Tick infestations and tick-borne diseases in Zimbabwe Rhodesia.

The distribution of tick species in Zimbabwe Rhodesia is significantly influenced by land utilization practices. The most commonly occurring species in the over-grazed tribal areas is Boophilus decoloratus. By contrast, well-managed commercial farms and ranches support a wide range of tick species, the most important of which is Rhipicephalus appendiculatus. Until recently tick-borne diseases of cattle were efficiently controlled through dipping. The low incidence of disease was an important factor contributing to over-grazing in tribal areas. Between 1973 and 1978 political unrest resulted in

Isolation of a Theileria species from Eland (Taurotragus oryx) infective for cattle.

Theileria infections were induced in cattle by feeding ticks on them from 3 sources: (a) adult rhipicephalid ticks obtained from the vegetation in a paddock containing an eland EAO at the Animal Orphanage, Nairobi National Park, Kenya, (b) Rhipicephalus appendiculatus adults fed as nymphs on the same eland, (c) R. pulchellus adults fed as nymphs on an eland W 68 captured in the Machakos district of Kenya. Both eland were harbouring Theileria parasites at the time nymphal ticks were fed. Mild infections were produced when adult ticks from these 3 batches were applied to cattle associated with l

Anti-Theileria equi activity of methanolic extract of Artemisia scoparia: In vitro efficacy, in vivo safety, and identification of lead molecules.

Equine piroplasmosis is a tick-borne disease that affects horses and is caused by Theileria equi and Babesia caballi. Currently, imidocarb dipropionate is the primary treatment for T. equi infections; however, its application is limited by its potential systemic toxicity. Artemisia annua is widely recognised for its antimalarial properties, whereas Artemisia scoparia has traditionally been used for various medicinal purposes. However, the therapeutic potential of A. scoparia against theileriosis in animals remains largely unknown. Activity-guided fractionation of a methanolic extract of A. sco

Evaluating the vector potential of deer keds Lipoptena fortisetosa for selected pathogens in Hokkaido sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis).

Deer keds (Lipoptena fortisetosa) are hematophagous insects that parasitize various ungulates, including Hokkaido sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis). Although deer keds are potential vectors for several pathogens, their role in disease transmission in Japan remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of L. fortisetosa as a vector for selected pathogens in sika deer. Blood samples were collected from 32 sika deer and 149 deer keds (64 from deer and 85 from the environment) from the Rusha area of the Shiretoko Peninsula, Hokkaido, Japan. Nested PCRs and sequencing were performed

Swift detection of Theileria annulata: A one-pot SHERLOCK Assay approach.

The protozoan pathogen, Theileria annulata, is transmitted by ticks which is very detrimental to various breeds of cattle, leading to the development of theileriosis. Early diagnosis and control of the disease is a crucial aspect of preventing and treating any infection. In order to detect T. annulata on-site, we selected sporozoite surface antigen gene (SPAG) as the target gene to design Recombinase Polymerase Amplification (RPA) primers and crRNA to build a one-pot SHERLOCK method. The results showed the assay could specifically detect T. annulata infection, but have no-cross reaction with t

Predicting future tropical theileriosis risk in China using tick distribution and climate models.

Tropical theileriosis, caused by Theileria annulata, is a tick-borne protozoan disease with high morbidity and mortality rates. While climate change and expanding livestock trade may increase transmission risks, the spatial distribution dynamics of tropical theileriosis in China under future climate scenarios remain poorly understood. This study aimed to predict the future distribution dynamics of tropical theileriosis in China by integrating climate variables and tick vector distribution data. We developed two MaxEnt-based prediction frameworks: one incorporating 19 climatic variables alone,

Epidemiology and genetic diversity of Theileria equi and Babesia caballi in Mongolian horses.

Equine piroplasmosis is a tick-borne disease caused by Theileria equi and Babesia caballi in horses. Because of its impact on horse industry, control of this disease is crucial for endemic countries. The control of equine piroplasmosis may be influenced by the genotypic diversity of T. equi and B. caballi. Mongolia, a country with a thriving livestock industry, is endemic for T. equi and B. caballi. However, nationwide epidemiological surveys have not been conducted to determine the current status of infections and genetic diversity of these two parasite species. Therefore, the objective of th

Diagnosis and prevalence of Theileria equi horses in western Mexico by nested PCR.

Theileria equi infection prevalence was calculated from 1000 blood samples obtained from apparently healthy horses in western Mexico. Samples were sent to the Animal Biotechnology Laboratory of the University of Guadalajara (Mexico) for T. equi diagnosis. Nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) was used as a diagnostic method to detect pathogen DNA. Using primers for the merozoite antigen-1 (EMA-1) gene, 19.70±2.47% of the horses (95% CI, 17.23-22.17%) tested positive for T. equi. There was no significant association between gender and T. equi infection. However, prevalence was higher among st

Estimation of the transmission dynamics of Theileria equi and Babesia caballi in horses.

For the evaluation of the epidemiology of Theileria equi and Babesia caballi in a herd of 510 horses in SW Mongolia, several mathematical models of the transmission dynamics were constructed. Because the field data contain information on the presence of the parasite (determined by PCR) and the presence of antibodies (determined by IFAT), the models cater for maternal protection with antibodies, susceptible animals, infected animals and animals which have eliminated the parasite and also allow for age-dependent infection in susceptible animals. Maximum likelihood estimation procedures were used

Stage-specific expression of immune-related redox metabolism genes in Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus following Theileria equi infection.

Equine piroplasmosis is a major disease affecting horses, and Theileria equi is one of its etiological agents. In Brazil, Rhipicephalus microplus is the only tick species with a confirmed vectorial capacity to transmit T. equi. However, the immunological mechanisms involved in this pathogen-vector interface are still unclear. The oxidative response is an important immunological tool for controlling infections. This study aimed to evaluate the differential expression of genes related to redox metabolism in R. microplus in response to T. equi infection in the larva and nymph stages and in the ti

Active surveillance for Theileria orientalis and the invasive Asian longhorned tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis) in three Missouri beef herds.

Theileria orientalis is a protozoan hemoparasite of cattle vectored by the rapidly emerging invasive Asian longhorned tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis). Theileria-associated bovine anemia (TABA) is easily mistaken for bovine anaplasmosis, which can lead to delayed diagnosis in areas where bovine anaplasmosis is endemic and TABA is newly emerging. Our objective was to surveil for infestation of cattle by H. longicornis and infection with T. orientalis on three Missouri cow-calf operations in counties where H. longicornis is known to be established. A total of 147 apparently healthy adult cows fr
