Human thermoregulatory control is often evaluated through the relationship between thermoeffector output and core or mean body temperature. In addition to providing a general indication of whether a variable of interest alters thermoregulatory control, this relationship is often used to determine how this alteration may occur. This latter interpretation relies upon two parameters of the thermoeffector output-body temperature relationship: the onset threshold and thermosensitivity. Traditionally, changes in the onset threshold and thermosensitivity are interpreted as "central" or "peripheral" m

Relevance of local skin wettedness (w (local)) to general thermal comfort while wearing clothing was investigated in eight males. In the experiments, skin wettedness of the whole body (w (body)) was controlled to be around the thermal comfort limit, while w (local) in different target locations of equal area (anterior and dorsal torso, arms, and thighs) was pushed beyond the comfort limit using special test garments. Subjects walked on a treadmill at 4.5 km h(-1) under 22 degrees C 50% RH. Arms and thighs were thermally in discomfort when their w (local) exceeded 0.32. On the other hand, disco

A retrospective assessment of labial sensory function following sagittal split osteotomy was undertaken by a combination of record analysis, postal questionnaire and objective sensory testing. Case records for 90 sides operated upon by a single consultant surgeon between 1979 and 1992 identified a prevalence of persisting sensory changed at 2 years of 6.7%. A higher incidence of sensory change was seen in patients treated with intermaxillary fixation/upper border wires than those managed with buccal monocortical miniplates. Postal questionnaire returns for 67 consultant operated sides identifi

The somatosensory functions of small-diameter nerve fibres were tested on the lower and upper extremities in nine patients with anorexia nervosa, ten patients with bulimia nervosa and ten control subjects, by analysing warmth, cold, and pain thresholds. To test large-diameter nerve fibres, the vibration threshold was also measured. Both patient groups had markedly elevated pain thresholds compared with the control subjects. In contrast, warmth and cold thresholds were only suggestively elevated while vibration thresholds were not at all increased in the patients. A distal-proximal pattern of s

Somatic sensory perception thresholds (warm, cold, hot pain, touch, pinprick, vibration, two-point discrimination), allodynia and skin temperature were assessed in the affected area of 42 patients with unilateral postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) and 20 patients who had had unilateral shingles not followed by PHN (NoPHN), and in the mirror-image area on the other side. There was no difference between the two groups for age or length of time after the acute herpes zoster infection. The PHN group showed significant changes in all sensory threshold measurements when the affected area was compared with

Two experiments were performed to examine the perceptual effects of methyl salicylate on hairy skin in humans. In the first experiment, the sensitivity to methyl salicylate (prepared in an ethanol and water vehicle and applied via filter paper) was measured in a paradigm that required subjects to report both the perceived intensity and the perceptual quality of the sensations they experienced. The results indicated that methyl salicylate could be reliably detected at concentrations between 3 and 12%. Peak perceived intensities increased with increasing concentration, and the dominant sensation

1. The responses of 90 cortical neurons in the somatosensory and gustatory areas were recorded with chronically implanted fine wires in freely moving Wistar rats. The responses were analyzed mainly while the animals were freely licking solutions and eating dry pellets. Cortical neurons were classified into several groups according to their response properties. 2. "Mechanosensitive" neurons (n = 20) showed rhythmic phasic activity in different phases of the licking cycle, depending on the location of their receptive field in the peripheral orofacial region. 3. "Movement-related" neurons (n = 27

This study aimed to compare blood prolactin concentrations and thermal perceptions between exertional heating (Exer-H) and exogenous heating (Exo-H) eliciting a closely matched elevation of rectal temperature (Trec) but different changes in skin temperature (Tsk) in young active males. Fourteen participants were randomly exposed to Exer-H (ergocycle at 60 % VO2max at 30 °C) and Exo-H (hot-water immersion up to the waist, 43-44 °C). The heating phase ended when Trec (Peak) reached 39 °C, or was <39 °C but reached the volunteers' limit point of tolerance. The post-heating phase (passive sitting)

The ability of hands and feet to convey skin thermal sensations is an important contributor to our experience of the surrounding world. Surprisingly, the detailed topographical distribution of warm and cold thermosensitivity across hands and feet has not been mapped, although sensitivity maps exist for touch and pain. Using a recently developed quantitative sensory test, we mapped warm and cold thermosensitivity of 103 skin sites over glabrous and hairy skin of hands and feet in male (M; 30.2 ± 5.8 yr) and female (F; 27.7 ± 5.1 yr) adults matched for body surface area (M: 1.77 ± 0.2 m2; F: 1.6

