Antiretroviral Therapy-Induced Bone Loss Is Durably Suppressed by a Single Dose of Zoledronic Acid in Treatment-Naive Persons with Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection: A Phase IIB Trial.

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and antiretroviral therapy (ART) are associated with bone loss leading to increased fracture rate among persons with HIV (PWH). We previously showed long-acting antiresorptive zoledronic acid (ZOL) prevented ART-induced bone loss through 48 weeks of therapy and here investigate whether protection persisted. METHODS: We randomized 63 nonosteoporotic, treatment-naive adult PWH initiating ART to ZOL (5 mg) versus placebo in a double-blinded, placebo-controlled, phase IIb trial. Here we analyzed the long-term outcome data (144 weeks). Plasm

Protocol for a single-arm, multi-component behavior change technique (BCT) intervention to develop a walking habit among caregivers for persons with Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRD).

Even low to moderate physical activity is critical in improving and maintaining physical health and well-being. Caregivers of people living with Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRD) are a burdened population and, as such, can experience challenges with managing even modest increases in physical activity while caring for others. While some interventions have been proposed to increase physical activity, many fail to consider the unique needs of caregivers of people with ADRD. The purpose of this 12-week decentralized behavioral trial is to test the efficacy of a multi-component, person

Chronic Periodontitis and Immunity, Towards the Implementation of a Personalized Medicine: A Translational Research on Gene Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) Linked to Chronic Oral Dysbiosis in 96 Caucasian Patients.

Chronic periodontitis (CP) is a complex pathology with a significant impact worldwide causing bone loss. Oral dysbiosis is a highly inflammatory condition associated to a long-term insulting infection and represents an underestimated CP key factor associated with an imbalance of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory gene responses. The presence of a single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the promoter region of interleukin 10 (IL-10) gene-1082, -819, and -592 was a possible determinant cause. This translational research aimed to provide outcomes on the role of IL-10 gene expression in bone

Linezolid and Ciprofloxacin-Induced SJS/TEN (Stevens-Johnson Syndrome/Toxic Epidermolysis Necrosis) Overlap in a Patient With Borderline Personality Disorder During a Single Hospital Stay: A Difficult Case to Manage.

SJS/TEN (Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermolysis necrosis) is a T-cell mediated hypersensitivity syndrome in which cytotoxic CD8+ cells react against keratinocytes, resulting in widespread apoptosis and cell necrosis. About 90% of these cases are attributed to drug reactions, while 10% are idiopathic. The disease is classified according to body surface area (BSA) involvement and the thickness of epidermal loss. We report a case of a female with borderline personality disorder on antipsychotic medication, who developed SJS/TEN overlap after taking ciprofloxacin for her urinary tract infect

Personalized subcutaneous administration of hepatitis B surface antibodies without nucleos(t)ide analogs for patients at risk of renal failure after liver transplantation: a prospective single center cohort study.

Currently, nucleos(t)ide analogs (NAs) in monotherapy are favored as prophylaxis against hepatitis B recurrence after liver transplantation. However, in patients at risk of renal failure, renal safety of NAs is of concern. We investigated the safety and efficacy of subcutaneous (SC) hepatitis B immunoglobulins (HBIG) in monotherapy. This is a single-arm prospective trial in patients transplanted >1 year. We included 43 Caucasian patients. The majority was treated with calcineurin inhibitors, and several patients had other risk factors for renal impairment as well: diabetes mellitus (n = 10/43)
