Development and Validation of a Smartphone-based Contrast Sensitivity Test.

PURPOSE: Contrast sensitivity (CS) testing is an important measure of visual function reflecting variations in everyday visual experience in different conditions and helps to identify more subtle vision loss. However, it is only infrequently used. To make this more accessible, we have developed and validated a smartphone-based CS test. METHODS: A new tumbling-E smartphone-based CS test was developed, Peek Contrast Sensitivity (PeekCS). This was field tested and refined through several iterations. Reference standard was a tumbling-E Pelli-Robson CS test (PRCS). The validation study was conduct…

Development of a Smartphone App for Visualizing Heart Sounds and Murmurs.

BACKGROUND: Auscultation is one of the basic techniques for the diagnosis of heart disease. However, the interpretation of heart sounds and murmurs is a highly subjective and difficult skill. OBJECTIVES: To assist the auscultation skill at the bedside, a handy phonocardiogram was developed using a smartphone (Samsung Galaxy J, Android OS 4.4.2) and an external microphone attached to a stethoscope. METHODS AND RESULTS: The Android app used Java classes, "AudioRecord," "AudioTrack," and "View," that recorded sounds, replayed sounds, and plotted sound waves, respectively. Sound waves were visua…

Using the Accelerometers Integrated in Smartphones to Evaluate Essential Tremor.

Background/Aims: Evaluation of tremor constitutes a crucial step from the diagnosis to the initial treatment and follow-up of patients with … utinely used: they are expensive, time-consuming, not easily accessible. We aimed at showing that a smartphone application using the accelerometers embedded in smartphones is effective for quantifying the tremor of patients presenting with essential tremor. Methods: We developed a free iPhone/iPod application, Itremor, and evaluated different parameters on 8 …

A hierarchical framework to evaluate the usability of smartphone health applications.

In the current age of digitalization, smartphone health applications are rapidly increasing. It could be of great help for society to use health apps for regular monitoring of health instead of personally visiting medical consultants. Several health apps exist but their utilization is low mainly owing to usability problems. To enhance usage, it is essential to identify the key parameters that significantly affect the usability of health apps. This insight can help in developing an evaluation model for their usability. Although numerous usability models exist but these models often overlook cri…

A Preliminary Report: Screening Idiopathic Scoliosis (IS) With a Smartphone Application.

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) is a 3-dimensional spinal deformity that affects ∼3.1% of the population. Current strategies for IS screening and management remain limited resulting in delayed detection and inconsistent follow-up, which can result in missed opportunities for conservative treatment and an increased likelihood of requiring surgical intervention. Early and accessible screening tools may help address these gaps. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of a smartphone-based application that leverages 3D surface topography for IS screening, comparing its accuracy with r…

Machine learning on a smartphone-based CPT for ADHD prediction.

OBJECTIVES: Continuous Performance Tests (CPTs) are widely utilized as objective measures in the assessment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The integration of sensor data in smartphones has become increasingly common as a way of monitoring several behavioural indicators of mental health. Machine learning has started being utilized in the field of ADHD to improve diagnosis. This investigation explores (i) the feasibility of using smartphone devices to administer a CPT for ADHD assessment and (ii) whether data from built-in sensors in smartphone devices is useful for predicti…

A free customizable tool for easy integration of microfluidics and smartphones.

The integration of smartphones and microfluidics is nowadays the best possible route to achieve effective point-of-need testing (PONT), a concept increasingly demanded in the fields of human health, agriculture, food safety, and environmental monitoring. Nevertheless, efforts are still required to integrally seize all the advantages of smartphones, as well as to share the developments in easily adoptable formats. For this purpose, here we present the free platform appuente that was designed for the easy integration of microfluidic chips, smartphones, and the cloud. It includes a mobile app for…

Use of a Smartphone App for Cochlear Implant Patients With Tinnitus.

Purpose Smartphone apps for tinnitus relief are now emerging; however, research supporting their use and effectiveness is lacking. Research has shown that Tinnitus Therapy sounds intended for individuals with acoustic hearing provide relief to some patients using cochlear implants (CIs) with tinnitus. Here, we evaluated the use and acceptability of a smartphone app to help CI patients with tinnitus. Method Participants completed a laboratory trial (n = 19) and an at-home trial (n = 14) using the ReSound Tinnitus Relief app to evaluate its acceptability and effectiveness in reducing their tinni…

Smartphone videos to predict the severity of obstructive sleep apnoea.

OBJECTIVE: Diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is made on overnight polysomnography (PSG). Given the widespread availability of smartphone video technology, we aimed to develop and test a standardised scoring system for smartphone videos and compare these scores to PSG results. METHODS: Children aged 1-16 years undergoing PSG for suspected OSA were included. Parents were asked to take 1-2 min videos of the breathing they were concerned about. Videos were scored using a newly developed and tested tool on five components: inspiratory obstructive noises (1-4), presence of obstructive eve…

Viewing distance of smartphones in presbyopic and non-presbyopic age.

PURPOSE: The aim of this cross-sectional observational study was to measure habitual viewing distance with smartphones in individuals of different ages, and to identify factors influencing viewing distance. MATERIAL: Gender, reading position, forearm length, ametropia, correction modality, and near vision quality were investigated as factors affecting viewing distance. Participants were asked to read a typical text message on their own smartphone, while sitting and standing. A total of 233 subjects (129 females and 104 males), aged from 16 to 90 years old, were included and divided in two gro…

Addiction of smartphones and related finger deformities: A case report.

Widespread and excessive use of smartphones is very common, and its overuse is associated with several health-related conditions. A 58-year-old man presented with a spontaneous swan-neck deformity of the third digit. On his physical examination, full passive range of motion of the finger was achieved, while active range of motion was limited due to pain. Laboratory test results were normal. Ultrasonographic imaging demonstrated digital extensor tenosynovitis of the second, third, fourth, and fifth digits. Plain radiographs of bilateral hands were normal. Magnetic resonance imaging of the affec…

Usefulness of the Universal Adapter for Smartphones® in a Mannequin Study.

OBJECTIVE: Because of the shape of a double-lumen tube (DLT), it is more difficult to use for intubation than an ordinary endotracheal tube. We prospectively investigated the usefulness of the Airtraq DL® attached to the Universal Adapter for Smartphones® for DLT intubation. METHOD: At Tokai University Hachioji Hospital, anesthesiologists with ≥ 5 years' clinical experience intubated a tracheal intubation training mannequin with DLTs using the Airtraq DL® (Airtraq-alone phase) and the Airtraq DL® attached to the Universal Adapter for Smartphones® (adapter phase), and the time required was mea…

The Positive Predictive Value of Smartphone Photoscreening in Pediatric Practices.

PURPOSE: To compare smartphone photoscreening with other commercial objective screeners for amblyopia screening for young children. METHODS: Ten pediatricians in four practices employed Nokia 1020 smartphones (Espoo, Finland) with single-axis Gobiquity software (Scottsdale, AZ) during well-child visits. Outcomes of confirmatory pediatric ophthalmology examinations were prospectively compared using American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus uniform standards. RESULTS: Five percent of 6,310 in-office screenings were referred: 25% for high anisometropia, 31% for hyperopia, …