OBJECTIVE: Cigarette smoking is associated with a variety of oral diseases. A previous study showed a reduction of thermal sensitivity in the innervation area of the lingual nerve in smokers possibly caused by a degeneration of thermosensitive receptors as a consequence of smoking. The current study investigates somatosensory changes in ex-smokers.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sensory functions in innervation areas of lingual nerve were investigated in 40 ex-smokers by psychophysical means. Functions of lingual nerve in 40 ex-smokers were compared to those in 40 smokers and 40 non-smokers. Subjects

PURPOSE: Exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) has recently been shown to increase heat strain during exercise heat stress (HS), and represents a risk factor for exertional heat illness (EHI). We hypothesised that a repeated bout of EIMD blunts the increase in rectal temperature (T re) during subsequent endurance exercise in the heat.
METHODS: Sixteen non-heat-acclimated males were randomly allocated to EIMD (n = 9) or control (CON, n = 7). EIMD performed a downhill running treatment at -10 % gradient for 60 min at 65 % [Formula: see text]O2max in 20 °C, 40 % RH. CON participants performed th

Five protective garments (light summer clothing L, high visibility clothing HV, military clothing MIL, climber coverall CLM and firefighting clothing FIRE) were assessed on eight unacclimated male subjects at two environments: moderate warm environment with high humidity (MWH, 20.0°C, 86% relative humidity) and warm environment with moderate humidity (WMH, 30.0°C, 47% relative humidity). The thermophysiological responses and subjective sensations were reported. The PHS model (ISO7933) was used for predicting thermophysiological responses for each testing scenario. It was found that there were

Small fibre neuropathy is a neuropathy of the small non-myelinated C-fibres and myelinated Aδ-fibres. Clinically, an isolated small fibre neuropathy is distinguished by sensory and autonomic symptoms, with practically no abnormalities on neurological examination other than possible distorted pain and temperature sensation. Specific diagnostic tests for small fibre neuropathy are skin biopsy, including a count of the intra-epidermal small nerve fibres that cross the basal membrane, and quantitative sensory and autonomic testing. Diabetes mellitus is the most frequent underlying cause of small f

The aim of this study was to evaluate thermo-thresholds in autologous reconstructed microtic ears. Nineteen patients with unilateral microtia were investigated no less than two years after the last operation (3.6+/-1.7 years). Their normal corresponding ear acted as controls. Eight healthy children were also investigated to illustrate technical differences between measuring the two sides. Thermal sensitivity was tested quantitatively using a SENSELab MSA Thermotest. The skin temperature was also tested. Three different areas of the ear were examined: the lobe, the antihelix, and the helix. The

Exposure to a few moderately intense (1-mA) tailshocks has opposite effects on two measures of pain reactivity in rats. Tail-withdrawal to radiant heat is inhibited (antinociception) while vocalization thresholds are lowered (hyperalgesia) to both heat and shock (King et al., 1996). Prior work indicates that this hyperalgesia represents an unconditioned response and that it enhances the acquisition of both conditioned freezing and an avoidance response to thermal pain. The present experiments begin to explore the neural mechanisms that underlie hyperalgesia. Experiments 1 and 2 demonstrated th

Therapeutic section of the corpus callosum in adult epileptic patients typically results in their incapacity to carry out interhemispheric comparisons of lateralized information. The fact that acallosal and early split-brain subjects display few of these symptoms when tested in the tactile modality has led to the suggestion that these patients may use ipsilateral projections of the somatosensory system more effectively. Compensation, however, is limited by the fact that the lemniscal pathway is strongly lateralized, especially for the distal parts of the body, where few ipsilaterally projectin

Four experiments were conducted in rats within 2 hr of cesarean delivery to assess antinociception at birth and its possible opioid bases. Morphine antinociception was established in a dose-dependent fashion (0.0625-5.0 mg/kg bw). Analgesia was naloxone (1.0 mg/kg) reversible. In succeeding experiments, antinociception equivalent to that produced by 0.0625-0.125 mg/kg morphine injections was induced by a single 20-microliters bolus of milk (commercial half-and-half) that was delivered over 1-2 s to the middle of the tongue. This, too, was naloxone reversible. Milk-induced antinociception was m

The activity of antidromically identified sympathetic preganglionic neurons (SPNs) located in the lateral horn of the L2--L3 spinal cord segments was recorded in anesthetized and immobilized cats. The localization of SPNs with tonic activity and the conduction velocities of their axons were revealed. Two groups of SPNs were shown which increased their firing rates either in cooling or heating of the abdominal skin. Some intermediate neurons possibly conducting thermal information to SPNs, were studied. The data obtained are considered within the limits of segmentary model of the vasomotor ther
