such as rumination and thought suppression may be uniquely related to ED symptoms in men and women. The present study sought to examine the independent associations of ruminative brooding and thought suppression with ED symptoms, after controlling for negative affect intensity, and assess whether these associations differ by gender. Participants were 263 undergraduat

Mechanisms of change in long-term transdiagnostic cognitive behavioural therapy: the sequential effect of rumination and worry on symptoms and quality of life.

Anxiety and depressive disorders are the most prevalent disorders worldwide and significantly impair quality of life (QoL). Transdiagnostic cognitive behavioural therapy (TD-CBT) is effective in treating these disorders and improving QoL, but its long-term mechanisms of change are poorly understood. Rumination and worry are key processes addressed by TD-CBT. In this study, we analysed the sequential effect of TD-CBT on post-treatment rumination and worry, anxiety/depression symptoms at 6-months and psychological and physical QoL at 12-months. We use data from PsicAP, a randomised clinical tria

Anodal tDCS over the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex modulates cognitive processing of emotional information as a function of trait rumination in healthy volunteers.

Healthy individuals reporting higher (as compared to lower) levels of trait rumination recruit more neural activity in dorso-cortical regions (mostly in the right hemisphere) when inhibiting negative information, possibly to compensate their difficulty to disengage from it. In the present study, we investigated whether these latter neural correlates are causally implicated in cognitive control in these individuals. We administered the Cued Emotional Control Task, a measure of cognitive control indexed by cognitive costs for inhibiting versus providing a habitual response for emotional informat

The Relationship Between Posttraumatic Cognitive Change, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, and Posttraumatic Growth Among Chinese Adolescents After the Yancheng Tornado: The Mediating Effect of Rumination.

The aim of this study was to explore the different cognitive processes involved in the development of posttraumatic stress disorders (PTSDs) and posttraumatic growth (PTG). One year after the Yancheng tornado, 455 middle school students were assessed to study how posttraumatic cognitive change (PCC) influenced PTSD and PTG among traumatized Chinese adolescents through the role of rumination. The results indicated that intrusive rumination partly mediated the relationship between PCC and PTSD, and deliberate rumination partly mediated the relationship between PCC and PTSD and completely mediate

Two sides of the same thought: Positive and negative rumination conform to separate paths through which negative cognitive biases predict temporal changes in depression.

BACKGROUND: Negative cognitive biases and maladaptive emotion regulation are established risk factors for depression. However, longitudinal studies have primarily focused on how these biases exacerbate the regulation of negative affect, often overlooking the concurrent role of positive affect regulation. This study provides an integral analysis of how negative attention and interpretation biases predict changes in depressive symptoms via the differential use of both negative (brooding, reappraisal) and positive (dampening, positive rumination) regulation strategies. METHODS: A longitudinal st

Subjective cognitive impairment and presenteeism mediate the associations of rumination with subjective well-being and ill-being in Japanese adult workers from the community.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the roles of rumination, subjective cognitive impairment (SCI), and presenteeism have been emphasized in occupational mental health. However, associations between rumination, SCI, presenteeism, and psychological well-being are not fully understood. We hypothesized that SCI and presenteeism mediate the associations between rumination and subjective well-being (SWB) and subjective ill-being (SIB). Hence, we investigated the mediating roles of SCI and presenteeism in this study. METHODS: A total of 458 adult workers (mean age, 40.8±11.9 years; 44.1% male), who were r

Negative rumination in social anxiety: A randomised trial investigating the effects of a brief intervention on cognitive processes before, during and after a social situation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: According to cognitive models of Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), negative rumination is a key maintaining factor in the vicious cycle of social anxiety. However, there is a scarcity of research investigating treatment effects on rumination in social anxiety, as well as other key cognitive variables. The current study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a brief intervention on a range of cognitive processes, most notably negative rumination. Additionally, predictors of negative rumination and state anxiety are also investigated. METHODS: Participants with a diagno

Reappraisal of Mental Illness-Related Beliefs During Psychiatric Clinical Exposure: Perceived Dangerousness, Ruminative Thought Style, and Cognitive-Metacognitive Characteristics.

Stigma-related beliefs toward mental illness may change during psychiatric clinical exposure, but individual differences in this process remain insufficiently understood. This single-center observational pre-post study examined observed changes in mental illness-related beliefs among 185 medical interns who completed an approximately 30-day psychiatry clerkship between May 2025 and May 2026, with perceived dangerousness defined as the primary outcome. Beliefs were assessed before and after the exposure period using the Beliefs Toward Mental Illness Scale. Associations between baseline cognitiv
