The effect of serotonin on the brain blood supply was studied in rats before and after ischemic damage. The ischemic damage, induced by ligation of the middle meningeal artery, markedly enhanced the constrictor effect of serotonin on the brain vessels. Tropoxin, a 5HT2 receptor blocker, completely eliminated these cerebrovascular effects of serotonin.

"Ecstasy" or 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) is a popular drug of abuse and is generally regarded as safe by the lay public. There are an increasing number of reports of MDMA-induced toxicity that exhibit features of the serotonin syndrome. We report a case of severe hyperthermia, altered mental status, and autonomic dysfunction after a single recreational ingestion of MDMA.

Serotonin agonists (for the acute treatment of attacks) and antagonists (for prophylactic treatment) are the most widely used drugs to treat migraine. However, their effectiveness is not complete and their use is limited by side effects. The activity and presumptive mode of action of these drugs provide support for the role of serotonin in the pathophysiology of migraine and suggest that the trigeminal-vascular system is at the center of the attack; however, other factors and mechanisms may also be involved.

5-HT precursors are used in depressions on the basis of the 5-HT hypothesis - an hypothesis which postulates that a cerebral 5-HT deficiency can play a role in the pathogenesis of depressions. The effects of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) on in vitro transformed primary sporocysts of Schistosoma mansoni were investigated. Serotonin treatment significantly increased parasite motility (percentage of motile sporocysts) and length at concentrations as low as 1 microM.
