Three-dimensional retraction of anterior teeth with orthodontic miniplates in patients with temporomandibular disorder.

Vertical dimension control is critical for adults with Class II high-angle malocclusions. If the patient has a temporomandibular disorder, this requirement is exacerbated. When extraction is planned, the treatment challenge is further increased. This article reports on a new biomechanical design (C-therapy) appropriate for anterior segment retraction with excellent control of the vertical dimension, even in a Class II high-angle patient with a temporomandibular disorder. Maximum retraction of the maxillary anterior segment can be achieved with a lingual retractor and a palatal miniplate withou…

INTRODUCTION: Chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia is characterised by limitation of ocular motility in all directions of gaze and p … 20 individuals and, the results were compared with a student's t test. RESULTS: The thickness (the vertical dimension of vertical recti and the horizontal dimension of horizontal recti) of all rectus muscles was significantly decreased in comparison with the control group, whereas the width (the horizontal dimension of vertical recti and the vertical dimension of h …

Interactive associations of sagittal and vertical craniofacial skeletal patterns with upper cervical spine morphology and posture in growing patients.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the independent and interactive associations of sagittal and vertical craniofacial skeletal dimensions with upper cervical spine posture and morphology in growing patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pretreatment lateral cephalograms of 726 children aged 7-14 years were retrospectively analyzed. Sagittal (ANB) and vertical (SN-MP) skeletal dimensions were treated as continuous variables. General linear models were constructed to evaluate their associations with cervical spine parameters while adjusting for sex and skeletal maturation. Significant ANB × SN-MP interaction

[Certain experiences in sequential treatment of occlusal reconstruction].

Occlusal reconstruction is a complex sequential treatment. The treatment may involve changes in occlusal vertical dimension and the full dental arch occlusal surface reconstruction. In this paper, we discussed the most concerned aspects of prosthodontists during the occlusal reconstruction sequential treatment, how to determine the suitable occlusal vertical dimension, rebuilding of occlusal plane, and consideratiom of temporomandibular joint disorders during reconstruction treatment. The prosthodontists should adopt the multidisciplinary collaboration mode of thinking in analysis, design, tre…

Frontal sinus: is it a predictor for vertical malocclusions?

The aim of the present study was to evaluate 3D frontal sinus morphology in consideration with different vertical facial developments. The study was conducted with the pre-treatment CBCT images of 87 patients, who were divided into 3 groups according to the sum of the posterior angle. The frontal sinus measurements were performed on the axial, sagittal, and coronal sections of the CBCT images. Craniofacial measurements were performed on the lateral cephalograms, obtained from the CBCT scans. Normal distribution of the data was confirmed by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. ANOVA, followed by post h

Sagittal Skeletal Malocclusions and Sleep Quality in Children Without Orofacial Dysfunction.

This study examined whether sagittal skeletal malocclusions influence sleep quality in children independently of orofacial functional disorders. A total of 164 children (7-13 y) without orofacial dysfunction were classified as class I, II, or III according to cephalometric analysis. Sleep quality was assessed with the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ). For each group, age, family income, SNB angle (mandibular position), SN-GoGn and FMA angles (vertical dimensions), and 2D airway measurements were compared. Correlations between CSHQ scores, SNB, and vertical dimensions were also eval…

[Study on the occlusal stability after three years of full-mouth occlusal reconstruction in maximum intercuspal position].

Objective: To observe the stability of vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) and mandibular position in full-mouth occlusal reconstruction subjects by means of digital occlusal analysis. Methods: Six subjects who had completed full-mouth occlusal reconstruction by intraoral functional generated path technique for more than three years in the Department of Prosthodontics, Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology were enrolled for follow-up observation, all six patients were male, with an age of (53.6±8.4) years. The digital dentition model and occlusal contact at baseline and three …

Dynamic smile evaluation in different skeletal patterns.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate dynamic smile in different skeletal patterns and to correlate vertical smile parameters with the underlying causative factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 150 participants ranging in age from 16-25 years were selected and divided into one of three groups-horizontal, average, and vertical skeletal pattern-using the following three cephalometric parameters: SN-MP, FMA, and Jarabak ratio. Videographic records of smile were obtained, and measurements were recorded and analyzed at rest, including upper lip length, and during smile, including maxillary incisal display,

[The causes of incisal overbite].

Why does the eruption of some incisors cease when overbite has reached 3 mm and continue in other cases? Eruption stops only when an opposing force confronts it; normally, this is what occurs when incisors erupt into end-to-end occlusion. Tongue thrusting between molar teeth plays an etiological role only when it interferes with vertical dimension. Incisal overbite diminishes when incisal inclination increases: orthodontists can eliminate incisal overbite by inclining the anterior teeth labially. But a low interincisive angle is no assurance against relapse, because retention, to be reliable, …

Adult orthodontic treatment: a challenging case report.

The case of a 61-year-old woman with a primary diagnosis of spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia and severe maxillary and mandibular spacing as well as anterior and posterior crossbites is presented. Clinical findings led to a diagnosis of macroglossia which required partial glossectomy in addition to comprehensive orthodontic treatment to correct malocclusion.

[Indication of maxillary reduction in surgical-orthodontic protocols].

The LEFORT I maxillary impaction correction of the dento-alveolar vertical compensation improve the labial contact and allow to establish a better occlusion. The site, the symmetry and the importance of this impaction depend of the initial exo and endobuccal diagnosis. Three cases are studied to appreciate its clinical possibilities.

The value of profileometry in complete immediate denture service. A preliminary report.

Twelve patients requiring total extractions and provision of immediate complete dentures were randomly selected for analysis. Pre-extraction records including full face and lateral profile photographs were taken under standard distance and lighting conditions. Maxillary and mandibular intraoral views were also exposed. Lateral cephalograms were taken pre-operatively, in both occlusal tooth contact position and the resting jaw relationship. Pre-extraction facial measurements were recorded and included occlusal face height and resting face height as well as the value, in degrees of the columella

INTRODUCTION: Previous authors have suggested that transverse facial skeletal growth is completed before either anteroposterior or vertical … the amount of growth completed for the various measurements in the transverse, anteroposterior, and vertical dimensions. Although some transverse measures (cranial width and interjugal width) attain adult size before any anteroposterior or vertical ones, there is evidence of continued growth for other transverse parameters (interzygomatic width and intergonial width …
