This special report was written for USAF vision specialists to use as a guide when prescribing spectacles for military aviators and to extend to the civilian sector the knowledge gained from the USAF experience. Visual correction in aviators presents some unique problems, especially for presbyopes. The demands of each individual aircraft environment need to be well understood. Ophthalmologists and optometrists must consider all pertinent aeromedical factors before prescribing spectacles for ametropic aviators.

We compared the visual performance of a soft diffractive (DIFF) bifocal contact lens, a near center (CN) concentric bifocal design, and monovision (MV), using a comprehensive vision testing protocol. Fifteen presbyopic subjects who were successfully wearing DIFF bifocal contact lenses participated in the study. We measured vision and task performance on 26 presbyopes, ages 46 to 65 years, fitted with diffractive bifocal contact lenses (BFCL) and monovision contact lenses (MVCL). Distance contact lenses combined with reading spectacles (DCL) served as the control condition. Twenty subjects completed the 6-week study. All subjects wore BFCL and MVCL daily for a period of 3 weeks each. The binocular depth of focus of monovision wearers was compared to the sum of the two monocularly determined depths of focus. Observers fell into three groups based upon ocular sighting dominance. Complete binocular summation of the monocular depths of focus was observed in subjects without a preferred fixating eye. BACKGROUND: Recent estimates of global prevalence of uncorrected presbyopia range from 510 to 826 million. There is a shortage of primary data regarding Near Visual Impairment (NVI) magnitude.
METHODS: Near visual acuity (NVA) and NVI data was collected from over 388,000 people aged 35 or over across 9 countries, within Community Eye Health programmes between January 2022 and June 2023. In Kenya (n = 34,328), dioptric power of required near correction was also recorded, and any association with age, gender or level of NVA was assessed via linear regression model.

PURPOSE: The role of inherent spherical aberration (SA) in the optical performance of presbyopic eyes corrected with simultaneous vision multifocal contact lenses was investigated.
METHODS: Presbyopic schematic eyes were modeled with partial accommodative function to represent 45- and 55-year olds and were further classified into five categories based on their magnitude of inherent SA. Two representative ametropic models of each category were corrected with four multifocal contact lens iterations. High-add designs were used to correct 55-year olds, whereas low-add designs served 45-year ones.
