Low Temperature Plasma Jet Affects Acute Skin Wounds in Diabetic Mice Through Reactive Components.

As a common complication of diabetes, diabetic foot ulcers serious affect the life quality even lead to amputation if it's not properly treated. In this paper, we developed a Low Temperature Plasma Jet (LTPJ) system for treating diabetic foot ulcers on streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice. This system generates time-dependent reactive nitrogen and oxygen species (RNOS), which have temperature below 40°C. The wound area of normal mice was significantly reduced after LTPJ treatment. Histological and immunohistochemistry analysis showed faster deposition of collagen and more vessel formation both

Can Skin Temperature Be Altered After Different Magnitudes of Eccentric Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage?

Purpose: This study aimed to assess skin temperature (Tsk) changes after different magnitudes of exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) of the elbow flexor muscles and investigate whether Tsk is related to indirect markers of EIMD. Methods: Thirty healthy active men were randomly allocated to the mild (MiDG) (n = 15) or moderate (MoDG) (n = 15) muscle damage group. Muscle damage in elbow flexor muscles was induced by 10 (for MiDG) or 30 (for MoDG) maximal eccentric isokinetic contractions at 60 degrees/s. Tsk, maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC), delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS),…

Comparing thermal discomfort with skin temperature response of lower-limb prosthesis users during exercise.

BACKGROUND: Thermal discomfort is prevalent among prosthesis users. This observational study of thirty unilateral lower-limb prosthesis users compared their skin temperatures and the thermal discomfort experienced during exercise between their residual and contralateral limbs. METHODS: Participants performed a 2-minute interval cycling exercise test. Skin temperature was measured at matched locations on each leg during the 1-minute rest intervals. Average rate-of-change in skin temperature was compared between legs using a repeated measures analysis of variance. Participants rated thermal dis…

[Changes in palmar skin blood flow, perfusion index and temperature during endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy].

BACKGROUND: In endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS), it is required to perform accurate cautery of the sympathetic trunk. Monitoring of p … relations were found between increases in skin blood flow and PI after ETS in cases with the palmar skin temperature just before ETS of below 35 degrees C. CONCLUSIONS: In these cases, we can substitute increases in PI with increases in skin blood flow during ETS.

Skin temperature influence on transcutaneous carbon dioxide (CO2) conductivity and skin blood flow in healthy human subjects at the arm and wrist.

Objective: present transcutaneous carbon dioxide (CO2)-tcpCO2-monitors suffer from limitations which hamper their widespread use, and call for a new tcpCO2 measurement technique. However, the progress in this area is hindered by the lack of knowledge in transcutaneous CO2 diffusion. To address this knowledge gap, this study focuses on investigating the influence of skin temperature on two key skin properties: CO2 permeability and skin blood flow. Methods: a monocentric prospective exploratory study including 40 healthy adults was undertaken. Each subject experienced a 90 min visit split into f…

Effect of whole-body cryostimulation on skin temperature and thermal comfort in severe obese patients.

Obesity is a global public health problem, and new non-surgical or pharmacological treatments are being explored. Among these, cryostimulation has emerged as a new beneficial non-invasive method. Several studies have reported a greater decrease in skin temperature following cryostimulation in individuals with higher BMI or body fat percentage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a single 3-min whole-body cryostimulation (WBC) session on skin temperature and cold perception in male and female obese subjects. Skin temperature changes before and after the 3-min cryostimulation exp…

Influence of body position on skin temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure in active men.

The use of thermography to measure skin temperature (Tsk) is typically assessed in a standing position; however, the differences of Tsk in different body positions have not been adequately studied. This study aimed to analyze the influence of body position (sitting, standing, and supine) on Tsk. Twenty-nine trained men (age 23.52 ± 0.34 years) spent 10 minutes in each of the three positions in random order. During these postures, the heart rate (HR) response and systolic and diastolic blood pressure were measured as influential cardiovascular variables. Tsk was measured in the trapezius, shoul…

Effect of different Volumes of exercise on skin temperature responses over the following 24 hours.

Skin temperature responses have been advocated to indicate exercise-induced muscle soreness and recovery status. While the evidence is contradictory, we hypothesize that the presence of muscle damage and the time window of measurement are confounding factors in the skin temperature response. The objective was to determine whether skin temperature is influenced by different workloads and the time course of temperature measurements over the following 24 h. 24 trained male military were assigned to one of three groups: GC group (n = 8) serving as control not performing exercises, GE group (n = 8)…

Infrared Thermography for Estimating Supraclavicular Skin Temperature and BAT Activity in Humans: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is a thermogenic tissue with potential as a therapeutic target in the treatment of obesity and related metabolic disorders. The most used technique for quantifying human BAT activity is the measurement of 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose uptake via a positron emission tomography/computed tomography scan following exposure to cold. However, several studies have indicated the measurement of the supraclavicular skin temperature (SST) by infrared thermography (IRT) to be a less invasive alternative. This work reviews the state of the art of this latter method as a mean…

Validity of Skin, Oral and Tympanic Temperatures During Exercise in the Heat: Effects of Wind and Sweat.

This experiment investigates the validity of six thermometers with different measuring sensors, operation and site of application, to estimate core temperature (Tc) in comparison to an ingestible thermometric sensor based on quartz crystal technology. Measurements were obtained before, during and after exercise in the heat, controlling the presence of air-cooling and skin sweating. Twelve well-trained men swallowed the ingestible thermometer 6 h before the trial. After pre-exercise resting measurements at 20 °C, subjects entered a heat chamber held at 40 °C. Exercise in the heat consisted of 6

Flavonoid biosynthesis-related genes in grape skin are differentially regulated by temperature and light conditions.

Temperature and light are important environmental factors that affect flavonoid biosynthesis in grape berry skin. However, the interrelationships between temperature and light effects on flavonoid biosynthesis have not been fully elucidated at the molecular level. Here, we investigated the effects of temperature and light conditions on the biosynthesis of flavonoids (anthocyanins and flavonols) and the expression levels of related genes in an in vitro environmental experiment using detached grape berries. Sufficient anthocyanin accumulation in the grape skin was observed under a low temperatur

Changes with time in skin temperature of the shoulders in healthy controls and a patient with shoulder-hand syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal skin temperature in the shoulder is caused by various diseases. A thermography is unable to capture temperature changes over time. In contrast, a Thermocron is an effective measuring device to monitor temperature changes over time. PURPOSES: The purposes of this study employing a Thermocron were to measure shoulder skin temperature over time in healthy subjects and to detect shoulder skin temperature abnormalities in a patient with shoulder-hand syndrome. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Subjects comprised 10 healthy volunteers (20 shoulders; 4 men and 6 women, mean age 54 years). …

Impact of environmental temperature on skin thickness and microvascular blood flow in subjects with and without diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Glucose measurement from different skin areas might be influenced by changes in skin texture due to several environmental confounders. Our study was performed to investigate the effect of changes in ambient temperature on skin thickness and microvascular skin blood flow in subjects with and without diabetes at the lower forearm. METHODS: Thirteen subjects with diabetes and seven without diabetes participated in the study. The investigations were performed in a temperature- and humidity-controlled climatic chamber (EMPA, St. Gallen, Switzerland). Starting at 25 degrees C, the envir

Epidural catheter-induced paresthesia accompanied by changes in skin color and temperature in an obstetric patient.

Placement of epidural catheters for labor analgesia is a common procedure that has become more popular in recent years. However, this procedure can often cause paresthesia, which is typically characterized as a transient and intense burning pain radiating to the hip or leg. In this case report, we describe a patient who had persistent paresthesia in her right foot caused by an indwelling epidural catheter, which was successfully relieved following a partial withdrawal of the epidural catheter. More interestingly, we also observed dramatic changes in skin color and temperature (cold and pale) o
